New arrivals in Mrs Reynold’s Classroom: Three

Black Beauty stick insects (Peruphasma schultei) are

now causing lots of excitement in Y5. Native to a very

small area of Northern Peru, they feed on the leaves of

the Peruvian pepper tree, however, they also eat privet,

lilac and honeysuckle, which is much more widely

available in Sleaford.

The females are larger than the males, ranging between

4.3 and 5.5cm. Both males and females are velvet-black

and covered in minute bristles with eyes of a yellowish

orange and red hind-wings. They are mostly active at

dusk, concealing themselves in the leaf bases of

bromeliads during the daytime, in their natural

environment.

They look quite formidable in a defensive position when

they curl the end of their body Iike a scorpion, however,

they are not poisonous and the liquid they spray

contains glucose and is not harmful to humans.

A black beauty stick insect like those now living in Mrs

Reynold’s classroom.

Outdoor Gym Over the Easter holiday we had an outdoor gym installed thanks to the grant from the Big Lottery Fund. The children have been using it this week and they love it! Trophy Cabinet We have a new trophy cabinet. It has lights! Next time you are in the hall come and take a look. Voluntary Donations We rely on voluntary donations to fund school trips. In order to make a trip viable we really need everyone to pay. In the past we have had to cancel trips and other voluntary funded activities, like the KS1 swimming, because we weren’t covering our costs. GDPR The General Data Protection Act is coming into force in May. This is a law that basically ensures that all organisations (not just schools) safely deal with the information they keep on any individual. You can read our policy and privacy notice on the school website (‘About us’ then on the drop down ‘Key policies’ then ‘Data management’).
