irrigation regimes

Project goal Understanding the influence of soil water content and soil temperature on crop
behaviour is pivotal in the agricultural field. The aim of this research project is to
verify the crop growth and the pest infestation, when the soil is kept automatically
within a consistent moisture range respectively moisture bandwidth.
PlantCare solution Two smart irrigation controllers PlantControl CX and 70 pcs. PlantCare wireless
sensors. The PlantControl CX allows to preset - for up to 32 different irrigation
zones - a moisture threshold for irrigation start and a second threshold defining
the targeted moisture level after irrigation end. The system automatically adjusts
the water input, so that the moisture range is always kept within the same
bandwidth without any human interference.

Project Research project to improve the drought tolerance of starch potatoes.
Client Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology

Project goal The economic production of starch potatoes requires stably high yields and starch
contents. However, starch yield depends substantially on weather conditions and
is jeopardized by early summer drought, which according to current climate
change scenarios will become more frequent in Central Europe. Irrigation is
ecologically and economically limited. Thus, future starch potato varieties need to
be more drought-tolerant. The direct assessment of drought tolerance in breeding
lines is laborious. Thus, molecular marker that predict drought tolerance will be
developed in this project. These markers will accelerate breeding of drought
tolerant starch potato varieties with high yield stability. To ensure that markers
developed in exact experiments can be used under field conditions, markers will
be validated on field samples. All markers and the test methods will be made
available in a reference database to academia and breeders.

As Syngenta was already convinced by PlantCare's sensor technology
performance, the main requirements for the Mini-Logger were: easy to use and
simple readout of data to a USB stick directly in the field, without the need of any
computer or handheld device.
