Did somebody ever advice you not to do what you want in life? This is going to sound bad but her intentions were good, my mum. She really didn’t want me to do art at first. I think coming from a black background parents always feel the need to remind us that being black is a struggle and that you always have to work ten times harder than the next person, as racism still exists. What makes you angry? Ungrateful people and when I run out of masking tape. What is important? What is important to me is having a voice for people that don’t have one. What inspires you? Everything that I am surrounded by

Grace Mirindi Who are you? I am someone who believes in justice and that’s why I do art. What do you do? I am artist who feels that a lot of things in this world are overlooked. I create sculptural creations which reflect on what I experience as a British African. Why? For me it feels like a natural way of being able to express myself and share my feelings. I hope to make the audience aware of political issues in other countries such as my homeland Congo. What did you want to be when you were a child? I wanted to be a nun so that I could help others.

Who are you? I don’t know yet What do you do? Make stuff called art. Why? I do what I do to try and express something that wouldn ’ t necessarily be expressed in any other way and to evoke a reaction in the viewer. What did you want to be when you were a child? When I was a child I wanted to be a barrister so that I could argue for a living. What are your hopes for the future? To be happy. Did somebody ever advice you not to do what you want in life? Yes, everyone thought that I should do something more academic than art but I decided to prove them wrong and show them that art as a subject could be just as academic. Did somebody ever advice you not to do what you want in life? Yes, everyone thought that I should do something more academic than art but I decided to prove them wrong and show them that art as a subject could be just as academic. What makes you angry? Being woken up early or just generally – I just hate it! Also when someone makes you a really bad tea, I can’t stand sugar in tea! What is important? Making sure that everyone has a voice. What inspires you? Being outside and different environments, also me family. What keeps you going? Probably trying to make my Nana proud and a constant supply of tea.

Who are you? Archie Leigh-Jones What do you do? Art most of the time, cleaning on Sundays. Why? I like a clean toilet. What did you want to be when you were a child? A car designer or an animator. Something arty. Did someone ever advice you not to do something you wanted to do? My Mum stopped me buying a Hawaiian shirt. I don’t know what I was thinking. What makes you angry? Ruining a piece of art when it was almost finished.

What is important? A good nights sleep, collections, humour, engaging art, freedom of speech, really nice things that people discard so I can have them, cheeky old men, booze in the evening, toys, looking at things move, resolving arguments, hands on activities, getting on with it, a good assortment of tools, film, music, being clean but not too clean and being silly. What inspires you? Art most of the time, cleaning Ryan Gander, Martin Creed and all important things above.
