What is matter? Matter is anything that has mass (volume) and takes up space.

All matter takes up space.

Page 5: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

How can matter be described?

1. Matter can be described as an object’s volume, mass, and weight.

2. Matter has 4 states.

Page 6: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

What are the 4 states of matter?

The 4 states of matter are:

1. solids 2. Liquids3. Gases4. plasma

Page 7: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

What makes up matter?

Matter is made up of particles: atoms and molecules.

Particles are always moving

Page 8: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

How do particles move?

Particles move in a random motion.

Particles can move in any direction and at different speeds.

NOTES: MATTER AND VOLUME

Page 10: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

L.O. I will be able to measure the volume of regularly shaped objects.

Page 11: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

What is volume? 1. Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.

2. Things that have volume cannot take up the same space at the same time.

Page 12: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

How do we measure liquid volume?

Measure liquid volume in liters (L).

The liter is the SI unit for volume

Page 13: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

How do you measure a liquid correctly?

Measure the volume of a liquid at the meniscus.

Page 14: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

What is a meniscus?

The surface of any liquid is curved.

The meniscus is the curve at the surface of a liquid.

Page 16: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

How is volume measured using the meniscus?

Measure volume at the lowest point of meniscus at eye level.

How do you measure the volume of a solid object?

Measure volume of a solid object use cubic units.

Cubic = 3 dimensional or 3D

How do you measure the volume of a cube?

Volume of a rectangular solid (formula)

V = volumel = lengthw = widthh = height

V = (L)(w)(h)

How do you find the volume of an irregular solid?

To find the volume of an irregular solid measure the amount of water it displaces.

Formula:V2 – v1 = Volume of

irregular solid object

Page 23: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

V2=5.5l V1=4.75 5.5-4.75=1.25 volume of dinosaur

NOTES: MATTER AND MASS

Page 27: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

L.O. To identify the difference between mass and weight

Page 28: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

What is mass? Mass is the measure of the amount of matter in an object.

Mass = amount of matter in an object.

Page 29: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

What are the characteristics of mass?

Characteristics of mass:

1. Mass of an object is constant no matter the location. Mass = size

2. Mass changes only when the amount of matter changes.

3. Mass is expressed in grams (g), kilograms (kg) and milligrams (mg)

4. Mass is measured using a balance scale.

Page 30: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.
Page 31: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

What is weight? Weight is the measure of the gravitational force on an object.

Weight = force

Page 32: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.
Page 33: Science ch. 3. LOLAfter taking notes, I will be able to identify and analyze the essential properties of matter.

What are the characteristics of weight?

Characteristics of weight:

1.Weight is measured by using a spring scale

2. Weight is expressed in newtons (N).

3. Weight is not constant but varies depending on where the object is in relation to Earth.
