NEW COURSE: Biotech Engineering(Application Level Engineering Course)

Future Sophomores

• Four Choices:– Biology– Honors Biology I– Chemistry I (if biology already completed)– Honors Chemistry I (if biology already completed)

• Ask Yourself These Questions?– Do you want to be on a honors track?– Do you enjoy science?– Or do you struggle with doing homework and/or science in general?

Biology• College prep course• Major Topics Include:– Ecology– Biochemistry– Cell Biology– Genetics– Evolution– Kingdoms of Life

• Emphasis on lab experience/cooperative learning• Content knowledge based exams/quizzes• Prerequisites:– Physical Science teacher recommendation

Honors Biology I• College prep course• Topics covered same as Regular Bio, but:– Greater depth– Rigorous expectations– Heavier workload

• Emphasis on higher level critical thinking and analytic skills

• Required if plan to take Honors Biology II for college credit or to take the AP Bio Exam

• Two full-length books will be read during this course; including one on the subject of evolution

• Prerequisite: Physical science recommendation

Chemistry I(Bio/Honors Bio I Current Freshman Only)

• College preparatory course• Major Topics Include:

– Metric System/Sig Figs– Composition of Matter– Elements– Atomic Structure– Periodic Table– Chemical Bonding/Reactions– Moles– Gas Laws

• Emphasis on laboratory technique & computer skills• Prerequisites: Biology, Algebra I, enrolled in higher math &

biology teacher recommendation

Honors Chemistry I(Bio/Honors Bio I Current Freshman Only)

• College preparatory course• Covers same material as Regular Chemistry, but:– More rigorous schedule/assignments– Designed for students with aptitude in math/science– Required for those who want to take Honors Chemistry II

for college credit– Includes additional topics: gas stoichiometry,

thermochemistry, acid/base chemistry, chemical kinetics, redox reactions, electrochemistry, and nuclear chemistry

• Prerequisites: Biology/Honors Bio I, Algebra I, enrolled in higher math and biology teacher recommendation

Future Juniors

• Seven Choices:– Chemistry I– Honors Chemistry I– Honors Biology II

• ONLY if taken concurrently w/Chemistry

– Physics– Ecology– Forensic Science

• Law Enforcement Career Pathway

– Anatomy & Physiology• ONLY if taken concurrently w/Chemistry

– Biotech Engineering• Can enroll in this course 2015 & 2016 without taking other engineering courses, but then have to be a part of engineering CTE strand

• Ask Yourself These Questions?– Do you want to stay on a honors track?– Do you enjoy science?– Do you plan to go to college?– Or do you struggle with doing homework and/or science in general/just trying to graduate?

Chemistry I

• College preparatory course• Major Topics Include:

– Metric System/Sig Figs– Composition of Matter– Elements– Atomic Structure– Periodic Table– Chemical Bonding/Reactions– Moles– Gas Laws

• Emphasis on laboratory technique & computer skills• Prerequisites: Biology, Algebra I, enrolled in higher math &

biology teacher recommendation

Honors Chemistry I

• College preparatory course• Covers same material as Regular Chemistry, but:– More rigorous schedule/assignments– Designed for students with aptitude in math/science– Required for those who want to take Honors Chemistry II

for college credit– Includes additional topics: gas stoichiometry,

thermochemistry, acid/base chemistry, chemical kinetics, redox reactions, electrochemistry, and nuclear chemistry

• Prerequisites: Biology/Honors Bio I, Algebra I, enrolled in higher math and biology teacher recommendation

Honors Biology II• College preparatory course in which you can obtain Newman college

credit if you maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA• Alternative to college credit is to take AP Biology Course Exam• Equivalent to Pre-Med General Biology Course in college• Major Topics include:

– Unifying Themes of Biology• Cell Biology• Genetics• Evolution• Ecology

– Scientific Inquiry• Application and critical thinking skills are required as a large majority of

this course is laboratory based• Animal dissection IS required• SUMMER COURSEWORK is required• Prerequisites: Honors Biology I, concurrent or past enrollment in Chemistry I, and science teacher recommendation

Physics

• College preparatory course• Major Topics include:

– Matter & Energy– Measurements– Motion/Momentum– Newton’s Law– Vector Quantities/Addition– Forces/Gravitational Law

• Emphasis on laboratory technique & computer/graphing skills with probe ware

• This course is mathematical in nature• Prerequisites: Algebra II and Geometry

(previously/concurrently enrolled) and Biology teacher recommendation

Ecology

• Ecology DOES count does KS Board of Regents science requirements

• Major Topics include:– Ecological Principals– Sustainability– Human Impact on Biosphere– Biomes– Recycling/Stewardship of Earth

• Emphasis on Cooperative Work and Research• Students are also responsible for the care & maintenance of

the OWLS outdoor wildlife area• Participation in the district-wide recycling program is required• Prerequisites: Biology and science teacher recommendation

Forensics Science• This course is designed for students on the Law Enforcement Career

Pathway track; however, it is open to all students• Major Topics include:

– Forensic Science Careers– Crime Scene Analysis– Serology (blood analysis)– Fingerprinting– Trace Evidence– Firearms and Bullet Trajectory– Skeletal Remain Analysis– DNA Fingerprinting– Entomology

• Emphasis on “hands-on” learning, critical thinking, and problem solving• Prerequisites: Biology and Biology teacher recommendation

Anatomy & Physiology(ONLY IF taken concurrently w/Chemistry)

• College preparatory course or Newman college credit with cumulative 3.0 GPA

• Course is designed for students who have a strong desire to go into some medical or related field as doctors, nurses, technicians, and/or therapists

• Anyone who has interest in physical education and/or coaching are also encouraged to take this course

• Major Topics include:– Biological Review– Tissues/Skin– Bone/Muscle– Major Organ Systems

• Cat dissection IS REQUIRED & CADAVER LAB VISIT• This is an Honors level course and DOES REQUIRE SUMMER HOMEWORK• Prerequisites: Biology & previous/concurrent enrollment in Chemistry

and science teacher recommendation

Biotech Engineering• The growing market for jobs in biological

engineering is playing a central role in energy and agricultural sustainability solutions. The BioE course develops students’ thinking skills and prepares them for emerging careers through topics such as genetic engineering, biofuels, medical engineering, and biomanufacturing.

• This course is an Application Engineering Course on the CTE Engineering Pathway.

• For 2015-2016 & 2016-2017, this course is open to any upper classmen interested in this field that qualify. After that, you must have taken pre-requisite Engineering and Biology courses.

• Teacher approval required.

Future Seniors• Seven Choices:

• Can enroll in this course 2015 & 2016 without taking other engineering courses, but then have to be a part of engineering CTE strand

• Ask Yourself These Questions?– How do you want to spend your last year of high school?

• Improving your future resumes?• Keeping science fresh in your mind for college?• Or taking easier courses to maintain your GPA?

– Do you want to stay on a honors track?– Do you enjoy science?– What are you going to major in at college?– Or do you struggle with doing homework and/or science in general/just trying to graduate?
