At the end of World War II, the Russians were marching German prisoners of war back to Germany. Ordinary Russian people lined the streets by the thousands to see the spectacle. 40 million Russians died as a result of the war. One could not possibly imagine the feelings of these ordinary Russian people as the German soldiers were marched in front of them. A chorus of hatred, heckles and jeers permeated the scene. First came the German officers, relatively well fed, in their uniforms, marching in step, able to keep a semblance of dignity and respect. The Russian people had no problem sustaining their hatred of them. But after a while the vast bulk of prisoners appeared, the ordinary German foot soldiers. They could hardly march at all, let alone in step. They were emaciated, with few clothes, truly humiliated, wretched, gaunt, pitiful creatures. The jeers and abuse stopped. There was a hush over the crowded lines of people. Then a couple of elderly Russian women, broke through the crowd to these ghostly figures and held out crusts of bread. The bread was gratefully and eagerly accepted and soon many other ordinary Russian bystanders were moving amongst the columns of German prisoners with offerings of bread. It became so overwhelming that the Russian guards could not stop the crowd. Somehow, those ordinary Russian people were moved with an unconditional love that revealed to them that their enemies were simply other people’s children who were lost, hungry and needing to go home. (Kim Thoday, Hewett Community Church of Christ, South Australia) We begin the first week of Lent reflecting on a human experience shared by all of us. It was first seen with Adam and Eve, when they decided it was worth the risk to disobey God because they might become more like him. And it continues in each of us, because we all have our moments when we are tempted. We know what God expects, but we do not
want to do that, so we sin by omission. Or we
see something good in someone or some thing that we know is contrary to the will of God, and we choose what we want instead of being true to God and resisting sin. Sometimes in serious ways, other times in small ways, we all feel the pull of temptation in our life. The gospel reminds us that Jesus shared so completely in our human condition that he too experienced serious temptations to turn away from the will of his Father. And we know that he would find himself at the end praying to be spared his terrible death, if possible. But, even in that moment of temptation, his prayer was, “Not my will, but your will be done.” During this first week of Lent, as we reflect on our common experience of temptation to sin, the example of Jesus challenges us. When we have been treated unfairly and we react, what is the will of our Father? When we feel the inspiration to spend some time in prayer, but it is time for our favorite TV program, what is the will of our Father? When it is clear that someone needs our help but we do not want to be bothered, what is the will of our Father? We often want to march along with our head held high as if we were holier than the people around us. But in the end, as we consider that we are surrounded by God’s unconditional love, we have to be serious about all the temptations of life, big and small. We have to admit that we would be lost without Jesus. Jesus did not come to condemn the sinner, but to show us the way to the Father. “Father, not my will, but your will be done.”

Al final de la II Guerra Mundial, los rusos estaban marchando prisioneros de guerra alemanes para regresar a Alemania. Miles de Rusos común salieron a las calles para ver el espectáculo. 40 millones de rusos murieron como consecuencia de la guerra. Uno no podía imaginar los sentimientos de la gente rusa común cuando los soldados alemanes marcharon en frente de ellos. Un coro de odio, insultos y burlas penetraban en la escena. Primero llegaron los oficiales alemanes, relativamente bien alimentados, con sus uniformes, marchando en paso, capaz de mantener una apariencia de dignidad y respeto. El pueblo ruso no tuvo ningún problema en mantener su odio de ellos. Pero después de un rato, el bulto de los prisioneros apareció, los soldados ordinarios de infantería alemana. Difícilmente podrían marchar, mucho menos en paso. Ellos estaban enflaquecidos, con poca ropa, verdaderamente humillado, miserable, demacrado criaturas. La burla y el abuso se detuvo. Hubo un silencio en las líneas llenas de gente. Luego un par mujeres rusas ancianas, rompió a través de la multitud para llegar a estas figuras fantasmales y les ofrecieron cortezas de pan. El pan fue grata y ansiosamente aceptado y pronto muchos otros rusos ordinarios fueron moviendo entre las columnas de prisioneros alemanes con ofrendas de pan. Llegó a ser tan abrumadora que la Federación de guardias no podía detener a la multitud. De alguna manera, los rusos ordinarios fueron mudados con un amor incondicional, que les revelo que sus enemigos eran simplemente hijos de otra gente que estaban perdidos, con hambre y necesitaban regresar a su casa. (Kim Thoday Hewet, Iglesia de Cristo, de la Comunidad de Australia del Sur) Empezamos la primera semana de Cuaresma reflexionando sobre una experiencia humana compartida por todos nosotros. Fue visto por primera vez con Adán y Eva, cuando decidieron que el riesgo valía la pena desobedecer a Dios porque podrían llegar a ser más como Él. Y continúa en cada uno de nosotros, porque todos tenemos nuestros momentos cuando somos tentados. Sabemos lo que Dios espera, pero no queremos hacerlo, así que pecamos por omisión.

O vemos algo bueno en alguien o algo que sabemos que es contraria a la voluntad de Dios, y elegimos lo que queremos, en lugar de ser fiel a Dios y resistir el pecado. A veces en formas graves, otras veces en formas pequeñas, todos sentimos el estiro de la tentación en nuestra vida. El evangelio nos recuerda que Jesús compartió tan completamente en nuestra condición humana que él también experimentó graves tentaciones para alejarlo de la voluntad de su padre. Y sabemos que él se encontró al final rezando para ser librado de su terrible muerte, si era posible. Pero, incluso en ese momento de tentación, su oración fue: "No se haga mi voluntad, sino la tuya". Durante esta primera semana de Cuaresma, mientras reflexionamos sobre nuestra experiencia común de la tentación a pecar, el ejemplo de Jesús nos desafía. Cuando hemos sido tratados injustamente y reaccionamos, ¿cuál es la voluntad de nuestro Padre? Cuando sentimos la inspiración de pasar algún tiempo en oración, pero es hora de nuestro programa favorito de televisión, ¿cuál es la voluntad de nuestro Padre? Cuando es evidente que alguien necesita nuestra ayuda, pero no queremos ser molestados, ¿cuál es la voluntad de nuestro Padre? A menudo queremos marchar adelante con nuestra cabeza en alto como si fuéramos más santos que la gente alrededor de nosotros. Pero al final, cuando consideramos que estamos rodeados por el amor incondicional de Dios, tenemos que ser serios acerca de todas las tentaciones de la vida, grandes y pequeñas. Tenemos que admitir que estaríamos perdidos sin Jesús. Jesús no ha venido a condenar el pecador, sino para mostrarnos el camino al Padre. "Padre, no se haga mi voluntad, sino la tuya".
