The pulmonary circuit• The pulmonary circuit carries

blood to the lungs to be oxygenated and then back to the heart. In the lungs, carbon dioxide is removed from the blood, and oxygen taken up by the haemoglobin in the red blood cells.

Systematic circuit

• The systemic circuit carries blood around the body to deliver the oxygen and returns de-oxygenated blood to the heart. Blood also carries nutrients and waste.

• The heart is seen from the front in the diagram. So the right side of the heart is shown on the left of the diagram. The left side is on the right side of the diagram.

ed blood cells are the most plentiful. In

fact, a healthy adult has about 35 trillion of

them. The body creates these cells at a rate

of about 2.4 million a second, and they each

have a life span of about 120 days.

WHITE BLOOD CELL

hen the body is fighting off infection, it makes

them in ever-increasing numbers. Still,

compared to the number of red blood cells in

the body, the number of white blood cells is

low. Most healthy adults have about 700 times

as many red blood cells as white ones

ArteriesArteriesHeart pumps blood out through one main artery called the dorsal aorta. It divides and branches out into many small arteries. It carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body.

CapillariesCapillaries

Capillary release their oxygen which passes through the wall and into the surrounding tissue. The tissue releases its waste products, like carbon dioxide, which passes through the wall and into the red blood cells.

VeinsVeins

Veins have three layers: an outer layer of tissue, muscle in the middle, and a smooth inner layer of epithelial cells.

Veins transport waste-rich blood back to the lungs and heart. It is important that the waste-rich blood keeps moving in the proper direction and not be allowed to flow backward.
