A vocational work placement in a health care facility is a very important and valuable part of this diploma, putting everything you learn into practice in a real nursing environment. once you successfully complete this course you will be eligible to register with the Australian Health Practioner Regulation Agency (APHRA) as an Enrolled Nurse.

Southbank has links with the University of the Sunshine Coast, Griffith University, QUT and the University of Southern Queensland so you can gain credit and enter part-way through their nursing degree courses. This means you can benefit from direct entry into university and gain a dual qualification. your studies will combine practical skills and theoretical knowledge that will hold great appeal to potential employers. Another major advantage is that you could work as a professional Enrolled Nurse after just 18 months while studying for your degree or further qualifications.

FurTHEr STuDy OPTiONS: Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing) to the Bachelor of Nursing (ACU or UQ). Successful completion of the diploma may assist you to gain entry via the usual QTAC process into these university courses and once you are admitted to the degree will contribute towards study credits.

CarEEr OPPOrTuNiTiES: Anaesthetic technician; after further study at university ambulance paramedic and pre-hospital emergency care including aeromedical rescue and retrieval.

DESCriPTiON: This course is designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to assist the anaesthetist in all procedures of general or local anaesthetics and recovery.

Working in our simulated operating theatre you will carry out practical competencies of assisting the anaesthetist and caring for the patient. An intense workplace-based placement is a major element of the course and gives all students the opportunity to put learned skills to use in the workplace.

A wide range of skill units are covered including:

■ communicating with other medical professionals, technical and maintenance personnel

■ patient communication skills ■ anaesthetic preparation procedures ■ assisting anaesthetist during procedures ■ immediate post-operative recovery ■ aseptic techniques ■ control of microbial growth ■ sterilisation and decontamination procedures.

CarEEr OPPOrTuNiTiES: Positions within health care facilities, GP practices, dental practices which are directly involved in various aspects of cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation.

DESCriPTiON: The Certificate III in Sterilisation Services is a nationally recognised introductory certificate and provides skills for those wanting to start working for, or who are currently employed by, organisations providing a sterilisation service. you will learn broad skills to ensure compliance with Australian Standards requirements to provide safe, effective and efficient sterilising services.

This certificate covers a range of units, including:

■ skills to clean reusable medical equipment ■ disinfecting reusable medical devices ■ skills in the preparation of complex surgical instruments

for safe patient care ■ managing sterile stock and how to care for

surgical instruments ■ personal contribution to effective working relationships ■ operating and monitoring sterilisers.

Practical experience in a vocational placement is an important element of this qualification and is vital for successful completion (if you already work in a suitable position this can be used as your vocational placement).

Dental Technology, or equiva-lent, and have worked as a registered dental technician for a minimum of two years. Hepatitis B immunisations are mandatory. Applicants are re-quired to undergo a skills test prior to being accepted.

CarEEr OPPOrTuNiTiES: Dental Prosthetist.

DESCriPTiON: Successful completion of this qualification plus an IlETS level 7, enables you to register as a Dental Prosthetist with the Dental Technicians and Dental Prosthetists Board of Queensland and the Dental Board of Australia. It is part of the National Health Training Package and provides you with underpinning knowledge and practical skills needed to practice as a Dental Prosthetist. Study units cover many elements and include:

■ identifying, selecting and preparing required instruments, materials and equipment

■ conducting a dental prosthetic examination, including gathering client data and history, and developing a client treatment plan

■ taking client impressions and evaluating a removable dental prosthesis at try-in stage

■ inserting and issuing a completed removable dental prosthesis

All applicants will be required to successfully complete an assessment and manual dexterity skills test prior to enrolment.

In addition to the above crite-ria, students must be working a minimum of 16 hours a week in a dental laboratory. The course is delivered both online and in blocks on campus.

CarEEr OPPOrTuNiTiES: Dental Technician.

DESCriPTiON: you will learn all the skills needed to become a dental technician with this nationally recognised diploma. There’s theoretical knowledge to learn about dental materials and oral anatomy along with important practical classes held in our dental laboratory. Working in the lab will give you practical skills and experience in a number of fields including:

■ making models and custom impression trays ■ constructing oral splints ■ making false teeth (dentures) ■ constructing crowns and bridges (dental appliances) ■ repairing dental appliances.

To work in Queensland as a Dental Technician you must be registered with the Dental Technicians and Dental Prosthetists Board of Queensland. on successful completion of this diploma you can submit a registration request to the Dental Technicians Board of Queensland.

DESCriPTiON: Two Certificate Iv qualifications are offered: (1) oral Health Promotion - which is delivered 100% online enabling completion from a metro or regional area. It is designed for existing dental assistants that have completed their Certificate III in Dental Assisting and wish to develop further oral health knowledge and skills. (2) Extended Duties - is mostly online but students are required to attend a four-day on-campus practical for elective units.

Oral HEalTH PrOMOTiON

This course covers core skills required in the workplace including:

■ communicating with clients to support good health care practices

■ implementation and monitoring of infection control policies and procedures

■ contributing to occupational health and safety within your dental surgery

■ implementation of a range of oral health promotion programs.

RPl: Recognition of Prior learningThis course is offered only via Recognition of Prior learning (RPl). RPl is a process that allows the competencies you already possess to be recognised, regardless of how you obtained them. Gap training is offered either in the workplace or at SBIT. Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds who have learnt English since ar-riving in Australia must have completed a Certificate III (level 3) in Spoken and Written English (CSWE). Applicants will be required to provide a certified copy of this Certificate with their application. Physical fitness is required. Certificate III in Aged Care is desirable.

CarEEr OPPOrTuNiTiES: Residential, aged or community care assistant/supervisor, assistant to a diversional therapist or coordinator of leisure and health programs in an aged care facility.

DESCriPTiON: Make a difference in the daily lives of the older members of our community by increasing the knowledge and skills required to provide quality aged care service. Explore the attitudes and values that will help you to extend the range of duties required for employment in the community and/or residential care with an emphasis on aged care. This course can develop your career, while you help others who appreciate your support.

DESCriPTiON: The Certificate Iv in Home and Community Care will build on your knowledge and skills needed to provide quality aged care service. Understand and explore the attitudes and values that will help you extend the range of duties required for employment in the community and/or residential care systems - with an emphasis on aged care.

CarEEr OPPOrTuNiTiES: Aged care assistant / worker.

DESCriPTiON: Working with older adults within society can be a fulfilling and rewarding career. The Certificate III in Aged Care is a nationally recognised qualification giving you all the entry-level skills and knowledge you need to become an aged care worker. With Australia’s aging population there is a high demand for qualified aged care workers.

our accelerated course is offered via flexible delivery and can fast-track you through this qualification if you’ve been working in an aged care environment for at least 3-6 months.

This certificate covers a range of core skills so you can offer care and support at the appropriate level to older people. Some of the key areas you will gain skills and knowledge in are:
