EMBL Australia style/logo guide Prepared by Niall Byrne and Toni Stevens Updated 21 March 2014 – changed Australian government names The Executive Committee of the EMBL Australia approved the following guidelines for use for all EMBL Australia Communications programs and documents at its February 2013 meeting. It’s a work in progress and the master is maintained by Science in Public. EMBL Australia and its associated entities are complex and potentially confusing. This working document provides guidance on the preferred forms of wording and the preferred use of logos. Our challenge starts with EMBL. If you know what EMBL is, then EMBL Australia is easy to explain. But, outside of the life science community, EMBL is not well known. That’s where things start to get hard. Hopefully this will help. In each case we’ve attempted to have a plain English name as well as, when necessary, an abbreviated version that only makes sense to people in the know. A lot of effort goes into logos for organisations and we recognise that every organisation has its own rules. So interpret the following sensibly. It’s intended as a guide. Use your common sense to find the right solution for your document. The logos in this document should be sufficient quality to cut and paste if required. Updated 21 March 2014 – changed Australian government namesThe Executive Committee of the EMBL Australia approved the following guidelines for use for all EMBL Australia Communications programs and documents at its February 2013 meeting.

High resolution versions are available here: www.scienceinpublic.com.au/embl/style-guide

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is Europe’s flagship for the life sciences. Twenty European states are members. Australia is the first and only associate member.

This is the EMBL logo. It should not be used on EMBL Australia documents. If you think you should be using this logo then check with Silvio.

EMBL Australia

Australia’s associate membership of EMBLThe Australian Government is an associate member of EMBL.

The membership is currently being renegotiated and is due for renewal in February 2015.

Membership is managed by the Australian Government’s Department of Education (with some components also managed by the Department of Industry).

The base logo is:

The Department’s logo takes various forms e.g.

The Australian Government is also a substantial direct and indirect funder of the EMBL Australia family and should be acknowledged when practical – see below.

EMBL AustraliaEMBL Australia was created to maximise the benefits of Australia’s associate membership of EMBL, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory.

EMBL Australia is developing up to 20 research teams and bases of expertise in new tools including bioinformatics and systems biology.

The full name EMBL Australia should be used on all external documents. Never call it EMBL.

Various short descriptions of EMBL Australia are in another document: “What is EMBL Australia”. This is online at: www.scienceinpublic.com.au/embl/style-guide

This is the EMBL Australia logo.

EMBL Australia is an unincorporated joint venture between eight universities (the Group of Eight) and CSIRO. Their logos should be included where possible on major publications: websites, annual reports etc. Generally Monash leads this list because of its leadership role in creating EMBL Australia.

EMBL Australia

EMBL Australia is financially supported by the Australian Government and their logo (or one of the Department logos) should be included where possible on websites, annual reports etc.

NodesThe Victorian node at Monash UniversityThe Victorian node at Monash University hosts SBI Australia and two research groups within ARMI, the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute.

Or in short, the Victorian node is hosted by ARMI at Monash University.

The ARMI logo should be used with the Monash logo where possible and referred to as ARMI at Monash.

The South Australia node at SAHMRIThe South Australia node is hosted by SAHMRI with the support of the University of Adelaide, the University of South Australia and Flinders University.

Or in short, EMBL Australia’s South Australian node is hosted by SAHMRI.

There are currently two research groups in Adelaide.

The correct logos for South Australia are:

EMBL Australia

The Queensland node at the University of QueenslandBioinformatics Resource Australia of EMBL Australia is hosted by the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) at the University of Queensland and was established with the support of the Australian Government’s research infrastructure investments.

It’s also known as The Bioinformatics Resource or BRAEMBL.

We recommend that the abbreviation BRAEMBL only be used internally.

Externally this is the EMBL Australia Bioinformatics Resource – which is what the logo says.

The short version: EMBL Australia’s Queensland node hosts our Bioinformatics Resource.

Other EMBL Australia initiativesThe Bioinformatics Resource, SBI Australia and the Australian Bioinformatics Network are initiatives of EMBL Australia.

The Bioinformatics ResourceThis initiative is covered above as a part of the QLD node.

The Australian Bioinformatics NetworkThe Australian Bioinformatics Network is a joint initiative of EMBL Australia, CSIRO and Bioplatforms Australia to increase the benefits Australian bioinformatics can deliver by connecting people, resources and opportunities.

Avoid the abbreviation ABN. There are many different ABNs in Australia.

There are both black and white versions of the Bioinformatics Network logos, designed for different background colours. The text versions have been designed to be used on documents when the audience might not be aware of the Network already, e.g. sponsor advertising.

EMBL Australia

A logo block for the partners has been optional – to reinforce that the Network is about the wider community.

On official documents we should include the partner logos. But when others are referencing the Network they only need use the Bioinformatics Network logo.

The partner logos are:

Systems Biology Institute Australia SBI Australia is the Australian node of Japan’s Systems Biology Institute and is the first international node of that Institute.

This is the SBI Australia logo:

SBI Australia is an initiative of EMBL Australia and can be used with the EMBL Australia logo.

EMBL Australia Student ProgramsEMBL Australia’s student programs give young researchers the tools and connections they need, not only to survive, but to prosper in science careers and continue to contribute their skills and knowledge to our workforce.

The program comprises of three main components:

Travel Grants

The EMBL Australia PhD Travel Grants provide up to $3,500 for short trips of less than six weeks, or up to $7,500 for a longer visit of up to 6 months.

The EMBL PhD Symposium Grants offer travel to Europe to attend the annual EMBL PhD Symposium – a conference designed for PhD students, organised by PhD students.

International PhD Program

EMBL Australia

The EMBL Australia’s International PhD Program enables students to undertake their PhD at an EMBL facility in Europe. The PhD is jointly awarded and co-supervised by EMBL and the student’s Australian university, and students are provided with a stipend and travel support.

Domestic Training Program

The EMBL Australia PhD Course is an annual two-week intensive for 60 first year PhD students modelled on EMBL’s compulsory pre-doctoral course. The Course shows students how their research fits into the bigger picture of science, and introduces a range of fields including: bioinformatics; developmental biology; genomics; systems biology; and regenerative medicine.

The EMBL Australia PhD Symposium is the local version of the EMBL PhD Symposium. It’s a conference designed for PhD students, organised by PhD students and run by Australian PhD candidates.

International Conference on Systems Biology 2014The International Conference on Systems Biology 2014 is being held in Melbourne for 14 to 18 September 2014.

Branding materials are available at: www.icsb14.com/pages/promote-icsb-2014.php

Initially promotion will be EMBL Australia or SBI Australia branded and promoted though these networks.

During this time conference specific branding will be developed and phased in as the conference approaches.

Supporters of the conference should be acknowledged where possible and logos used where appropriate. These supporters are:

EMBL Australia CSIRO Bioplatforms Australia Melbourne Convention Bureau Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre Victorian State Government.

AlliancesEMBL Australia works with a range of Australian and international research organisations to achieve its mission, and has memoranda of understanding with the following:

Australian Genome Research Institute (AGRF) Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Research Institute (AMMRF) Australian Nuclear and Scientific Organisation (ANSTO) Australian Phenomics Facility BioGrid Australian Limited Bioplatforms Australia.

TrainingEMBL Australia runs and supports a range of training initiatives.

EMBL Australia works with a range of partners, collaborating to deliver programs, proving sponsorship for student programs and seeking sponsors for our own programs.

Partners should therefore be acknowledged when promoting training programs and opportunities, with logos when and as appropriate.
