State College Blvd. Anaheim, CA 92806 www.southcoastplumeriasociety.club September 2018 President’s Corner I would like to thank each and every one of our members for attending the flower show, and for bringing out your best blooms and entering them. There were so many beautiful blooms, and so many fragrant ones. Congratulations to all of the winners, and a big thank you to everyone who participated. Our flower show was a huge success and I could see in everyone’s face that the Aloha was flowing. There were so many smiles around the room, and that made it an extra special day. A special thanks to Diem Nguyen and his group of volunteers for putting together and overseeing the flower show. Your hard work and dedication made our meeting one of the best. Thank you again.

Members – Guests - New Members It was nice to see so many people attend the August meeting. As I walked around the room and talked to some of the people, I was surprised to find so many who were attending for the first time. I felt it was important to acknowledge them in a positive way, and show them that we appreciated their visit. We even had a few who signed up or said they will be coming back. A special thanks to Mei B. Sato for greeting and interacting with all attendees. And special thanks to John Tarvin for providing seeds, and giving our members and guests a little something extra. Committee Chairs and Volunteers Where would the society be without you? Can you imagine if James and Roxanne Munoz could not do the members’ raffle and the AV? It would not be the same meeting. Thank you Munoz Ohana for all you do to make our meetings so enjoyable. Thank you Mike Fry and Lee Spacht, and many of the other helpers that helped set up and break down the meeting, making Leeann Montgomery’s job a little easier. Thank you to Mike Fry for volunteering your truck to help us move things back to storage. Gia - you did a great job with the store. There are SO many I have to thank for making our meetings run smoother. Photographer Thank you Wilma Wilson for taking the time to take pictures and add them to our newsletter - it is greatly appreciated.

Plant Sellers, Plumeria Art and Craft Vendors Plant Sellers - thank you for taking the time to load your plants up and bring them to our meetings. It gives our members and guests a chance to purchase the plants they are looking for. Plumeria Art and Craft vendors - I saw a lot of your work and it was beautiful! Thank you for bringing it to our meetings and sharing it with our community. Thank you Manuel Rivas for taking on this challenging position - you ran it well, and we thank you for that.

Elections The board elections will take place during the meeting in September. I encourage everybody who qualifies for these positions to consider running to bring new ideas to the South Coast Plumeria Society. Board Members, Advisors The board members and advisors have played an important role for our Society. The work they have done this year has kept us on the path and with the vision that the founding members had hoped for. It has been a pleasure to be part of this team.

Plumeria Store/New T-Shirts You may have caught a glimpse of the new t-shirt design at the Flower Show. Congratulations to Sandra Cotter who created the designs for both the t-shirts and the new window clings. Both items will be available for purchase at the next meeting. Last call y’all! September will be the last chance for you to pick up the plants you’ve been wanting. Diem, Irene and Ou Te will be offering their last plants of the year. They told me they saved the best for last! Lernie Buehler will be indoors ready to give you a henna tattoo, or you can pick up one of her handmade plumeria rings or candle holders. Mahalo, Manny Plumeria Day at the L.A. Arboretum The L.A. Arboretum hosted their 4th annual Plumeria Day on July 28, and the South Coast Plumeria Society and many of our members were there! The star of the event was the plumeria grove, which boasts over 100 trees. There were tours of the grove, workshops, and vendors that all contributed to a successful event. The SCPS had an information booth at the event and signed up several new members. Many thanks go to Adrienne Libman who helped at the booth, and Mei Sato who helped with the free raffle. Although this was not an SCPS sponsored event, many of our members helped make it happen. Diana Donnellan helped organize the event and the volunteers, many of whom are SCPS members. They maintain the plumeria grove throughout the year. On Plumeria Day, they gave tours of the plumeria grove, helped with set up, and took pictures. Some of our members who volunteered were Phil Kinoshita, Mei Sato, Philip Wong, Lee Spacht, Stephanie Clayton, Lali O’Connor, Linda Ohara,

MaryAnn Burns, Mike Atkinson and Rodney Esteban. Several of the vendors at the event were also SCPS members including David Konishi, Georgia Caverly, Pam Murphy, Ellen Panaro, Erik Jordan, Eleazar Luna, Ou Te, Brendon Dorish, Richard Gallegos, and Joyce Biondolillo. It was a great event, despite the heat! The L.A. Arboretum, which is located in Arcadia, has wonderful gardens and beautiful peacocks roaming the grounds. If you missed the event, you can still visit the arboretum and the plumeria grove, which is in full bloom. Mahalo, Jaki Snacks for Meetings A thru M - it’s your turn for the September Meeting Thank you to all who helped with the hospitality set-up at the August Meeting. Your help was greatly appreciated.
