Bondies,

Welcome to week one! After the crazi-ness of O Week you’d expect it to be qui-

etening down with students heading to class but the September semester is only getting busier.

This week we’ve had a number of huge events and things are heating up with Club Sign On Day and Pub Crawl to finish off the week.

If you haven’t yet bought your Bondstock tickets, jump online while you still can at www.bondstock.com.au for the last ones. Bondstock kicks off on Sunday night and is sure to be a brilliant week.

Our BUSA term is almost coming to an end and while it’s certainly been bittersweet, seeing the biographies of the candidates in this edition is a wonderful remind-er that we’ll be leaving you in very capable hands. There are some brilliant ideas contained in these pag-es, so please come to the Presidents’ Debate on Mon-day evening to hear from the candidates themselves.

BLOG POST #18

Experiencing social inequity and attempting to make a tangible difference has been an eye opening experience of our trip thus far. Today was one such instance.

Today our internships were disrupted due to unrest within several regional townships we had intended to visit. Local strikes regarding the targeting of public transport operators on roads has escalated within recent days, bringing a large number of public services to a halt within the greater Cape region.

The strikes have brought about significant violence and over 4 buses have been scorched to the ground - an area we will avoid.

We wished specifically to visit a satellite Legal Aid Clinic in Khayelitsha which the university operates to service those who cannot make their way onto the campus. In the next few days we are hoping to visit a similar clinic and a community court in a region free from riots.

Even though we were unable to head into the community we busied ourselves drafting documents, letters and court summons for the clinic’s in house attorneys, in amongst the client interviews.

We hope for a safe end to the unrest and look forward to travelling into the community should the opportunity arise.

After 12 months of improving your educational experience, Luke believes he can do more for you as your President. Luke believes your life at Bond can be improved in two ways: * Rewarding your passion What makes a Bondy a Bondy is their passion for whatever part of student life you choose. BUSA should reward you for this passion. To reward you for choosing to study at this stellar university, Luke will lead a review of Faculties’ adherence to university policy so these important protections are enforced. To reward you for the passion you inject into your sporting and cultural clubs, Luke will focus all club funding towards improving your student experience. This will be achieved by instituting an advanced club filing system so BUSA can better monitor club events and reward clubs that real-ly make their mark. To reward your passion for fitness, Luke will fight to provide free gym access to your significant others. * Engaging with students Under Luke, BUSA will engage with students by being friendly, open and approach-

able. Luke will foster an equal and engaging culture in BUSA through a grassroots initiative where BUSA presence will be felt at every SAM-funded event. Furthermore, Luke will revitalise the Bond spirit by encouraging your presence at sporting events and directly supporting every club’s promotion. You can question Luke at the Presi-dent’s Debate this Monday at 8pm. Ignite Bond spirit at https://www.facebook.com/

ASHLEY BLACKBURN - SECRETARY CANDIDATE

My name is Ashley Blackburn and I am running for Secretary for BUSA. You’re already aware by now that BUSA elections are upon us and have most likely been flooded with information. I could tell you all the things that make me awesome and how I once wrestled a bear (famous

story) however those things are not as important as whether or not you’ll think I will do a good job. I’m currently Vice President of the Women’s Welfare Society as well. The secretary of

BUSA undertakes a more serious role in organising the administrative roles of the committee and ensuring that BUSA is legally compliant. The secretary is also responsible for maintaining chemistry and morale between committee members. The position is also responsible for the transparency of BUSA to the student body. These matters are extremely vital to an effectively

run committee. It may not be as exciting as other positions but it is one that is vital to the student committee. The secretary is also responsible for day to day contact with fellow Bondies

and as such I should explain that I’m a great entertainer in that aspect but more importantly I’m approachable and friendly. I can also tell you stories about bear wrestling which may or

may not be a complete fabrication. I can flatter you with cookies and try to win your heart but in the end I want you to vote for me if you think I’m going to do an effective job as secretary of

BUSA.

JESSICA SARGENT - TREASURER CANDIDATEJessica (Sync Pod) is running for Treasurer with Jack Leonard (President) and Maddie McDermid (Secre-tary). Jessica commenced her Bachelor of Business (Marketing)/Commerce (Finance) in 122. Currently

on campus and the importance of student associations and clubs in contributing to the Bond student experience. As Treasurer, Jessica would like to enhance communication to the Bond community and ensure

that BUSA’s financial position strengthens over her time in the position, while ensuring BUSA is able to maximise their contribution to the Bond student experience.

Policies:Communication and Accessibility: Jessica aims to increase access to the treasurer, to ensure the process is approachable to students and to increase student awareness of how their SAM fees are being utilised in

the Bond community.Increase Accountability for Funding Allocation: Jessica will implement a process to increase the account-

ability for funding for clubs and societies to enhance the efficiency of funding allocations to ensure students receive maximum benefit.

Source Additional Revenue Streams: Jessica will seek new sources of external revenue to ensure BUSA is continually able to provide more to the Bond community now and to stabilise their financial position into

the future.

Emphasizing postgraduate events, including the growth of the Justin Lane Dinner and estab-lishment of a semestral Wine Retreat; 4. Development of Women in Law initiative. I started my dual degree - Juris Doctor and Master of International Relations (LAWS) focusing on International Law and Diplomacy - in September of 2012. During my time here at Bond, I have served as a Student Ambassador for which I was awarded a Platinum certification, Senior Research Assistant for the Faculty of Society and Design, Secretary of the Bond University Unit-ed Nations Student Association (BUUNSA), Postgraduate officer of the Law Student Association (LSA) and Vice President of Postgraduate Student Association (PGSA). I firmly believe that my experience here at Bond has prepared me for this role, especially my time as Vice President of the PGSA, during which I began these initiatives. This is why my election in office will not only be fruitful but it will be the necessary change to ensure that your student life here at Bond is everything you wish it to be!

DEBORA KOCAK -INTERNATIONAL CANDIDATETime tamay-ke a change! Hi! Guten Tag! Bonjour! Konnichiwa! Namaste! I am Tamay Debora Kocak and I want to be Bond university’s next International Student Liason. Being from Belgium and an international student myself, I believe I can easily become a go-between for our university’s student associa-tion and the international students that come here and wonder why the people here don’t just use Australia’s kangaroo’s as a mode of transportation. The majority of the international cohort know me already but I am always eager to meet new people. Don’t worry, I don’t bite unlike a lot of the things that reside here in this gorgeous country. I’ve been living on this amazing campus for 8 months and feel like I’ve found a second home. That’s the beauty of Bond’s smaller intake of students; you can all become a family, however corny that may sound. Before I wonder off and meet some more people, let’s just say your vote for International Student Liaison will not be wasted on me. I strive to: -ensure international students are getting out there and joining the university’s cultural and sporting clubs AND -support the university’s student association in whatever needs to be done -even bigger and better parties (and a memorable international week) So it’s time, time TAMAY-ke a change!

LAURA MARAGANO- INTERNATIONAL CANDIDATEHello, my name is Laura Maragano and I’m running for International Student Liaison. I’m currently in my

second semester here at Bond studying a Bachelor of International Relations. I am an active member of the Bond community, participating in activities such as weekly Res Wars, the Student Ambassador Program,

and Italian Language Director of Bond Latin Society.I have been moving around the world since I was three months old and have lived in a total of nine countries, so I can definitely understand what international

students feel when coming to a completely new environment with new cultures and languages. My diverse cultural experience has found my interest in the position of International Student Liaison and I believe that

I would make a perfect representative for such position.

If elected for International Student Liaison for 2014/15 I will:-Actively organize events/activities such as: International Food Fest, in order to integrate domestic and

international students for a greater experience at Bond.-Ensure that I act as representative for the ideas and beliefs of the International Student Community at

Bond-Diversify deeper relationships with international organisations both external and internal to Bond Univer-

sity -Promote greater cultural diversity through hosting events in which students are exposed to the greater

international community

Please feel free to approach me if you have any enquires about my policies or experiences or even to say hello.

FIDELI SVENSSON - INTERNATIONAL CANDIDATEHi everyone!

I am Fideli Svensson and I am running for International Students Liaison. I originally come form Sweden, but have been living in Australia for over a year before I came to Bond I did a lot of traveling and spend among other places 6 month in Canada. My big pas-

sions in life are skiing, traveling and experience new cultures. And now on to the formalities, I have previous experiences on boards and believe that I have a suiting personality for the position as your new International Students Liaison. I am in general

a very happy person that find motivation in challenges and optimistic people. I am an extrovert for better and for worse and with that comes my fear for awkward silences.

You should vote for me as your international students Liaison because I am convinced that I can make your life as an international student at Bond a little bit better.

My two main goals for this position is: - Easier access to information about what services is offered for international students.

Bond have a lot of services that would be helpful for international students however a lot of us do not know about them. My intentions are to make sure that all international students are

aware about the help and services they have the right to. - Create new opportunities to feel the real Australian culture. This would be possible

through better integration with the Gold Coast community.

am the current Social Director on BUSA, an Executive Council Member for B.A.S.I.C and the Treasurer for the Volleyball Club. I was also the Convenor of Bond Children’s Holiday Camp in 2013. On my term in BUSA I hope to implement three policies to ensure a social experience

that Bond students have never experienced but also streamline the admin perspective to make it easier for students to hold and run events.

student feedback forms and online surveys will play a major role along with the introduction of new events. Finally, I want to work with all FSA’s and all Sporting/Cultural Clubs to ensure the social calendar is easily accessible and visible to all students at any time. Vote corRECt

Health Sciences & Medical Students Association in the position of Social Director at the begin-ning of this year. During my term on BUSA I aim to deliver on three policies to ensure growth in the student social experience at Bond. An increase in both variety of events and student

involvement will see an improvement in Bond’s social culture. Through increasing student in-put in the running of BUSA social events, I aim to provide all Bond students a wider variety of organised social events. This will be achieved with an expansion of social events as well as the continued development of new external entertainment at Bond events. Through organisation

I aim to increase support for cultural clubs and FSA’s social events by creating a streamlined system that can be used when hiring AV equipment and needing assistance with AV set up.

This system will allow clubs easier and guaranteed access to BUSA’s resources. Vote corRECt because we will be the strongest REC pod that will give the best student social experience to

ROSE BURKE - SOCIAL DIRECTOR CANDIDATE

Hi, I’m Rose Burke and I’m running for Social Director in the upcoming BUSA elections. Originally from the most isolated major city in the world, Perth, you may wonder if I had ever even socialised prior to coming to Bond (I had). Currently in the faculty of Society and Design studying a bachelor of film, I feel I am extremely suited to the position and am capable of handling all it requires. As a film and television student, I would love to incorporate videography at major events on top of the already great photos available for free to students through social media. I think it is also extremely important to keep the high standard of original and exciting events and themes, and whilst I have endless ideas of my own, I hope to accurately represent the student population and therefore am open to and greatly appreciate suggestions and feedback. In correlation to those policies, I believe what makes Bond events so great is the students themselves, and therefore I want to strongly encourage any budding student photographers, cinematographers, DJs, and the likes to have the opportunity to share their skills and passions through events. These are the main things I want to add into or improve upon with our already great social events. Whether at Dons or crawling through Surfers, I believe that as Social Director I could create the best possible nights and memories for all who have the privilege of calling themselves a Bondie.

ANTON TAN - CULTURAL CLUBS & SOCIETIES CANDIDATE

Pham who over the past 3 semesters introduced the club mentor system. If elected I will retain this mentor system and additionally plan to establish a formal cultural club committee, which will oversee the

global food festival, international week and many other events. So please take the time this election to vote Anton Tan for Cultural

Club and Societies Director. For more information regarding my poli-cies please visit the Facebook page.

JACQUELINE MCGRATH -CULTURAL CLUBS & SOCIETIES CANDIDATECultural Clubs and Societies Director for BUSA 2014/15 My name is Jacqui McGrath and I am running for Cultural Clubs and Societies Director of BUSA 2014/15. I’m from Coffs Harbour,

NSW and moved up here this year, beginning in Semester 141. Over my time here I have been involved in many aspects of Bond University. I am currently

on the Student Philanthropy Council, Secretary of the Women’s Welfare Society and recently competed in the domestic Administrative Law Moot Competition. As an A block resident I

have also participated in Res Wars, Social Netball and am looking forward to participating in the Bond Children’s Holiday Camp later this year.

During my term on BUSA I will be focusing on efficiency, encouragement and support. These will be achieved through efficient electronic documentation of Club Constitutions to allow for support of succession plans and the continuity of the club culture. Further, by working closely with all BUSA members and the introduction of a transparent calendar system, I will achieve

greater event attendance while providing assistance and encouragement. My acknowledgement of the necessity for constant, open channels of communication will

facilitate an expansion and maximization of the already diverse Club culture Bond University fosters.

My previous experience on an FSA and being apart of Clubs and Societies has enhanced my understanding of the severity of the Corporate Relations role and

what the role entails and needs to enhance the future for Bond students. Vote Ctrl + Alt + Delete for BUSA 2014/15 because we are the strongest Administrative keys, and most

CANDIDATES FOR ADMIN POD POSITIONSSPORTS POD - CORPORATE RELATIONS

AASHA PURLING - PUBLICATIONS DIRECTOR CANDIDATEMy name is Aasha Purling and I’m so excited to be a candidate for Publications Director in the Administra-tion pod, Ctrl+Alt+Delete. As a solid and streamlined team, Cindy, Dane and I are focused on task manage-ment: utilizing our specialized skills and experience to raise the bar and implement changes that will ensure the continued effectiveness and long-term success of the administration pod.

After two very successful semesters as Publications Director on SDSA, 4 hit editions of ATLAS, and 2 “Best Publication” awards, I hope to draw from the scope (pun) of my publications expertise and really show the university network what publications can be.

I’m looking to see Scope go online. Not through Issuu, or as a digital publication, but a complete re-structure as a website/blog hybrid. In conjunction with our talented IT candidate Dane, we’ve developed an app that will prompt every time a new article is available. Not only will this make our content more readable, but it also ensures we can deliver content to you instantaneously. This will make the role less time-intensive and less reliant on design experience. We’re saving trees, too. Talk about revolutionary.

This is the perfect format for integrated banner advertising. Cindy and I will develop banner ads on our home pages to strengthen the link from students to FSA events and our corporate sponsors, providing another point of leverage for our sponsorship directors - one that we can prove works.

PARIS FAINT - PUBLICATIONS DIRECTOR CANDIDATEHello Bondies! My name is Paris and I’m your candidate for Publications Director this year. I have experience in designing, writing for and editing more than fifteen magazines, books and businesses, three of which are popular on campus publications. I’d encourage you to vote for me in the upcoming election because I know what it takes to revamp an entire magazine, to create publications from scratch and give the readers exactly what they want!Happy voting,Paris.
