SCOTTISH SOCIETY OF ARCHITECT ARTISTS

1987 - 2012ligne et couleur

The Scottish Society of Architect Artists was founded in 1987 by architects interested in the visual arts beyond their first discipline, including: – drawing, painting, sculpture, jewellery, photography,

print-making and experimental art.

The Society is a registered charity and was originally affiliated to the London based Society of Architect Artists, which was founded in 1964 but is now dormant. SSAA is an Associated Society of the Royal Incor-

poration of Architects in Scotland although entirely independent of RIAS. The Society is also Associated with Ligne et Couleur and enjoys

strong reciprocal arrangements with counterparts in France (Paris); Germany (Stuttgart); Italy (Associazione Architetti Artisti - Venice &

Verona) and Poland (SARP Warsaw).

The SSAA is committed to holding an annual exhibition of member’s works, which generally alternates between Glasgow and Edinburgh

but has also included among others, the Lillie Gallery Milngavie, the Smith Art Gallery & Museum Stirling, and the Maclaurin Galler-

ies Ayr. A guest artist is invited to exhibit a number of works and to take part in the selection and hanging of member’s submissions. The opening of the annual exhibition is usually followed by a ‘vernissage’

at which members can meet and be introduced to visiting representa-tives from the other European societies.

Membership of the Scottish Society of Architect Artists is open to architects, students, and to persons involved in architectural practice in Scotland, past and present. A recent Rule change also now permits

ex-patriots to become members of the Society.

The title 'Architect' is generally well understood, tightly controlled, and even regulated by act of parlia-ment in UK. 'Artist' by contrast can seem relatively unrestricted, almost boundless, free spirited and rich with possibilities.

Throughout history, architects were artists - and art-ists often became architects. Both recorded details of contemporary society. They commented on key influ-ences -religion, politics or power,- and effectively be-came curators of our cultural history. Both disciplines traditionally share ambitions to create and communi-cate ideas. Both appreciate and have developed visual, mental and manual skills. Both even now explore new fangled computer techniques, for drawing, painting and modelling to aid understanding of 2d and 3d concepts. Each discipline works with texture, colour, materials, light and form to manipulate senses in others who use, view or experience their work.

Yet as society embraces and celebrates science and technology, and the resulting sharper financial and accounting focus leads to more litigious relationships, art can sometimes seemed to be squeezed out of architecture. The merit of proportion or of juxtaposi-tion can be hard to champion in a 21st century joust where the value of investment, capital cost or future flexibility is more tangible - and may now even be quantifiable.

With the science and technology revolution has come an apparent wider professional taste for obfuscation and sophism. Where aesthetic sensitivities are dis-

cussed complex language now ensures that only those with fulsome training are comfortable in the debate. In art, ‘Allegory’ or ‘Symbolism’ requires education for any commentator to adequately analyse artists’ motives, values and ambitions. Likewise architecture now requires seven years of formal education to gain the skills to mediate aesthetic judgements, building science requirements, economic stringencies and political planning issues.

Yet among those outwith the arts and architecture professions, well proportioned buildings, - taste-ful textures and colours, - or well balanced public spaces, are still generally loved and appreciated by a wider public. Otherwise how can we explain World Heritage Sites, and why tourists continue to flock to Edinburgh or Rome, rather than perhaps other vigorous and successful commercial centres such as Livingston or Milton Keynes. This aesthetic under-standing appears to be key to why many architects maintain their interest and enthusiastic participation in visual arts activities throughout their lives.

Originally the Grand Tour served as education in the arts. It exposed aspiring young talents to a rich history of musical, artistic and architectural achieve-ment around Europe. Most of all it encouraged understanding and communication between all the arts disciplines. Ironically as travel becomes easier and even cheaper the Grand Tour has disappeared replaced by package holidays, or Gap years, - equally stimulating cultural experiences? Possibly, but not certainly!

ARCHITECT ARTISTS,

..WHO? ...WHAT? ...WHY?

As the Scottish Society of Architect Artists ( SSAA ) celebrates it’s 25th anniversary Ian Stuart Campbell, HonFRIAS, considers the raison d’etre and also some ambiguities within the title ‘architect artist’.

08

Page 9: SCOTTISH SOCIETY OF ARCHITECT ARTISTS ligne et couleur ...edinburgh-sketching-club.com/inkscapes/ssaa_booklet_edi2a.pdf2011 Charles Jamieson, MFA PAI PPAI 2012 David Martin SCOTTISH

In an effort to reinforce meaningful links between art and architecture ‘architect artists’ have formed into societies. In 1935 "Ligne and Couleur" established in France. This organisation grew out of an even earlier arts and crafts group (1881) who had exhibited under a more ambiguous name 'lovers of nature'. They produced regular exhibitions until 1914 when the first world war put an end to such activities.

Reconstituted as "Ligne et Couleur" they held their next exhibition in 1936 at the Galerie Charpentier in Paris. Again war disrupted their annual programme until 1946 when their ninth exhibition was held in Galerie Fontan, 137 Boulevard Saint Germain. This event reportedly marked a substantial increase in enthusiasm, numbers and quality of exhibitors. In 1958 a sister society formed in Germany, and since then others have evolved in Poland, Italy, and Romania.

In 1987 The Scottish Society of Architect Artists, SSAA was formed with modest aims and objectives:

1) encourage architects to develop their skills in paint-ing, sculpture, and related arts and crafts, and 2) to provide opportunities to exhibit and sell their work. Edinburgh architect Hamish Haswell-Smith had joined the Society of Architect-Artists in 1985 but this was so essentially London-centric that two years later he gathered together a small group of like-minded Scot-tish architects and founded the SSAA with the Duke of Gloucester as royal patron.

The Society continues to exhibit, communicate and develop artistic liaisons. Regular “paint and Pint” days have proved sociable, accessible and popular. Life

classes run in conjunction with the Leith School of Art, have expanded the subject choices and techniques among certain Scottish members. Likewise an active and developing reciprocity with the societies in France, Italy, Germany and Poland widens our cultural hori-zons and exposes Scots architect artists to some quite playful and flamboyant influences.

As a result the SSAA Exhibitions now seem more colourful and enjoyable than ever. Architects may sometimes seem reluctant to let their hair down, but when it brings a smile to their faces, it must surely be worthwhile?

I joined the Society after I got a circular letter from Hamish Haswell-Smith. We first exhibited at the McLellan Galleries Glasgow, in 1988. Like many architects I didn't know what to expect -was I good enough? I was pleasantly surprised to see that the sub-missions were good, and the Exhibition first class. Our submissions stood up well beside those from London. (from the already established Society of Architect Artists)

I got a letter from the Society and from memory this was the notification of an AGM. It made no mention of SSAA but only Ligne et Couleur. I was a nationalist (not a political one) and wrote to Hamish saying that we were a Scottish Society and should not be appar-ently a French Society - he wrote back and put me straight!

When the AGM hoved in sight, Nan my wife, said after all my interference that I had better get to the AGM - I quickly was on the Committee! Soon after I assisted Iain McLachlan with exhibitions until Ian became ill in 1991 - I then followed him.

The catalogue covers were designed specifically for each annual exhibition. The ones produced by Iain McLachlin, I think are great. He did them all from 1989 until 1995, and all are very interesting. From memory in 1990 we should have had our Exhi-bition in the House for An Art Lover on its comple-tion. We were given various dates but nothing fixed.

Time was going on and the Committee was anxious. I visited the site and found it very quiet and nowhere was it near completion. No exhibition that year!

In 1992 the Duke of Gloucester opened the Exhibition in the Black and White Room at the RSA. This was possibly the most successful exhibition from the point of sales. However the security arrangements were severe, guests being vetted and Spike the sniffer dog in every nook and cranny.

Dear Jack Notman was always late with his submis-sions. A phone call usually late at night on the day of the hand-in would come to see what arrangements could be made. Eventually space was always left for him. However he would rearrange the surrounding picture to ensure his had the most prominence. It did not always work out.

At the Christmas show two of Donald Webster's pictures were sold to one person who admitted that he had forgotten his cheque book. He made a small pay-ment and agreed installments. The first two payments were made and then silence! I remember that at least six months passed before another was made.

The chap had taken ill and was in hospital, with his wife knowing nothing of the pictures. He was keeping it quiet. The pictures were for his own collection and she was to know nothing about them.

All turns out well in the end.

Stewart Hume, one of the group of founding members of the Scottish Society of Architect Artists, shares some recollections and reminds us of early discussions about name and identity.

THE EARLY DAYS

“It could be said that an architect must be an artist, an engineer, a planner, a psychologist and an accountant - all rolled into one professional being. It would be an incompatible mix if it were not for a sense of balance.”

Hamish Haswell-Smith is an accomplished architect artist who has exhibited in the Royal Scottish Academy; The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour; and held one-man shows in Edinburgh, Dunkeld and Glasgow. In 1985 he joined the Society of Architect-Artists but this proved so London-centric that two years later he gathered a group of like-minded Scottish architects and founded the Scottish Society of Architect Artists with HRH Duke of Gloucester as patron.

Hamish’s enthusiasm for sailing inspired him to write his best-selling book, ‘The Scottish Islands’ which was illustrated with his own drawings, paintings and maps. This was followed by ‘An Island Odyssey’ and several commissions for book illustrations -including ‘The illustrated Vital Spark’. He regularly contributed illustrated west coast articles which were published in Scottish Newspapers.

Haswell-Smith was President of the Scottish Arts Club in 1982-84 and President of the Scottish Society of Architect-Artists from 1987 to 1990. Hamish continues to exhibit regularly in all the SSAA Exhibitions.

A selection of works by SSAA Members representing the variety of subjects, techniques and media used over the last 25 years has been included here as a Gallery. Some of these images have been reproduced from pho-tographs, prints and random other sources as many were submitted for exhibitions in years before JPGs were available. The Society now invites members to submit digital copies for use in connection with the SSAA and its web site, newsletters and gallery at <www.ssaagallery.org.uk> and also where possible to allow catalogues to be prepared.

SSAA PARTICIPATION with ‘LIGNE ET COULEUR’SSAA members are invited to submit works to European architect artist events in Italy, France, Germany, and Poland. In Paris the annual exhibition is usually held in a splendid civic location and attracts an enthusiastic crowd to their-previews. (above: Paris, march 2011) Recent architect artist events in Italy have been held in a restored art centre in Verona. Support from local municipal authorities and the university ensures a high quality exhibition and substantial local interest and involvement. Catalogue covers for SSAA Annual Exhibitions

The first cover featured Jack Notman’s interpretation of Ligne et Couleur’s brush logo, with the SSAA Ionic Capital. The covers from 1989 to 1996 were individually designed by Iain McLachlan and admired by many. The care and attention in preparing the covers was continued by M Stewart Hume who retains a comprehensive archive of covers.

2008

A variety of formats for the catalogues were tried from A4 booklet, A3 folders and for recent years the SSAA has experimented with catalogues created and accessed on line as PDF documents.

SSAA WORKSHOP, Leith School of Art

LIFE DRAWING CLASSThe first Workshop of the SSAA anniversary year was held at Leith School of Art under the expert guidance of Kenneth Le Riche on February 26th 2012. A cheerful baker’s dozen filled the studio prompt on Sunday at 9.30am to learn by experiment about monotype and trace monotype printing from life drawings.

An illustrated introductory talk set the bar quite high by showing images by Degas, Pissarro and Carriere who each achieved a remarkable subtlety of light and variation of tone. Such an inky medium demands skilful technique and required protective gloves and aprons to avoid unwelcome marks. Total involvement in the process meant that for most a very full day programme resulted in four or five A1 monochrome im-ages of our excellent model, Andra.

Appraisal of each completed print - displayed on the floor - was helpful in relaxing the artists and encouraging bolder and more experimental works throughout the day. It was a very enjoyable and successful event which is bound to lead to further demand for more workshops of this type and more collaborations with the Leith School of Art.

SSAA - XPa new initiative aims to maintain contact with SSAA ex-patriates.Many members of the Scottish Society of Architect Artists have had experiences of working abroad at some stage in their career. The export of experts from Scotland continues today as fluctuations in politics and economics create opportunities away from home.

SSAA Secretary, Bob Anderson and his wife Ann went to work in Rhodesia in 1965, and moved to Zambia where Bob was site architect on the Zambia National Assembly building. They returned to UK in 1975 and have since been based in Edinburgh.

Bob’s experiences of working abroad led him to promote and now establish a new grade of membership for ex-patriates, SSAA-XP. This offers former members now based away from home - whether in Ireland, Warsaw, or Australia - the opportunity to continue to exhibit with the Society and to keep in touch through e-Newsletters, the web site and the SSAA’s new interactive presences, - including Facebook.

This being the 25th Anniversary of the SSAA, now seems like an appropriate time to propose that XP members can send one print of an original work to the main 2012 exhibitions in Edinburgh and Glasgow. SSAA will undertake to mount these works and there will be no hanging fee. Unsold works however will not be returnable. A number of potential members have expressed interest in joining this grade and it will be interesting to see how strongly this aspect of the Society flourishes.

The SSAA aims to reinforce close relationships between art and architecture, by providing opportunities to display and sell artworks by members. The ambition is to encourage architects to continue developing their skills in visual arts beyond architecture – drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, print-making and experimental art.

Many architects were trained in schools of architecture associated with art colleges throughout Scotland, and the Society aims to offer opportunities to continue an art based social and educational environment by organising ‘Paint and Pint days’, exhibitions and awards, occasional tutored study courses and/or life classes generally organised in association with the Leith School of Art.

The SSAA also maintains strong links with other European societies of architect artists. Through an asso-ciation with Ligne et Couleur, SSAA Members are invited to submit works to annual exhibitions in France, Italy, Poland and Germany and in turn European architect artists regularly participate and exhibit in the Scottish events.
