Scientific NotationAccuracy & Precision
LabGT Chem 8/28/14
Drill
Multiply (3.5 x 103)(4.0 x 105) (8.2 x 1013)(1.0 x 10-
5)
Divide (8.2 x 1013)/(1.0 x 10-
5) (1.5 x 103)/(3.0 x 106)
And we get… 1.4 x 109
8.2 x 108
8.2 x 1018
5.0 x 10-4
Objectives
IWBAT Practice with scientific notation Define precision and accuracy Perform measurements with precision and
accuracy.

Scientific Method Qs?
Any?
Precision vs Accuracy
I will draw a target and discuss the diagram.
Precision & Accuracy
What is precision? Precision is how close a series of
measurements are to each other.
What is accuracy? Accuracy is how close a measurement is
to a “standard”. For example, the center of a bullseye.

Accuracy and Precision Lab
You will work in the same pairs as Monday.
Now, go into the lab and follow the directions to gather data for Trial 1 of the Accuracy and Precision Lab.
All done? Come back to seats and do the calculations for Trial 1.
Record your percent error on the board.
If time, return to lab to try again.
Closure
How accurately can one measure using a ruler? Using a graduated cylinder?
Is there a formal way to represent this concept?
