Attention Getters Attention GettersGoogle Sky
Use a computer or smart board to show students the images of space using Google Sky. It is agreat way to give students a better visual of what space looks like and get them involved insearching for different things they would like to see in space (ex. Plants, sun, moon, etc.)

Star Viewing Ball
Create a large star viewing ball by using a large beach ball and paper mache it (leaving a holelarge enough for a student to put their heads in) and painting it black. The inside should haveglow in the dark stars randomly inside it. This ball is then hung from the ceiling using strings (withthe hole on the bottom) and the students will be able to look inside. Explain to the students thattheir head is the Earth and to obser ve how there are stars all around them. This will help themgrasp the concept of how the planets are in space.

Phases of the Moon Song/VideoThis is a cute video and song that would be a great for opening the lesson about moon
phases. It goes through and shows each moon phase and its position relative to the earthand sun. The song talks about each phase and it does it in a way that is easily remembered. It is a great video to entertain students and help them remember the phasesof the moon.

Revolution vs. RotationRevolution vs. RotationPurpose: Uses role playing to demonstrate the universe and its connection to the sun.
Activities and Procedures:
--blow up a yellow punch ball to its fullest representing the sun and balloons of nine different colors to sizes representing the nineplanets.
--take the class outside or go into the gym inside. Have nine paths marked on ground or floor with string, tape, or chalk.
--the "sun" stands in the middle of a circle. The other children take their places on the marked paths
--begin the experiment by having children walk in their path or "orbit" around the sun. Stress that the planets never leave their
own orbits. This travel around the sun is called "revolution".
--after the children have orbited the sun once, bring in the added concept of "rotation³ While moving around the sun, the children
should also start to spin around. This demonstrates "rotation".
-- tell children that it takes one year for the earth to revolve around the sun, and it takes one day for the earth to rotate on its own
axis.
--give all children in the class a chance to try the experiment.
Materials:
--one yellow punch ball
--nine balloons of different colors
--chalk or string to mark orbits
--resource material to check orbits of the nine planets

16 black 35mm film canisters

Patterns
--Label each tube and cut patterns out
--Put the pattern on the canister with the correct name on it.
--Put a pattern over the bottom of the film canister. Line the dark circle upwith the inside rim of
the canister. Tape the circle into place.
-- Punch a small hole through the paper and the canister for each star inthe pattern.
--Look through it to make sure that you have punched the holes all theway through.
--Take the paper pattern off the canister.
-- Repeat for the rest of the constellation patterns.

After discussing various constellations and the myths behind them as a class, askstudents to think about what they would do if they could create a newconstellation. Tell them to think about the name, story, and what it would look like.
Students will go through the steps of the writing process to create their constellation:
Prewriting²brainstorm about name and storyDrafting²write first sloppy copy of story
Revising²with a partner
Editing²with teacher
Evaluating²make final changes and decisions
Publishing²stories should be typed with illustrations and will be published in a
