Teens are tricky customers. You know they are exhausted going into the holidays and need some downtime but will also need entertaining once they’ve chilled out a bit. And entertaining doesn’t mean sandcastles and a swimming pool; it means quad biking, surfing, scuba diving, skiing, zip-lining, getting up close and personal with incredible wildlife and mind blowing Facebook-worthy sights. Our Consultants have put on their thinking caps to come up with some fantastic holidays that teens will love, and parents will have a pretty cool time too.

THE SCOOP

It’s not a happy holiday unless everyone is having a good time. Older children are always the hardest to keep entertained, which is why we are introducing Crew. It’s not a kids club; it’s a cool activity programme for children from 11 years old. It’s led by energetic and engaging Crew Leaders, runs for at least 18-hours over 6 days and is full of fun and varied activities. There’s no base camp, no timetables just prearranged meeting points at different times of the day, taking into account the heat, ability of the group and location of the resort. The action includes available watersports and land-based activities from scuba diving, wakeboarding and paddle boarding to zip wiring, rock climbing and bike treks. Crew is available during the school holidays at Costa Navarino in Greece, Sun Gardens in Croatia and Anassa in Cyprus. It’s just a brilliant and relaxed way to meet new friends and try something new.

THE SCOOP

Begin the journey of discovery in Tokyo, staying at the chic Mandarin Oriental Tokyo. This sprawling metropolis has a life of its own with an energy that is hard to ignore. Spend your days exploring the ancient sites in perfect conjunction with the modern trendy areas such Harajuku, Shibuya and Akihabara where the teenager is king and manga and cosplay rule the streets. Get hands on with a sushi lesson with some of the freshest ingredients you will ever find at The Tsukiji Fish Market or practise your calligraphy or Taiko drumming skills with private lessons with renowned masters of these arts. From Tokyo, jump on the super high speed bullet train to Kyoto and make the Hyatt Regency Kyoto your base. The city offers an enormous wealth of culture including the famous Golden Temple, Ryoanji Temple and Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. However, it’s not all temples and shrines, you can take part in Samurai sword lessons, stroll through Gion to catch sight of Geisha heading out on their evening appointments as well as day trips out to Nara, walking through the ancient capital with free roaming deer in the park. Then, it’s back on the bullet train to Hakone National Park, to relax and take life slowly. Stay at Gora Kadan, a traditional Japanese Inn or Ryokan and be truly pampered, as well as enjoying amazing food. Spend your mornings taking walks through the stunning mountainous countryside and cruises along Lake Ashi, with the chance to see Lake Ashi and then afternoons spent relaxing in your own private onsen - open air bath - made warm by naturally hot spring water found in the area.

TEEPEEADVENTURE

Finnish Lapland, FINLAND

THE SCOOP

This epic off-the-beaten-track family adventure set deep within the Arctic Circle is simply packed with wholesome wilderness experiences certain to capture the imagination of your teens. Fly to the Arctic Circle and start at the Nellim Wilderness Hotel where you can set out by sleigh in search of the Northern Lights, followed by dinner by the campfire. The traditional sport of Finland is cross-country skiing which, as well as being heaps of fun, is a fantastic way to explore the rolling forests and high fells of Lapland. Snowshoeing is also a must-try, whether by the short grey-light hours during the winter months or as part of a Northern Lights hunting trek. The most thrilling and authentic way to reach your teepee hideaway is by husky-pulled sleigh, traversing the mesmerising white-blanket landscape at speed with the dogs panting up ahead of you. Pick up useful tips from the husky mushers before taking the reins yourself and leading your team through the surrounding expanse of snow-clad trees and frozen lakes to your wilderness home. This is where survival skills come into play and you learn how to break through the thick ice in search of fish and fresh water before chopping wood for the campfire by which your chef prepares the freshly-caught ingredients. Your adventure continues with an exhilarating snowmobile safari where, en-route, you can choose to visit a local reindeer herder, get up close with the animals and learn traditional reindeer husbandry and Sami handicraft. You can also visit Lapland in summer for a totally different experience of abundant wildlife, vivid colour, forest foraging, kayaking, trekking and the midnight sun.

The teepees are amazingly cosy and comfortable; you can really

curl up and relax in luxury.

Flying behind a pack of dogs on a sleigh is pretty exciting but

do not let go of the reins!

SAFARI & BEACH

Lewa Downs & Maasai Mara, KENYA & Zanzibar, TANZANIA

THE SCOOP

The Laikipia plateau in Kenya is home to Lewa Wilderness, the perfect base from which to explore the stunning Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. You can do this by camel, horseback, safari vehicle and even from the skies, flying in a bright yellow bi-plane. Wildlife here is diverse and includes good numbers of rhino, lion, wild dog and elephant as well as more unusual species such as the reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra. The Lodge owners, Will and Emma Craig, are passionate about wildlife conservation, adding a really interesting and personal side to your safari. From here fly out to the Maasai Mara to Serian camp, if you are here in August or September you may catch sight of the Great Migration, where 2 million wildebeest and zebra flood the grassy savannah plains and big cats lie in wait for the perfect moment to pounce. Year-round the wildlife here is incredible though, with pods of hippos wallowing in the mud, herds of elephants, prides of lazy lions lounging on the top of the rocky kopjes and cheetah. Then it’s on to the beach and where better than Zanzibar just a short hop away by plane. Stay at Baraza, a luxurious resort on one of the island’s best beaches and enjoy a 2-bedroom villa with your own garden and plunge pool to yourself. Anyone looking to indulge can visit the spa, while those looking to burn some energy can head to the beach to play football or volleyball, or try their hand at kitesurfing, sailing or diving.

At Lewa, relax around the fire after dinner, listening to fascinating stories

of life on the African plains.

THE SCOOP

Think Marrakech and think of vibrant, colourful souks, the odd snake charmer and the waft of exotic smells and spices. Riad Farnatchi is perfectly positioned within the old medina, it has all the features of a traditional Moroccan home and a laid back authentic feel. Marrakech is awash with so much to invigorate your senses, from haggling for slippers and jewellery to tucking into an aromatic tagine. We will provide a guide to help you find your bearings and for adventurous families we can arrange hot air balloon rides, horse-riding in the Palmeraie or camel rides. Continue into the Atlas Mountains, which are snow-capped November to March making them even more spectacular. Stay at Bab Ourika, a charming boutique hotel in an isolated valley and spend your days walking, horse-riding or just sitting by the pool enjoying the views. For the more active, there is white-water rafting and abseiling. You can also go camel trekking, explore local Berber villages or visit the local market in Tnine Ourika. Finish on the coast staying at Sofitel Essaouira Mogador; delve into the town to see the many fish stalls where you can choose your catch and they cook it for you there and then. Teens can enjoy some of the watersports available from the beach or head to the dedicated teens ‘QG Lounge’ and enjoy activities like football or cookery classes.

Bag a sun lounger on the roof garden at Riad Farnatchi and enjoy a couple of chapters of your book.

Start in Vancouver and explore the markets on Granville Island, shop on Robson Street and bike around Stanley Park with its beaches and seawall trail. Next, cross over to Vancouver Island and enjoy a couple of days at Long Beach Lodge, staying in a rainforest cottage. Here, you can take a surf lesson or if that sounds a little too chilly, then wrap up and head out on the ocean by kayak or boat for coastal wildlife watching. You can spot black bears on the sea shore and massive grey whales or pods of orca whales in Clayoquot Sound. Then, back to the mainland to hit the Sea-to-Sky Highway-99 to Whistler, taking in scenic ocean vistas and mountain views. Once you reach Whistler, stay at Nita Lake Lodge on Creekside, overlooking the water, you can head out on stand up paddle boards or head into the resort, an adventure playground and down-hill mountain biking mecca. There’s also zip-lining with a 30-storey descent or rafting some white water rapids. The village itself is a buzzy summer hub, with a weekend farmers market, boutique shops and great restaurants. Finally, head into the wilderness to cowboy country and stay at Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort. It’s a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World and offers an incredible horse-riding programme; you’ll have your own horse for the duration of your stay, to ride through sun-dappled forest trails and flower-strewn meadows in search of bears and wildlife. You can also go heli-hiking, shooting, fishing and swim in the lake.

Burma works well to visit October to April and we can arrange fantastic English-speaking guides throughout. Begin in Yangon, staying at the gorgeous Belmond Governor’s Residence, visit the Shwedagon Pagoda for sunset and stroll through the vegetable, fruit and iron markets of colonial Rangoon. Then on to Kalaw; the Green Hill Valley elephant camp is well worth a visit to feed and wash rescued old working elephants. Next stop Inle Lake; you can drive via Pindaya to see the amazing caves filled with countless golden Buddhas, and from here you can cycle to Heho, it takes about four hours and passes through local Danu tribal villages where you can stop at local homes, it’s an incredible experience. On the lake, you can explore by private boat, spot Intha fishermen and pass floating gardens before visiting local communities who live in stilted homes. Then, fly to Mandalay and head off to Ava, once the medieval capital of Burma, to amble through local villages and see the U Bein Bridge, the longest teak bridge in the world. In Mandalay, you can spot countless maroon clad monks collecting alms, climb Mandalay Hill for sunset or head to the craft markets. Next, board a private boat and cruise down the Irrawaddy to little visited villages undisturbed by time, meet the locals and try to mould your own pot in the traditional style. Continue the cruise on to Bagan to explore the unforgettable temples on foot, bike or from a hot air balloon. Finally, fly to Ngapali for some well-deserved beach time.

This is an animal lover’s dream, with a visit to Ecuador’s Amazon to spot monkeys and macaws by day and caiman, crocodiles and bats by night. Follow this with a trip to the Galapagos Islands to swim with sea lions, penguins and turtles. It’s a real adventure and works well for Christmas, Easter or Summer holidays. Begin your adventure in Quito, Ecuador’s charming capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day trips for thrill-seekers can be arranged to nearby Cotopaxi Volcano for mountain biking or horse-riding excursions. Then it’s into the mighty Amazon to stay at Napo Wildlife Center; the last part of the journey is by paddle boat to reach the lodge. Here, visit colourful parrot clay licks, take a canoe night safari and venture along forest trails, while looking out for the endless wildlife that lives in the forest canopy. Next, the magical Galapagos Islands with a cruise aboard the Santa Cruz II. On land, excursions range from mountain biking on Santa Cruz to BBQs in the highlands, and at sea there’s snorkelling, kayaking and trips out on the glass-bottomed boat. End on the beach at the gorgeous Finch Bay Eco Lodge, where you can take a soak in the pool, walk to nearby Tortuga Bay or try your hand at surfing or scuba diving.

Now this is a pretty cool mountain retreat, a playhouse that is guaranteed to impress teens. Chalet Artemis has its own 12-seater cinema complete with red velvet chairs and popcorn machine, swimming pool, spa area, steam room, hot tub, sauna and a funky contemporary design. Staff are on hand to wait on you hand and foot, bring you tea in bed, get the hot tub on, serve you drinks while you are watching a movie and to book the best restaurants for lunch. The chef will tailor the menus to your liking, be that gourmet 4-course dinners or simply a delicious homemade lasagne – it’s up to you. There’s also a driver service to take you to and from the slopes so there’s no struggling with heavy skis. Out on the slopes you can take a guide from Piste to Powder to experience the fabulous off-piste skiing and there are loads of great mountain restaurants; the Hospiz Alm is a particular favourite of ours with its fun slide to the loos. Hardcore skiers will be in total heaven but there’s also plenty to keep the more leisurely skier occupied and it’s well worth heading over to Lech and Zurs to really get the most out of this extensive ski area. When the sun’s out, head to Rendl Beach to catch some rays and watch the pros in the board park from the comfort of a deckchair.

The Four Seasons Resort at Anahita is set on a vast lagoon sheltered by coral reef barriers. All the villas feature a private plunge pool and are brimming with state of the art comforts, so it’s a pretty awesome place. There are lots of dining options but we think teens will particularly love Bamboo, it’s right on the beach near all the action at the boat house and guests are spoilt for choice. For keen golfers, there’s an 18-hole championship course designed by Ernie Els, there are also two Astro Turf Wimbledon inspired tennis courts, a state of the art fitness centre and the watersports centre with a huge range of activities, including water skiing, snorkelling, kayaking, windsurfing and Hobie Cat sailing. For teenagers aged 13 and above, Karokan offers a relaxing hangout away from ‘the parents’! Namibia is a real adventure playground and the perfect destination for an active family adventure. Teens will love the different opportunities to explore the wide open spaces, rust-red deserts and rugged landscapes, from quad biking along river deltas, sand-boarding down huge dunes, kayaking alongside a seal colony and tracking rhino. Other highlights include staying on the Skeleton Coast, exploring shipwrecks, spotting desert-adapted wildlife nearby, watching herds of elephant and zebra congregating at waterholes in Etosha and visiting a cheetah conservation project. With a 4x4 vehicle, you can self-drive around the country, allowing you to set the pace of your adventure and giving a real sense of exploring independently (without any of the hassle – we’ll of course provide detailed directions, maps and back-up in case you get lost!). THE SCOOP

Jackson Hole may be top of Mum and Dad’s ski bucket-list for obvious reasons - record-breaking snowfall and fabulous steep terrain, but there’s a whole heap of cool stuff that will cut it from a teen perspective as well. For action on the slopes, the Fall Line Camps pitch themselves to teenagers who dream big and know they need to start small to get there. From rip turns to dropping cliffs, teens will get their mountain kicks at every turn. Wintery fun in Jackson Hole isn’t just about the skiing - there’s plenty of action away from the slopes too. We recommend taking a break from ripping up the pistes to spend time exploring more of what Jackson Hole has to offer. One of the most rewarding and fun things to do as a family is a Winter Wildlife Safari taking in the National Elk Refuge and Grand Teton National Park with everyone vying to spot wintering elk, bison, deer, moose, fox, coyote and if you’re really lucky, wolves. This is a half day trip crammed full of wildlife in the ‘Serengeti of North America’ with a guide who really knows his stuff.

Chamonix’s pulse beats as strong through the summer as it does in the winter - although the vibe is quite different in the summer. This Alpine town is buzzing with adrenaline seekers - you can get your kicks up high on the Alpine summits, down low in the adventure park, on the water or in the trees - there’s really so much to choose from. Nestling at the foot of Europe’s highest peak Mont Blanc, Chamonix is a mecca for activities and will keep sporty families on the go, pretty much from dawn ‘til dusk. Adventures for teens include canyoning, climbing, rafting and Via Ferrata (rock climbing along a steel cable), with a trip to the adventure park thrown in for good measure.
