Clean Tech competition
The Clean Tech Competition is a unique, worldwide research and design challenge for
students. The program encourages scientific understanding of real-world issues and the
integration of environmentally responsible energy sources. Each year, the Clean Tech
Competition addresses an issue that is grounded in core technological competency areas
and focuses on the next great engineering challenges. The competition is designed to foster
a deeper understanding of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) related
concepts, recognise outstanding talent, and prepare the next generation of globally
competitive innovators.

Decadal plan for chemistry in Australia survey
The National Chemistry Committee (as part of the Australian Science Academy) is
formulating a Decadal Plan for Chemistry in Australia. We would like to survey all
stakeholders in school education, industry and academia. For more information about the
plan go to http://chemistrydecadalplan.org.au/
We would appreciate if DEC teachers could complete the survey at:

Free school resources
The Opwall Trust has developed case studies containing small data sets from different
biodiversity researchers around the world for use as free classroom exercises. The case
studies are divided into five modules:
Ecosystems – Coral reefs (e.g. sea urchins as Caribbean keystone species)
Ecosystems – Rainforests (e.g. quantifying forest disturbance)
Ecological survey techniques (e.g. Distance sampling for herbivores in South Africa)
Animal behaviour (e.g. scan and focal sampling of macaques)
Natural resource utilisation and sustainability (e.g. determining sustainable hunting
quotas in the Amazon)

SCHOOlS FEEDBACK COMMENtSOpwall has been important to me, pastorally the experience is invaluable. Students who perhaps may be problematic in the classroom have blossomed out on site, to see a student develop their personality to a higher level is invaluable.Matthew Clint from Kesteven and Sleaford High School, UK; School Teacher, Mexico Expedition
Students got involved with numerous different studies and everything was relevant to their A-levels. the students eyes were really opened to new experiences and the scientists were incredibly giving of their time and knowledge.Dan Grossman, Fortismere School, UK; School Teacher, Indonesia Expedition
If you want your students to be fully engaged in the endeavor of scientific enquiry and research, this program will fulfill that need. they are engaged in real scientific research that cannot be replicated in any classroom.Vicki lee landersman, DeMatha Catholic High School, USA; School Teacher, Peru Expedition
this is our 5th expedition with Opwall and it just keeps getting better.Dave Arnold, Brookfield Community School, UK; School Teacher, Mexico Expedition
the experience gives students the ability to work in their chosen science field with experts – the program here is the spark these students will use to ignite their bright future. thank you!Josh Edgell, Queen Anne’s County High, USA; School Teacher, Honduras Expedition

Wallace and Darwin Voyages to Evolution mapTo mark the 100th anniversary of Alfred Russel Wallace’s death Opwall has produced an A3 sized poster (594mm x 420mm) showing the voyages of Wallace and Darwin and how they both developed the idea of evolution by natural and sexual selection. This map is free of charge to schools and is a great educational resource
If you want an example copy of the data sets and biodiversity lectures and the free Wallace and Darwin poster then please contact your local Opwall office (see back).
Data Sets and Biodiversity lecturesThe Opwall Trust (charity number 1078362) has developed case studies containing small data sets from different biodiversity researchers around the world that can be used as classroom exercises and are available free of charge. In 2012/13 copies of these 12 case studies were being introduced and used in 700 schools worldwide whilst for 2013/14 an additional 18 case studies are being added to the original data sets. The case studies are divided into five modules:
• Ecosystems – Coral reefs (e.g. sea urchins as Caribbean keystone species)
• Ecosystems – Rainforests (e.g. quantifying forest disturbance)
• Ecological survey techniques (e.g. Distance sampling for herbivores in South Africa)
• Animal behaviour (e.g. scan and focal sampling of macaques)
• Natural resource utilisation and sustainability (e.g. determining sustainable hunting quotas in the Amazon)
