UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN.
The University of Aberdeen grants four degrees inMedicine and Surgery-viz., M.D., Ch.M., M.B., andCh.B. The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)is also granted in the Faculty of Medicine.
Degrees of M.B. and Ch.B.-Candidates, beforeentering on the curriculum, must have passed thePreliminary Examination or hold a qualificationrecognised as exempting from such examination.The curriculum for the degrees extends over a
period of five years, during which attendance is
required in the following subjects : Biology, Physics,Chemistry (Systematic and Practical), Anatomy(Systematic and Practical), Physiology (Systematic,and Practical), Materia Medica and Therapeutics,Practical Pharmacy, Pathology (Systematic andPractical), Forensic Medicine, Public Health, Surgery,Medicine, and Midwifery.
Candidates must attend for at least three years themedical and surgical practice of a recognised hospital,they must have attended courses of at least ninemonths in clinical medicine and clinical surgery,and have acted as clerk in the medical and dresser inthe surgical wards of a hospital. Attendance is
required on the practice of a dispensary or the out-practice of a hospital and also on courses in MentalDiseases, Fevers, Ophthalmology, Post-mortem Exami-nations, Venereal Diseases, Tuberculosis, Radiology,X Ray, Therapeutics and, Electrical Treatment, andClinical Chemistry, and other special subjects. The
candidate is also required to have been properlyinstructed in Vaccination and to have attended atleast 20 Midwifery cases.
Degrees of M.D. and Ch.M.-Candidates for eitherof these degrees must already hold the degrees ofM.B. and Ch.B. of Aberdeen. A thesis (in duplicate)has to be presented and an examination has to bepassed in Clinical Medicine (or in some specialDepartment of Medical Science) or Clinical Surgery,as the case may be.
Degree of Ph.D.-For this degree candidatesmust pursue a course of special study or researchduring a period of nine academical terms as ResearchStudents in the University of Aberdeen or in any’College or Institution that may be affiliated thereto.A Thesis (in duplicate) must be presented for
approval.A diploma in Public Health is granted by the
University to graduates in Medicine of a Universityin the United Kingdom, after a special examination.
Scholarships and Prizes.-In the Faculty of Medicineof the University of Aberdeen there are the followingBursaries, Scholarships, and Prizes :-Bursaries:about 24 Bursaries (competition and presentation).are open each year, of 210 to J645 per annum in value,most of them being tenable for three years. Scholar-ships : five Post-graduate Scholarships, ranging invalue up to .6250 per annum. Prizes and Medals:15 Gold Medals and Prizes for proficiency in specialdepartments.
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.There are 366 beds. The main clinical work of the
.students is done in the infirmary with its general andspecial facilities, including a Department of ClinicalChemistry.Aberdeen Royal Mental Hospital.
This hospital contains about 900 beds. The classof Mental Diseases meets at the University of Aberdeen,and clinical instruction is given at the hospital duringthree months in summer. Physician-Superintendent,Dr. R. Dods Brown.
,Other Hospitals.Students have the opportunity of attending the
following institutions: City Fever Hospital, SickChildren’s Hospital, General Dispensary, Lying-inand Vaccine Institutions, and the Ophthalmicinstitution.

GRANTING DIPLOMAS.
CONJOINT EXAMINING BOARD.
The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh,the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, andthe Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons ofGlasgow have made arrangements by which, afterone series of examinations, held in Edinburgh or
Glasgow, or both, the student may obtain the diplomasof the three bodies. This is the Scottish Conjoint Board.The three bodies grant their Single Licences onlyto candidates who already possess legal qualificationsin Medicine or Surgery.The hospitals which are recognised by the Scottish
Conjoint Board as places where professional study fortheir diplomas can be pursued are all those institutionswhich feed the medical faculties of the universities,as well as all the places which are recognised bythe English and Irish Conjoint Boards.
Professional Education.-The candidate must pro-duce certificates or other satisfactory evidence ofhaving attended the following separate and distinctcourses of instruction: Physics, three months -.Elementary Biology, 2 terms ; Elementary Inorganicand Organic Chemistry, 2 terms ; Anatomy, PracticalAnatomy, 5 terms ; Theoretical including Biochemistryand Biophysics, 5 terms ; Physiology, Materia Medica,2 terms ; Pathology (including Practical Pathology),3 terms ; Practice of Medicine, 2 terms ; ClinicalMedicine, 3 terms ; Principles and Practice of Sur-gery, 2 terms ; Clinical Surgery, 3 terms ; Midwiferyand Gynaecology, 2 terms; Diseases of Children,one term ; Medical Jurisprudence, one term ; andPublic Health, one term. The certified attendance onlectures, demonstrations, and practical work must notbe less than three-fourths of the total number ofroll-calls. Every student undergoes a course ofPractical Midwifery, but before attending at labourshe is required to attend a course of lectures on Surgeryand Midwifery and to hold the offices of ClinicalMedical Clerk and Surgical Dresser. He must alsoattend for two and a half months’ instruction inPractical Pharmacy ; the certificate to be signed bythe teacher, who must be a member of thePharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, or thesuperintendent of the laboratory of a public hospitalor dispensary, or a registered practitioner who dis-penses medicines to his patients, or a teacher ofPractical Pharmacy.The student must attend for 27 months the Medical
and Surgical practice of a public general hospitalcontaining on an average at least 80 patients availablefor clinical instruction and possessing distinct staffs ofphysicians and of surgeons. He must act as SurgicalDresser and Medical Clinical Clerk for not less thannine months in the wards in each case, and receivepractical instruction in administration of anaesthetics.He must attend for three months the practice of apublic dispensary especially recognised by any of theabove authorities, and three months’ attendance atthe out-patient department of a recognised generalhospital. This attendance should be made afterthe student has passed the First and Secondexaminations.Candidates are also required to attend the following
three-monthly courses : Diseases and Injuries of theEye ; Insanity; Infectious Diseases; Gynaecology ;Diseases of Children. The curriculum lasts for fiveyears, the fifth year being devoted to clinical work.
There are four professional examinations :-First Examination includes Systematic and Prac-
tical Biology. Chemistry and Physics.The Second Examination must be Written, Practical,
and Oral, and consist of the following subjects :-(1) Anatomy and Embryology, and (2) Physiology,including Histology (if not included in Anatomy),

Biochemistry, and Biophysics. Candidates may beadmitted to this Examination on production of thenecessary certificates of curriculum. ,
The Third Examination must be Written, Practicaland Oral, and consist of the following subjects :-(1) Pathology, including Bacteriology and MorbidAnatomy, and (2) Pharmacology (Theoretical andPractical), including Pharmacological Chemistry, thePrinciples of Therapeutics, and Prescription Writing.Candidates may be admitted to this Examinationon production of the necessary certificates of ’,curriculum. ’
The Final Examination must consist of the follow-ing subjectsl :-(1) Medicine, including Therapeutics.Applied Anatomy and Physiology, and ClinicalPathology with Practical Medicine; (2) Surgery,including Applied Anatomy and Physiology, ClinicalPathology, with Practical Surgery; (3) Midwiferyand Diseases of Women, Clinical Obstetrics andGynaecology, with Practical Midwifery; and (4)Medical Jurisprudence and Public Health. Medicine,Surgery, and Midwifery must be taken together, andMedical Jurisprudence and Public Health, and notearlier than on the conclusion of five Winters and fiveSummers of Medical Study, provided that a periodof 36 months has elapséd since passing the SecondProfessional Examination. The Schedule for theFinal Examination must contain a summary of theentire Course of Study, and, properly attested or
proved by Certificates, must be lodged with theInspector, and the fee paid, not later than one weekbefore the examination. At the same time theremust be produced a Certificate to show that theCandidate is not less than 21 years of age. NoCandidate can be exempted from examination onany subject of the Final Examination (with theexception of Medical Jurisprudence and PublicHealth) unless he has already passed in the subjectat this Board.
In addition to the Written and Oral Examinationsall Candidates must be subjected to Clinical Examina-tions in Medicine, Surgery, and Midwifery andGynascology, which shall include the Examination ofPatients, Physical Diagnosis, the Clinical use of theMicroscope and of other instruments, ClinicalChemistry, Surgical Appliances, Bandaging, Surfacemarkings, Skiagrams, &c. The Oral Examinationinclude the recognition of specimens. All Candidatesfor the Final Examination must complete the threeportions (Medicine, Surgery, and Midwifery) withina period of 19 months.

School of Medicine of the Royal Colleges, Edinburgh.The Lectures in this School qualify for gradua-
tion at Edinburgh and other Universities, forthe Examinations of the Conjoint Boards ofEdinburgh and Glasgow, London, and Dublin. Thenumber of students attending varies from year toyear, and for the past few years the average numberhas been about 600. In accordance with the Statutesof the University of Edinburgh one half of thequalifying classes required for graduation there maybe attended in this School, the fees paid for suchclasses being the same as those for the correspondingUniversity classes. Special classes of instruction forDental students are included in the curriculum. Post-graduate courses are conducted in conjunction withthe University. Further particulars regarding the

grants a Membership and a Fellowship.i - eMt6e7’sMp.—A candidate, who must be a Licen-tiate of a British or Irish College of Physicians, or agraduate in medicine of a University, approved bythe Council, and 24 years of age, is examined inmedicine, therapeutics, and in any branch of thedepartments of medicine specially professed, suchas general pathology, psychology, public health,obstetrics, gynaecology, diseases of children, tropicalmedicine, or medical jurisprudence.
Fellowship.-The Fellows are selected from theranks of the Members.

ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS OFI EDINBURGH.
The Royal Uollege of burgeons of Edinburghadmits to the examination for its Single Licence anycandidates who hold a Diploma in Medicine of anyBritish, Indian, or Foreign university or of anyBritish College of Physicians, or of the Society ofApothecaries of London or Apothecaries’ Hall,Dublin, granted under the provisions of the MedicalAct, 1886, whose preliminary examination and courseof professional study is proved to be sufficient tofulfil the requirements of the College, or to thosewho have passed a full examination for any ofthe above. Female practitioners are admitted tothe Licence of the College and also to the Fellow-ship, and the regulations apply to practitioners ofeither sex.
The College grants a diploma of Fellowship afterexamination to the holders of British surgical degreesor diplomas and the holders of recognised degreesof the Universities of Canada, Australia, and NewZealand.
The Hoto<np.—Candidates must be 25 years ofage and in practice for at least two years. Theexamination is written and viva voce, and includessurgery and surgical anatomy, operative surgery,and clinical practice. One optional subject mustalso be taken, the range of these specialisms coveringnearly every branch of medicine. Candidates arenot allowed to appear for more than three times atthe examinations. One month’s notice of intentionto appear for examination must be given by thecandidate to the College.
ROYAL FACULTY OF PHYSICIANS AND
SURGEONS OF GLASGOW.
The Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons ofGlasgow grants a Fellowship and a Licence to beheld separately. The Licence is granted as a separatequalification to qualified practitioners in Medicineafter examination in surgery, including surgicalanatomy and clinical surgery.Fellowship.-The Fellowship of the Faculty is
granted after examination in medicine or surgery,together with an optional subject, which may beanatomy or physiology, or be selected from any specialbranch of medicine or surgery. Fourteen days’ noticemust be given by the candidate to the Faculty.In certain circumstances Fellows may be elected as amark of distinction.
