GIVE LIGHT AND THE PEOPLEWILL FIND THEIR OWN WAY.”This is the motto of the Scripps Howard Foundation, and it has been the

guiding inspiration of Hampton University’s Scripps Howard School of

Journalism and Communications since its inception in 2002. Since 1967, the

university has prepared students for careers in media, and the more recent

support of the Scripps Howard Foundation has helped to create a special

environment that produces ethical and competitive leaders who learn to

pursue excellence and innovation in digital media, while also gaining

an extraordinary understanding of the core principles of journalism and

communications.

A TRADITION OF DISTINCTIONLocated on a waterfront campus of 270 acres at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, Hampton University is a nearly 150-year-old historically black institution with about 5,000 students. With the proper academic focus and professional guidance, the approximately 400 students enrolled in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications are helping to create the future of journalism and communications and better enabling media companies to continue to prosper.

All across Hampton University’s breathtakingly beautiful campus, students, faculty, and administrators continue to enrich the institution’s reputation and prestige through scholarly research, achievement, and industry innovation. Notable recent advances include:

• a $13 million Minority Men’s Health Initiative, dedicated to studying and researching health disparities among African-American men

• a Center for Innovation in Digital Media, housed inside the Scripps Howard School and funded by the Knight Foundation

• the development and operation of a $225 million proton beam cancer treatment facility, the largest of its kind in the United States

• commanding a NASA satellite mission and grant in excess of $150 million, to study polar stratospheric and mesospheric clouds

• a business and financial journalism newsroom, featuring one of the few Bloomberg terminals found inside of the nation’s journalism schools

PURSUETHE FUTURE

14

A TRULY ADVANCED DEGREEAmong the ongoing enhancements to the curriculum at the Scripps Howard School is a new focus on business journalism and communications, complete with a financial newsroom, news data and stock ticker. And now, thanks to a generous grant from the Knight Foundation, we have begun our first foray into the world of digital media research and entrepreneurship with the launch of our Center for Innovation in Digital Media.

While focusing on the advancements of our facilities, we are also maintaining our rigorous standards. We have recently been reaccredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. It’s a fresh stamp of approval from the global standard bearer in journalism education.
