MAGLEV VEHICLES
TEAM: THE EXTREMISTS
SCROLLS 2112
WHAT IS MAGLEV?
• High speed rail technology; train is suspended on a magnetic cushion above a magnetized track and so travels free of friction.
• It travels at a speed of 400-482 kmph or higher being suspended, guided & propelled on a magnetized guide-way.
HISTORY• 1900s :
• Ideation of friction less train by Robert Goddard & Emile Bachelet.
• 1937-41 : • Basic maglev concept
was introduced.
• Series of German patents for magnetic levitation trains was awarded to Hermann Kemper.
TECHNOLOGICAL ASPECTS
The Maglev works on three basic concepts:
1. Levitation
2. Propulsion
3. Guidance
LEVITATION PROPULSIONGUIDANCE
Levitation or suspension can be achieved by:
1. EMS (Electromagnetic Suspension)• Earnshaw’s theorem.
• Attractive Force.
2. EDS (Electrodynamic Suspension)• Repulsive Force
LEVITATION PROPULSIONGUIDANCE
Maglev train receives its propulsive force by two methods:
1. LIM - Linear Induction Motor
2. LSM – Linear Synchronous Motor
LEVITATION PROPULSIONGUIDANCE
• Sideward forces required for vehicle to follow the guideway.
• Exactly analogous to Suspension forces i.e. Attractive or Repulsive.
• Same or separate magnets can be used to provide both lift and guidance.
CONSUMPTION OF ENERGY
Energy is used in:1. Overcoming air drag.• Power is a function of cube of the velocity.
2. Acceleration.• Energy required per unit distance is the function of square of the velocity.
3. Miscellaneous works such as air-conditioning, lightning, etc.
EFFICIENCY
• Power: Maglev – 6 MW, TGV – 8MW• Energy: 0.4 MJ/passenger at speed of 480 kmph• Passenger fare: Maglev - $0.03/mile, Airplane - $0.15/mile• Guideways: No mechanical contact & wear i.e. low maintenance
Bulk purchasing of power: Cost reduces to half the cost of residential power ($0.04 - $0.07)
SAFETYSafety Features:• Collision avoidance highest priority.• Multiple magnet modules.• Sensors for failure warning.• Inverters for power failure.• Impact protection (Upto 18kmph).

WHY MAGLEV?• Faster trips• High Reliability• Petroleum Independence• Less Polluting• High capacity• High safety• Convenience• Improved Comfort
CONCLUSIONThe implementation cost for the project was $32M/Kilometer back when the project started but now in this era we can reduce the cost to $12.5M/Kilometer.
With the research conducted it shows that maglev is an environment friendly, cost-effective, alternative transportation system with significant public benefits.
