SCMS Hawkeye
In the beginning of the school year the social studies de-partment decided that it was time to resurrect a SCMS trip to our nation’s capital. We investi-gated several or-ganizations and set-
tled on what we felt was the most profes-sional option, Explore America. EA de-signed a unique experience for our stu-dents, which Miss Mindy Nelson and I presented for approval to the school board last fall. With their blessing, we be-gan recruiting and fundraising. Six months later we are almost ready to depart for our trip!
When we began this process, we had no idea how many students would be in-terested in attending. We knew the $1250 price tag was steep and we did not know how many students would want to take a trip of this nature. We were staggered by the response. We now have 59 students, 9 parent chaperones, and 5 staff chaper-ones set to fly out of Milwaukee on Friday, May 20
th. With that many students signing
up, we had to get creative with our fund-raising. Here are some of the events, initi-atives we organized:
Bowl-a-thon T-shirt sales Leaf-raking, snow-shoveling Christmas shop at SCMS Gift-wrapping at Wal-Mart, the Well Candy sales Bake sales Raffles
The money raised with these opportu-nities helped some students, but the price tag was still pretty high for 13 and 14 year olds to come up with. In order to help, I

contacted as many community organizations as I could to get scholarship opportunities. The response was humbling. The Rotary Club gave a scholarship to Marissa Milavitz, a 7
th grader, based on her presen-
tation to their executive board and her help selling raffle tickets. Avery Dreier and Wy-att Brandt, both 7
th graders, earned scholar-
ships from the American Legion and Veter-ans of Foreign Wars, respectively, for their efforts in helping those organizations. The SCMS PTA awarded eight scholarships to some of the best students in our school after they presented to the PTA in late February (Ethan Bolin, Peyton Buerman, Kiley Ru-sch, Gracie Onesti, Morgan Weinig, So-phia Hanauer, Hannah Seehafer, and Mat-tilyn Koehler). Finally, Dollars for Scholars awarded our trip $7,500 to be distributed to qualified students to help. This was given to students who completed an essay and pack-et of credentials to the main office. The win-ners of this scholarship were Gracyn Habeck, Jadon Hauman, Catishe Gri-gnon, Michaela Aschenbrenner, Lucas te Plate, Rory Johnson, Katelyn Laatsch, Connor Kramer, Larson Wendorff, Mor-gan Pecore, Kendra White, and Grace Huntington. All of these scholarships helped enormously; we could not have done this trip without the help from these organi-zations and the efforts of the scholarship winners.
We are planning one final fundraiser to help students get some spending money for the trip. Other than that, all that remains is to get the students organized and ready to go on an adventure. I am looking forward to spending three days with 59 impressive young people exploring our nation’s capital! It should be a nice memory for everyone involved. e do not help them to feel motivat-ed to learn.

Things have been busy as usual down in Tech Ed.

dents excited as we will race the cars upon com-
pletion of the project. Class champions will square
off in a winner take all race between all three clas-
ses. May the best car win! In 8th grade tech ed we
continue to work on individual shop projects. There
are some nice project being made right now in-
cluding benches, picnic tables, night stands, ta-

Sixth grade students have been participating in a March Madness competi-tion in homeroom over the past several weeks. This week’s challenge involved building the tallest free standing tower possible using only a cup, paper, index cards and paper clips. In Ms. Schmidt’s
homeroom, the tower was 105 centimeters tall!

Sixth Grade ELA
Sixth graders just finished a unit in which students read biographies, wrote poetry, and designed projects about biographies and autobiog-raphies. We will be continuing with literature discussion groups in our next unit and are reading novels that have an environmental theme. Our next major writing assignment will be in-formative.
Sixth Grade Wish List As the year is starting to wind down, the sixth grade teachers are finding that there are some students who are coming to class without the needed supplies. Please check with your stu-dent to see if he/she needs: pencils/pencil lead, pens, erasers, loose leaf paper, a folder etc. Making sure your child has the supplies needed for class can go a long way in helping his day go smoothly and ensuring that she has the tools needed to be successful in school. We appreciate your help!
The 7th grade science stu-
dents have been studying de-
composers like fungi and bac-
teria. They have also been
investigating genes and the
traits they show. Are you a
roller or a non-roller? We will be studying
food webs as well as the cells, tissues, or-
gans, and systems of various invertebrate and
vertebrate animals for the remainder of the
year. If you like digging into your
work, you’ll enjoy the dissections
to come.

Students in 7th grade math are in the middle of a Geometry Unit where they are
exploring triangular frameworks, classifying triangles, determining missing angle
measures, and calculating volume and surface area for various geometric shapes.
They are also learning how to use a compass, protractor, and ruler to precisely con-
struct and measure triangles, as well as many other types of polygons. Class con-
versations have centered around where students see and use Geometry in their
daily lives to help them make connections with the skills they are learning!
