Round 2
Find That Variable! – 10 points Click HERE to read about this experiment! What was the problem in this study? Sponge Bob wanted to find out if Clean-O
detergent would clean his pants.
Next Question
Sponge Bob Clean Pants!
Sponge Bob noticed that his favorite pants were not as clean as they used to be. His friend Sandy told him he should try using Clean-O detergent, a new brand of laundry soap she found at Sail-Mart. Sponge Bob thought this might work so he washed one pair of pants in plain water and another in water with Clean-O detergent. After washing both pairs a total of 3 times, the pants washed in Clean-O did not appear to be any cleaner than the pants washed in plain water. BACK TO 10 pts, 20 pts, 30 pts, 40 pts, 50 pts
Find That Variable!– 20 points Click HERE to read about this experiment! What was the control “group”? The pants washed in plain water (the “test
factor” was not applied to them).
Next Question
Find That Variable!– 30 points Click HERE to read about this experiment! What was the manipulated variable? The detergent (the “test factor”)
Next Question
Find That Variable!– 40 points Click HERE to read about this experiment! What was the responding variable? The cleanliness of the pants (the factor he
looked at to see if the experiment worked)
Next Question
Find That Variable!– 50 points Click HERE to read about this experiment! What is Sponge Bob’s conclusion? Clean-O detergent does not work, therefore
his hypothesis was wrong!
Next Question
Parts of Experiment – 10 points The number of manipulated (tested)
variables in a valid experiment ONE!
Next Question
Parts of Experiment – 20 points The variables in an experiment that are the
SAME for all experimental subjects. Constants
Next Question
Parts of Experiment – 30 points The group/subject in an experiment that is
used to compare to and is usually treated under “normal” conditions.
CONTROL
Next Question
Parts of Experiment – 40 points The variable that the scientist measures,
also known as the dependent variable. Responding variable
Next Question
Parts of Experiment – 50 points The variable that the scientist manipulates
or tests—the variable that is “different” between all groups/subjects in the study.
Manipulated (independent) variable
Next Question
Steps of Sc. Method – 10 points Suzy writes down the height of her plants
each week. Recording Data
Next Question
Steps of Sc. Method – 20 points Suzy finds that soil with 40 grams of
fertilizer produced the healthiest, tallest plants.
Conclusion
Next Question
Steps of Sc. Method – 30 points Suzy wonders how much fertilizer is best
for her plants. Stating the problem
Next Question
Steps of Sc. Method – 40 points Suzy adds no fertilizer to one plant group
and then adds 10 g, 20 g, 30 g, 40 g, and 50 g to the soil of her experimental groups.
Experiment.
Next Question
Steps of Sc. Method – 50 points Suzy explains that she thinks the plant
group receiving 30 g of fertilizer will have the best growth.
Hypothesis

Next Question
Misc. – 20 points Define objective reasoning Using facts and data
Next Question
Misc.– 30 points Define pseudoscience A type of science based on thoughts and
feelings NOT data or facts
Next Question
Misc. – 40 points Why is a control group necessary in an
experiment? So you have something to compare to “the
norm”
Next Question
Misc.– 50 points Why is it important to use ethics in any
experimental situation? Explain and give an example.
You use ethics so that your results are reliable and trustworthy for others to replicate and learn from
