Variations

Concerts by Candlelight Britten Variations on a Theme of Frank BridgeBach Goldberg Variations (arr. Sitkovetsky)

Bach’s Goldberg Variations still have the power to enthrall audiences. The ancient and simple concept of variations is woven into an epic narrative, where earthly rhythms reach out towards the spiritual dimension. This magical journey is a key reference for all composers, including Britten, whose international reputation was launched by his set of variations for string orchestra.

Sometimes music gets into your head, and it just goes round and round...this can be uplifting, or maddening, or both! Our programme is a collection of such musical ‘earworms’ from across the ages - we guarantee you’ll still be humming them on your way home.

Welcome! Throughout the season, we’ll be celebrating the centenary of one of my favourite composers: Benjamin Britten. Every concert in this season will feature a work by Britten alongside music written by the composers that inspired him: Mozart, Bach, Purcell and Schumann. We’ve also commissioned Scottish composer Martin Suckling to write a series of musical postcards which will feature across the season.

As ever, we’ll be joined by some fantastic soloists this year: trumpeter Alison Balsom will be joining us on a tour of the USA, while Glaswegian tenor Thomas Walkerwill be performing Britten’s Les Illuminations

with specially created visuals by video artist Netia Jones. We’ll also be getting out of the concert hall in Dundee, Inverness, Aberdeen and Perth getting to know you and your communities a little better with our Scottish Ensemble Residencies. Check out our website for more details of what’s happening near you during our 12-13 season. I look forward to meeting lots of you at the concerts, dances, film screenings, family events and late-night gigs we’re giving this year – come along and have some fun with the Scottish Ensemble!
