Are you ready to
“Tackle The Challenge?”
Are you
ready totackle
the
CHALLENGE?
In 2012, we were four separate schools, and we were just and idea.
Lovejoy ElementaryHart Elementary
Puster Elementary SCMS
Then, in 2013, we became…
5th and 6th Graders:
THINK• Like rules and logic
• Want to know WHY
• Product based work
• Invested in purposeful schoolwork
• Value Community
• Begin to see world from different perspectives
DO• Boys and girls start to
separate
• Balance between individuality & group
• Cliques – test limits
• Need to challenge authority
• Responsiblities and contradicting
5th and 6th Graders:
FEEL & SAY• Proud of academic products
• Saving face
• Compare themselves to their peers
• Moody and sensitive
• Appreciate humor
• Empathetic
• Appears secure
NEEDS• Like order and structure• Sleep• Physical Activity• Food• Time Management• Hands On Engagement• Quiet Time• Discovering phones• Discussions/Talk Time• Cross Curricular Connections
We are the bridge between dependent learners to independent learners.
We began building our culture.
1. Be ProactiveI have a “Can Do” attitude. I choose my actions, attitudes and moods. I don’t blame others. I do the right thing without being asked, even if nobody is looking.
2. Begin With the End in MindI plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a difference. I am an important part of my school. I look for ways to be a good citizen.
3. Put First Things FirstI spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am organized.
4. Think Win-WinI want everyone to be a success. I don’t have to put others down to get what I want. It makes me happy to see other people happy. I like to do nice things for others. When a conflict arrives, I help brainstorm a solution. We all can win!
The Habits
5. Seek First to UnderstandI listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoints. I listen to others without interrupting. I am confident in voicing my ideas.
6. SynergizeI value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different from me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people’s ideas to solve problems. I know that “two heads are better than one”. I am a better person when I let other people into my life and work.
7. Sharpen the SawI take care of my body by eating right, exercising, and getting sleep. I spend time with family and friends. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places.

GT ELAR
In addition to studying Peak, and Charlotte Doyle this semester, GT will
complete a cross-curricular novel, Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson, which will
be discussed in GT Social Studies as well.
Novel units are completed at an accelerated pace, and final assessments
involve independent and group final products.
Grammar goals are set monthly along with reading goals, and students
consciously develop action statements to help them attain these
goals.LAVA and Caesar's English studies are incorporated together to
build vocabulary, and assess prior knowledge.
Students help in co-constructing unit
expectations after being provided a
structure for skills to be assessed and
time frame allotted.
