It is with great pleasure and disnct honor, for me, to convey my hearelt felicitaons and congratulaons to the officers and members of the Philippine College of Radiology, as it holds its 70th Annual Convenon on February 15 to 17, 2018 at the Grand Ballroom, Marrio Hotel Newport, Pasay City, with the theme entled: “Oncologic Imaging: Eyes on the Big C”. Medical science and technology innovaons have, in recent years, rapidly advance at a pace that render some of the skills learned in the past, obsolete with the passing of me. It delights me therefore to know that members of the Philippine First of all, I would like to welcome all the delegates, exhibitors and speakers to our current acvity - the 70th Annual Convenon and Inducon Ceremonies of the Philippine College of Radiology. The theme for our present Convenon, “All Eyes on the Big C”, relates to an ancient scourge, which sll elicits a lot of terror and dread from the populace despite all the advances that have been made in its diagnosis and treatment. Cancer connues to exert a substanal mortality rate among those afflicted, jusfying the fear it causes. Perhaps a reason why Cancer is so difficult to manage and control is because it is not really a single disease like leprosy or In the last decade, advances in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer have achieved a significant increase in the general and disease-free survival of affected paents. This, however, also increased the complexity of therapeuc decisions. The tradional view of the radiologist as a physician who adds value to the health care system, solely by generang and interpreng diagnosc images, is already outdated. The radiologists’ roles have expanded to encompass economic gatekeeping, polical advocacy, public health delivery, paent safety, quality of care improvement, and informaon technology. It is actually a manifestaon of several diseases! It consists of a multude of disorders that have the same end result - the uncontrolled and destrucve growth of ssue. So the theme of our Convenon should actually be “All Eyes on the Many Small c’s!”. All these small c’s have to be managed in a different manner. However, there is a common thread running among all these small c’s; this is that in order for a high likelihood of cure to occur, a correct diagnosis should be established early! So here lies the Big C (Challenge) for our Specialty aside from our secondary tasks of Staging, Prognosis and Follow-up. Our lectures for the following three days shall touch on these primary and secondary tasks. As President of the Philippine College of Radiology, I would like to extend my hearelt thanks to all who have contributed to pung this whole thing together - our hard-working Organizers, our esteemed foreign and local Lecturers and our Industrial Partners. Radiologists must understand what other physicians expect and inform them about the usefulness of imaging modalies. Opmal imaging and image interpretaon of usually encountered cancer condions will be reviewed. Pialls in image interpretaon, including MRI arfacts, will be tackled.
