Am I Called to Serve? By Spencer Clark, Family & Youth Minister
Every human being has been given talents and abilities from God. These gifts differ
radically from person to person:
Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if
prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who
teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who
contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts
of mercy, with cheerfulness. (Romans 12:6–8 ESV)
He lists: prophecy, serving, teaching, giving, leading, and mercy as spiritual gifts. Perhaps
you don’t feel like any of these apply to you. But are you good at something? Is there
something you like to do? A hobby? You would be surprised how skills can help the work of
the church.
We have members who sew for AHG and VBS, people who do handiwork and plumbing,
electricians, and woodworkers. We have cooks, supply organizers, the tech savvy, the
outsoorsman, and expert cleaners. We have people who love visiting and those that prefer to
send cards. There are musicians, artists, and medically trained professionals. Maybe you’re a
wiz with numbers or reading. Even these talents can help others. Maybe you enjoy shopping:
you can help us with VBS!
Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of
sins. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received
a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.
(1 Peter 4:8–10 ESV)
There are so many ways that you can serve people and the church that don’t involve being
in front of people. We as Christians all are called to serve. Each of us have gifts and these gifts
may be used to help others. Peter however leaves us with a warning: not using our gifts means
we aren’t being good managers of God’s grace.
If we can do anything to help you find a place to belong with the work at church, ask a
leader. We are here to help you serve.
