The Artists and Presenters

Gary Beadell completed a music degree from Adelaide conservatorium in piano performance before embarking on his piano technology studies in Germany and the UK . He completed a diploma in Piano Technology in London and then commenced work with Steinway and Sons, servicing and tuning pianos for many of the recording studios and concert venues including The BBC studios, Abbey Road, Wigmore Hall, Barbican and the Royal Albert Hall amongst many others . On his return to Adelaide, Gary continued working for the Adelaide Sympho-ny Orchestra and the ABC and building up an extensive client list . He then worked in a high end piano rebuilding workshop in Auckland for five years, repairing and rebuilding many of the concert instruments with a highly trained team of technicians from Japan and Europe . Gary has been in Melbourne for six years, and looks after pianos for the Melbourne Recital Centre, MSO and ABC Classic FM, as well as building up an extensive client base .

ARIA nominated jazz vocalist and violinist, Fem Belling has exploded onto the Melbourne jazz scene . This South African born artist has sung and played with many of the jazz greats, locally and internationally, London (Ronnie Scotts), Joe Ruberto Trio, John Foreman, The DMJO, Grand Wazoo, JMQ, The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra (ARIA nomination), Reggie Watts, WOMADelaide, Noosa Jazz Fest, and can be seen in Melbourne’s top music venues . She has performed for Her Majesty the Queen at the Royal Variety Show, and spent many years as a leading lady in London’s West End, with lead roles in Hairspray, Fame, Footloose and Cats . Fem recently played Liza Minnelli opposite Todd McKenney in The Boy From Oz . A born performer, Fem showcases her talent and sheer joy in making music, throwing her own spin on standards whilst paying homage to the Jazz Greats .

Robert Chamberlain studied for Bachelors and Masters degrees in Australia under Max Cooke, in Vienna as a winner of the Apex/Robert Stolz Scholarship, and also at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada . He works nationally and internationally as an adjudicator, presenter and performer, and is a partner in the Melbourne based Team of Pianists -Artists in Residence for the National Trust of Australia (Vic) . Between 2004 and 2013 he developed and directed the Team’s annual Spring Piano School, an intensive enrichment program for school aged pianists aged from 6 to 18 . Along with the other three Team of Pianists partners, he performs in and directs the Twilight Chamber Music at Rippon Lea concert series, and the Classic Music in His-toric Venues series, both supported by the C & C Rigg Bequest . Concert engagements have taken

him to Turkey, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, Can-ada, as well as around Australia . His recordings on around 15 CD’s encompass music for solo piano, two pianos, chamber music, piano and voice, and include the Team of Pianists as well as the Tall Poppies, Naxos, Move Records and Vox-Australis labels . Robert is on the piano faculty of the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Monash University, Melbourne . As a scholar he has edited, with violinist Marina Marsden (Sydney Symphony Orchestra), a critical edition of Aus-tralian composer Margaret Sutherland’s Sonata for Violin and Piano (Currency Press, 2000) and written articles and reviews . His research and presentation interests include teaching and learning processes in piano teaching and perfor-mance, creativity in piano pedagogy, and style and technique in piano performance .

The Welsh pianist Rhodri Clarke performs as a chamber musician, collaborative pianist and soloist . After graduating with first class Hon-ours from the Royal College of Music, where he studied under Andrew Ball and Roger Vignoles, he embarked upon a busy performing career which has taken him throughout Europe, USA, South America, Asia and Australia . As a chamber musician and vocal accompanist he has performed in London’s Royal Festival Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie and the Vien-na Konzerthaus . Rhodri’s past collaborations include a Deutsche Grammophon album with the tenor Rolando Villazon and a Carnegie Hall performance with Bryn Terfel . Recently Rhodri relocated to Melbourne, where he is in demand as an instrumental and vocal accompanist and chamber musician . He is currently an Associate Artist at the Australian National Academy of Music, a member of the Melbourne Piano Trio and the newly formed ensemble Zenith with Michael Lampard . He teaches chamber music and piano at Scotch College .

Eidit Golder is a Melbourne-based solo pianist and chamber musician . She is currently Artistic Co-ordinator of the Melbourne Art Song Col-lective (MASC), who perform regularly at the Melbourne Recital Centre to critical acclaim . She received her musical education at the Talma Yalin School For The Performing Arts in Israel and the Victorian College of the Arts . In 1999, Eidit received first place at the Australian National Piano Award . Between 2005 and 2010 Eidit was the pianist with Freshwater Trio, with whom she made numerous festival and concert appearances, including performances at the 2010 Vancouver International Music Festival . She has made a number of professional broadcasts and recordings for the ABC, and has played at the Melbourne International Festival as well as numerous regional festivals . Eidit completed her Masters at Melbourne University under Professor Stephen McIntyre, and is a laureate of the Advanced Performance Program, Australian National Academy of Music . Eidit is active in music education and teaches at Scotch College and Sacre Coeur .

Before coming to Australia in 1987, John Ferguson worked as a Musical Director for the-atres, brass bands and choirs, as well as arrang-ing and conducting for Television South West and Thames Television . As a conductor, John studied with Dr Roy Truby in the UK, and with Robert Rosen and Barry Bignell at the Victori-an College of the Arts in Melbourne, where he gained his Master of Music Performance degree in conducting . In 2001 he received a Symphony Australia scholarship to study with Jorma Panu-la . Past conducting engagements have included the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra strings, the Tasmanian Discovery Orchestra, engagements in Singapore and China, including a recent engagement for the Xiamen International Piano Festival . He has also been principal conductor for Melbourne City Opera and Gilbert and Sul-livan Opera Victoria . In 2007 he conducted the first Australian performance of the Yellow River Concerto with the distinguished Chinese pianist Yin Chengzong, broadcast throughout China by China Central Television . John received the Theatre Guild ‘Musical Director of the Year’ award for conducting the OSMAD production of Les Miserables in 2008, and won again in 2010 for My Fair Lady . John was appointed Director of Music at Scotch College, in 1991 .

A former student of Rita Reichman, Max Foster is emerging as a sought-after performer . He made concerto appearances with the Adelaide, Queensland, Sydney and West Australian Symphony Orchestras, and performed at the Melbourne Recital Centre and City Recital Hall Angel Place . Other past highlights include Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No . 1 with the Queensland and Melbourne Symphony Orches-tras; Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major with Orchestra Victoria; a recital in Parliament House for the Prime Minister and Senior Cabinet; and recitals in Shanghai and Oxford and New York . In 2015 he appeared as soloist with The Juilliard Orchestra, performing in Juilliard’s Peter Jay Sharp Theatre . Max Foster enjoys collaborating with other like-minded musicians and delving into the realm of 21st Century music, perform-ing many of his composer friends’ pieces . An involved music educator, he has been a chamber music coach at Melbourne’s Scotch College, and has given educational concerts including a demonstration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra . He has worked with conductors such as Lutz Köhler, Vladimir Verbitsky, Richard Gill and Jeffery Milarsky .

Max received his undergraduate degree from the Juilliard School (New York) under the guidance of Choong-Mo Kang . He is presently completing a Masters in Music at the Juilliard School under the guidance of Hung Kuan Chen and Tema Blackstone .

Tian Tian Lan (age 15) began learning piano at the age of four with the late Nehama Patkin . He is currently studying under Glenn Riddle, with whom he completed his A .Mus .A with Distinction in 2012 and L .Mus .A in 2013 . He has received prizes in the 2014 Melbourne Recital Centre Bach Competition, the Kault Prize for most outstanding Piano Diploma Candidate (AMEB), as well as numerous first prize awards at Eisteddfods and local piano competitions . He has performed extensively, including as piano soloist for the Saxton Speakers Bureau World Conference and the World Suzuki Conven-tion, and made his concerto debut playing Ian Munro’s Children’s Concerto with the Monash Academy Orchestra in 2009 . Tian Tian also plays in numerous chamber ensembles, as well as first violin in the Scotch College Symphony Orchestra with which he has toured America and Europe, and performed Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No .1 . Recently, he has been invited to the Melbourne Recital Centre’s Masterclass program with Paavali Jumppanen, and later this year will perform Rachmaninoff ’s Piano Concerto No . 3 .

Teresa Lavers studied music and English at the University of Adelaide, graduating with a Bachelor degree with Honours, majoring in piano, a Diploma in Education and a Masters in Music, under the guidance of Clemens Leske Senior . She moved to Melbourne in order to study with Ronald Farren-Price and completed a Masters in Music (Performance) at the Univer-sity of Melbourne . She also spent a three-month sojourn studying piano with Russian pianist Eugene Skovorodnikov at the UBC in Vancou-ver, Canada . Teresa has performed frequently in Australia as a soloist, and has won awards in competitions in both Australia and the UK . She has a keen interest in chamber music, giving numerous public recitals over the years with var-ious soloists, most recently with pianist Lachlan Redd . Teresa is regularly invited to adjudicate Eisteddfods and piano competitions and in 2010 was invited to be on the jury of the Isidor Bajic Memorial International Piano competition . Teresa has been Head of Keyboard Studies at Scotch College since 2003, and is committed to developing musical talent in young children . She is the Artistic Director and founder of the Scotch College Piano Festival and the Scotch College Piano Competition .

With a repertoire of thirty-five concerti, Clemens Leske has performed with the Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, West Australian, Tasma-nian and Queensland symphony orchestras and has played at venues in Spain, the United Kingdom, Singapore, New Zealand, Hungary and China . He has appeared regularly with the Australian String Quartet, the Australian Cham-ber Orchestra and the Moscow Virtuosi . For his London Royal Festival Hall debut he performed Rachmaninoff ’s First Piano Concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra . Recent appearances include performances of Strauss’ Burlesque as well as Beethoven’s Triple Concer-to with the SydneySymphony under the baton of Vladimir Ashkenazy, and Mozart’s K467 Concerto in C at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and Rachmaninoff ’s Third Piano Concerto, both with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra . He was invited on a national tour in partnership with flautist Sir James Galway and performed in this year’s Canberra International Festival of Music . Clemens has released many discs of solo and chamber works, and has recorded extensive-ly for ABC Classic FM and Fine Music 102 .5FM .

Four CDs of solo piano works ranging from Chopin and Schumann to Kurtag and Duck-worth will be released next year . He has served on juries for national and international piano competitions including the ABC’s Young Performers’ Awards, the Lev Vlassenko, and the Shepparton National Piano Award, and is currently Senior Lecturer in Piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and is researching “The Piano Miniature” for a PhD at the Univer-sity of Adelaide . Vladimir Ashkenazy states: “Mr Clemens Leske is in my opinion an extraordi-nary musician and pianist!”

Chiah Quah studied piano with Herbert Stessin, Jane Allen and chamber music with Seth Carlin in the United States . In Melbourne, she furthered her music education and attained her Suzuki Piano Teacher accreditation under the training of Nehama Patkin and Margaret Bland . Chiah has taught and performed in United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Sin-gapore and Australia . Currently, she is a member of the piano teaching faculties of Scotch College, MLC and PEGS . She also has a thriving private studio and is much respected for her work with young musicians .

Russian-born pianist, Marina Rainbow has per-formed internationally as a soloist and chamber musician . Marina completed her Diploma in Teaching and Accompaniment with High Dis-tinction at Gorky Musical College and migrated to Australia in 1993 . While studying a Bachelor of Music Performance at Melbourne University (VCA) she won the Gold medals for “The most Outstanding Artist in the Pianoforte Sections” at the Dandenong Festival of Music and Arts in both 1994 and 1995 and was involved in the 3MBS FM Radio program . In 1996 she received the Astral Salon of Music and Arts Scholarship and in 1997 she was awarded the Postgradu-ate Scholarship to study in Japan, where she completed her Master’s Degree in Music at Aichi

University of Arts and worked as a Lecturer of Piano and Accompaniment at Yokohama Music Academy . Marina won many prestigious music competitions in Japan, including ABC Young Performer’s Award and the Chopin Society Piano Competition . Following her Debut with Osaka Century Symphony Orchestra with Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto 1, she took part in Osaka TV Programs and toured Japan . After returning to Australia, Marina has been engaged in music education, developing her teaching method and writing books on Music Theory . Marina joined Scotch Music Faculty in 2015 .

Lachlan Redd attracted national attention when he replaced Bruno Leonardo Gelber in two performances of Rachmaninov’s third Concerto with the Melbourne Symphony in a live, nation-wide broadcast . The year earlier, he won First Prize at the Fourth International Youth Music Festival, ‘Virtuosi of the Year 2000’ Competition in St Petersburg . He has since performed internationally as both a soloist and recitalist, appearing with nearly all the major Australian orchestras, on ABC TV and FM . The Australian reported, ‘Lachlan Redd is a superb pianist . In Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto … he demonstrated a maturity of conception well beyond his years and a breathtakingly impres-sive technique .’ He has also appeared at the Port Fairy Music Festival as a soloist and concerto artist (Schirmer Ensemble), with the Glenhaven Festival Orchestra, as a guest with the Australi-an Chamber Ensemble, and at St Martin in the Fields, London . He has been Assistant Organist at St Paul’s Cathedral since 2003 .

Lily Shtoltsenberg was born in Ukraine and studied music at the State Music College and Lvov State Conservatoire, graduating with Honours and majoring in Piano and Musicol-ogy . She emigrated to Australia and studied at Monash University having completed a Grad-uate Diploma in Education and later a Master in Education specialising in Music Education . Lily always had a keen interest in accompanying both singers and instrumentalists during her music career . Her interest in children’s music creativity led her to accept a role of a Music Coordinator for the Australian team of children for representation at the International Children’s Music Competition “Crystal Note” in Moscow . The team travelled with Lily to Moscow, where she was responsible for their well-being, daily practice, rehearsals and final performances . Two members of the group were awarded prizes by the International Jury . Lily has been accepted as an Examiner for ANZCA . Her teaching career spread between various Melbourne Colleges and she views her role as a Music Educator and motivator for young performers .
