    Introduction

} Sipping alcoholic drinks is never a good

idea, but everyone has a choice to stayaway from hard drinks, for good.Unfortunately, there is no escape fromanother concoction-the chemicalcocktail.

    Introduction(continuation)}Chemical cocktails refers to the

combination of man-made and naturalchemical substances that exist around us,

from the air we breathe to the commonthings we use, and even the foods weeat. Not all chemicals to which we areexposed to are harmful, but some ofthem mix together, they can became

    dangerous to our health.

Chemical Cocktail}Chemical cocktails' refer to the combined

effects of chemicals that appear safe in

isolation but when absorbed togethermay carry health risks, such as decliningsperm counts, increased rates of cancerin adults and autism in children. Peopleand animals in their infancy are said to be

particularly vulnerable to the combinedeffects of chemicals.

    Chemical Cocktail(continuation)

}Created by combination of differentman-made or naturally produced

    chemical substances.

Fact Bytes}Chemical cocktails refers to the

    combination of chemical compounds

    that exists in the environment.

} There are certain chemical compoundthat are not toxic, but when they were

combined together in the environmentand when absorbed by the human, theycan endanger health.

    Fact Bytes(continuation)

} The European Union and the United Statesgovernment, sets guidelines in dealing

with chemicals and chemical cocktails toensure the safety of every living things.

1.0 Chemicals are Everywhere} The enclosed environment can be worse

in pollution than outdoor, and even thecleanest homes is not spared from

    potentially dangerous substances.

} Plastic Objects, if you own a lot of this, itcan be a source of chemical

    cocktails.(examples:Vinyl,Adhesives,plastic containers,etc.)

    1.1continuation

} In Makeups, dry-cleaned clothes, medicines, and foods contribute tochemical cocktails which are being

    absorbed by the body.

} Even animals and those at the wild arenot spared of this chemical cocktails they

could have their share from air, water and

soil. They where just like us they are alsobeing affected.

} The womb is not safe according to one studyin the United States, because a newbornbaby can already have 200 industrialchemicals in the body.

} At the University of Lancaster in UnitedKingdom,13 volunteers reported themselvesfor a chemical test, in which an average of30 chemicals was found in their bodies. Thechemicals identified were mainlycomponents of DDT(dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane).

    **DDT(dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane)

} a synthetic chemical compound once usedwidely in the US and throughout the world as

a pesticide (a chemical substance used to killweeds, insects, rodents, or other pests).

} It is probably best known for its dual nature:although remarkably effective in destroyingcertain living things that are harmful to plantsand animals, it can also be extremely

dangerous to humans and the environment.} A pesticide long banned in most countries

    including UK.

    What are the

    Dangers/Possible

    effects to human

    and animals?

    In the University ofGothenburg(Sweden) and

University of London(UK),studiedthe its effects on human andanimals. Their findings centeredphthalates, such asPVC(polyvinyl chloride),flameretardants, dioxins, bisphenol-A,& PCBs (polychlorinatedbiphenyls) impact the body. These have known to havetoxins, but are still found in themany of the things we use.

    Effects of Chemical Cocktails on

    Humans

  • 8/3/2019 Science Chemical Cocktails

    16/23

    Possible Effects/Danger on Human:

}One of their ways on affecting living things is byattacking the endocrine sys. The endocrinedisrupters ,they act as hormones that disrupt the

normal function of the endocrine system[controls

    growth, tissue function, metabolism, reproduction&mood].

}When endocrine started to be affected by the

toxins, a host of abnormalities can come about. Inhumans they can cause cancer (breast, ovarian, testes and prostate), autism, reproductiveabnormalities.(low sperm count, change shape ofgenitals and delayed sexual development)

    17/23

    Possible Effects/Danger on

    Animals:

} In animals, endocrine disrupters canaffect reproduction, growth and

immunity. Some chemicals such asherbicide Atrazine, it has the ability toalter animals gender.

What is being done to manage

    chemical cocktails?

} There are regulations on chemicals andits production, each undergoes

evaluation so the consumers know thesafety and risks of it.

} For now the European Union and the USgovt are increasing their efforts to arrive

at guidelines and systematic approachdealing with chemical cocktails.

  • 8/3/2019 Science Chemical Cocktails

    19/23

} EU legislation on chemicals called

REACH(Registration ,Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals )it orders all

chemical manufacturers to track chemicalmixtures to ensure products are safe.

} The UK govt, UK Chemical Industry

Association and other international agenciesare working to speed up results.

} In US, the Environmental Protection

Agency(EPA),they were conducting usingchemical screening using ToxCast screening

program, a faster way to determine on howchemicals would affect human body.

What can I do to prevent increase of

    chemicals to the environment?

} I maybe Young, but as far as Im concernedmy age doesnt matter at all. I can preventthe increase of chemicals to our environmentin doing simple or such ways in starting it withinmyself: by using natural products instead ofusing products that has chemical componentor synthetic products. And by joining in someorganizations in which they care for our

environment. And also being an advocate ofnature through imposing rules inside our homeby just using natural products.Simple ways butI know can help a bit.

    AdditionalInformation:

    EPA(EnvironmentalProtection Agency)

    } They introduced

guidelines to helpchemical groupsand environmentalorganizationsidentify safer

    alternatives tochemicals thatendanger health.

    What are POPs?(PersistentOrganic Pollutants)

    } Chemical compound

that remains in theenvironment for solong bec. They dontbreak down easily bychemical orbiological means.

And when absorbed, they build up inhuman and animaltissue.

    Gender-bending Chemicals

    Found in Everyday Products.Phthalathes

} Additives that makeplastics and other

products soft andflexible. Ex. DBP(nailpolish, ink, paint)DINP&DIDP(paint, sealants, ink)DHP(laq

    uer,sealants,ceramics)BBP(floorings,ink,adhesives)

    Bisphenol-A(BPA)

    } Chemical applied inPolycarbonate

plastics(PP) and epoxyresin. PP found inCDs/DVDs reusablecontainers & babybottles. Epoxy resin

used inpaints, adhesives andlinings in metal cans.

    Pesticides including pyrethroids,linuron,vinclozolin and fenittrothion.
