Script is an aid to signify something in a visual way.Its origin lies in a religious and magic area.The first script and its signs were written on 3 dimensional objects which had a function in religious or magic rituals.
PEPTOMICS INVERTS THE EVOLUTION OF SCRIPT
Proteins are not only the building blocks from which cells are built; they also execute nearly all cell functions. Proteins are defined by an alphabetic code string of Amino Acids.
The alphabetic protein notations in modern science with their specific biological functions are converted in artistic, magic signs.
The inversion of a scientific nomenclature in the „magic“ area of art results in various artistic results:We can see, touch and digest words and terms with their origin in proteins.
The artistic act of converting proteins is always connected to the scientific specifications. The combination of signs from A-Z is not arbitrary. The magic of the artistic outputs results from their strict connection to the scientific parameters.
Until now, proteins only had a biological function.
By defining them as a medium/vehicle of language they gain also a cultural value.
To visualize and communicate the cultural value of proteins as a medium containing words is the main motivation of the peptomics project.

Peptomics is an interdisciplinary project. It combines the area of molecular biology and an artistic approach based on semiotics and the history of visualisation and cultural function of script.
Peptomics has developed a method to extract words out of proteins.
The purpose of the project and its artistic results are unique and can only be realized through the scientific method of the project developed so far.
The basis of the project is the fact that proteins in cells are defined by a sequence of letters.
Each letter represents one amino acid in a protein.Proteins can be found in virus and cells of all living organisms, from microbes to mammals: bacteria, humans, plants, fungi.
Only since 2008 all letters of the alpabet from A-Z are represented in proteins (see glossary of amino acids below).
The project team has developed a unique method, which extracts letter combinations from proteins. We are not only putting the amino acids representing letters next to each other to create a word. Peptomics detects the amino acid chain of a word in a protein that really exists.
Every imaginable combination of letters (and consequently every existing word) can be located, extracted, defined and visualized.

The project name PEPTOMICS is composed of the word PEPTIDE (from the Greek „small digestible“), which is a small chain of amino acids, that can be part of a protein and the neologism „OMICS“ which informally refers to a field of study in biology ending in - omics. Proteins are present in every living cell and possess a variety of biochemical activities.
The main focus of -omics is on finding interaction and relationships among the objects.
Peptomics finds relationships between words and biological systems.

The project team (Johannes Blank as artist and scientist Dr. Shaila Rössle) conduct doing research activities on the Peptomics Bio-Art project since 2007.
We work exclusively digital until now and use several molecular modelling and 3D-graphic software and online databases (www.pdb.org) for the project.
Only a few scientists worldwide are theoretically able to perform the necessary bioinformatic research steps to find, visualize and define the amino acid chain equivalent of a word.
The molecular modelling of words on the basis of proteins that really exist has never been done before.
In comparison to other bio art projects that deal with language coding/decoding, peptomics has developed a unique scientific method to create a 3D script system which has its own artistic beauty.
The system refers directly to the scientific 3D structure of the protein.

Every protein is defined by a code of letters representing amino acids. Due to the biological behaviour of amino acids in proteins, the extraction of a letter combination gives various artistic relevant results.
According to the early development of script letters (cuneiforms), script itself had a religious/magic function in various religious rituals. Script fixed religious “formulas” on 3D cult objects which were used for religious rituals.
The first script (6000-5000 B.C.) was written on 3D cult objects.
Script/the combination of letters has a cultural value. So do proteins containing words.
Like words in a language transport signals of communication, the amino acid sequence in proteins transport biochemical signals in cells.
By visualizing letter combinations in proteins, Peptomics additionally transfers amino acids into iconic signs of a newly defined sign system.

Peptomics is setting up a 3D environment to visualize the molecular models of words/letter combinations:
CREATION OF A 3D SIGN SYSTEM Based on the atomic position of the amino acids representing the letters from A-Z a 3D sign system with several 3D molecular modelling tools will be produced.

CREATION OF 3D SCRIPT SHAPES
To visualize the 3D appearance of a word in a protein as a sculpture in real space the necessary 3D elements will be developed.
The appearance of a 3D sculpture of a word is based on the atomic position of the amino acids using the 3D sign system created before.
Basic shapes are plotted in 3D to construct every imaginable word as a sculpture out of silicone forms.The shapes are made of epoxy casting resin and are used to produce silicone prototpyes.
3D sculptures of the seven deadly sins are casted in mould.

The protein Database (www.pdb.org) contains structural 3D data of molecules (proteins and nucleic acids) and is freely accessible for scientific research.
Since 2008 each letter of the alphabet has its equivalent in the scientific based presentation of proteins. PEPTOMICS has developed a basic visualisation of each letter representing an amino acid so far.
