A warm welcome to our new students who completed their induction days back in August. Students had two induction days which greatly helped them settle into life in the CBS. The vast majority of First year students use eBooks in a classroom setting and this is the second year of our iPad initiative which is proving to be a huge success. As we wel- come our new students we wish the best of luck to the Leaving Cert class of 2015, the majority are now staring their third level education. Welcome to our First Year 1st Year Hurling Class League Final Four Transition Years students travelled to South Korea to represent Ireland at the Sage Global World Cup follow- ing their success at the Young Social Innovators competi- tion held earlier in the year. October 2015

CBS Thurles 1816—2016

I would firstly like to wish all in our school community best wishes for 2015. As we enter a new year our school is very busy

with the core business of teaching and learning as well as a substantial programme of extra and co-curricular activity. I

thank teachers for their generosity of spirit in delivering this extensive programme of activities which is so important for

the development of students and for the formation of school spirit.

Next year we will be celebrating our Bicentenary and plans are nearly complete to mark this huge achievement for the

school community. A full list of events and activities will be provided next term.

First Year Hurling and Soccer blitz

Our first year pupils took part in the annual blitz against teams from The

Abbey C.B.S. Our entire cohort of first years traveled to Tipperary town

where they were divided into teams of twelve. Each team played several

games over the course of the morning with points being allocated to

winning teams to reveal the winners. Thankfully, Thurles won the compe-

tition and retained the James O‟ Donoghue Perpetual Trophy. „Well done‟

also to the fourth year pupils who managed the teams and refereed and

umpired the games.

The soccer blitz took place on 18th September for first year students.

Each of our five classes was divided into three teams which then played

each other in a „Champions League‟ format. Each team played six games

in what was a very enjoyable event.

First Year Soccer and Hurling competitions will commence in the next

few weeks .

Over the Summer the Board of Management invested in the upgrading of our sci-

ence facilities in the school. This included the installation of new laboratory furni-

ture for both teachers and students. New equipment and materials were also

purchased to ensure that the most up to date facilities are available.

The new spacious rooms allow for increased movement for practical work and the

installation of 70 inch interactive TV screens in all science rooms ensures that

students have access to a modern and visually stimulating learning environment.

Thanks to the Moyne/Bellevue residence Association who kindly donated

€500 to our Zambian Immersion Fund following the successful Joe Dolan

Tribute Night in July. Our thanks to past pupil Tommy Barrett who helped

organize the fundraising event.

Our under-19 panel began their F.A.I. Senior Cup campaign in style, re-

cording a 4-0 home win against Nenagh C.B.S.. Midway through the first

half Dale Loughnane, the team captain, wrote his name into the history

books when he scored the school‟s first ever competitive goal, expertly

dispatching a penalty which he himself had won. Jack Cleary neatly

finished off an excellent move just before half-time and he was on target

again early in the second half, finding the corner of the net from the

edge of the area. Nenagh enjoyed good spells of possession throughout

the game but the Thurles defence remained solid and a fine team display

was rounded off with minutes to go, when Tommy Teer added a fourth

goal.

Next up for the panel will be an away tie against Borrisokane Community

College.

Our first year pupils had a great day out towards the end of September when they travelled to Kilkenny for their art

and history excursion. They began the day by watching the Irish-made animation, „Song Of The Sea‟ before proceeding to the

Butler Gallery where they met Rory Conway, an animator who had worked on the award-winning movie they had seen earlier in

the day. Mr. Conway then conducted an

animation workshop which the pupils

found highly enjoyable.

After leaving the gallery, the group paid a

visit to Kilkenny Castle where they partici-

pated in a guided tour of the medieval

structure. While at the castle, the students

drew sketches of some of the castle‟s

architectural features and they hope to

use these sketches as a basis for an up-

coming ceramics-based project. Stu-

dents will also complete animation work

as part of their first year Art CLass

Our transition year pupils attended the highly informative TY Expo in The

HUB, Kilkenny. The primary objective of the Expo was to inform students

of the myriad opportunities that await them in transition year and to

inspire them to get involved and make the most out of their time in TY.

There were over one hundred exhibitors present on the day encourag-

ing students to partake in a wide variety of fields.

There were stalls there promoting political parties, charities, sporting

organisations, ecological programmes, computer programming, busi-

nesses and careers, self-defence, mental health, creative writing, adven-

ture activities, youth organisations and a host of other interests. The

students really enjoyed the exhibition and hopefully it will have inspired

them to make the most of transition year. After all, as the Expo handbook

stated, in TY „ You get out what you put in‟. U.L.A.C

Positive mental health enables young people to live fulfilling

lives. Promoting the mental health and well-being of our young

people is a shared responsibility.

Schools are in a unique position to promote mental health and

emotional wellbeing and to identify young people experiencing

emotional distress. Responsibility for mental health and well-

being also rests with the wider school community.

Mental health and well-being are linked to developing a sense of

connectedness to school to enable young people experience

success, and to develop their social competencies and resili-

ence to face the challenges of everyday living. Events for stu-

dents included;

Humorfit Drama for all 2nd and 3rd year students.
