A survey of peer and cross applicant institutions was conducted in May­June 2005 with questions regarding the faculty status of librarians.  26 institutions responded.

A survey of peer and cross applicant institutions was conducted in May­June 2005 with questions regarding the faculty status of librarians and benefits available.  26 institutions responded, of which 13 answered an unqualified “yes” when asked if all librarians there have faculty status.  The first column below reflects the benefits available to librarians at all 26 institutions that responded to the survey.   The second column includes only the 13 that answered “yes” to whether or not all librarians have faculty status.  Benefits are listed in order by the number of institutions at which they are offered.

Libraries in a networked age: endings, beginnings, and continuities (CLP!) March 17, 2005Co­sponsored by the Library and the Classics Department. Professor Gregory Crane, Editor­in­Chief of the Perseus Project and a "digital librarian" talked about the current state of electronic archives, the opportunities they afford to everyone who uses them, and the challenges they face as they grow in size and complexity even as the technology on which they depend changes constantly. 

Permanence of Books Wednesday, April 13, 2005Nicholas Basbanes, author of four books on books, book collecting, and the world of printing met with several Humanities classes and delivered a lecture on the Permanence of Print. Co­sponsored by the Library, the Humanities, and the Dean’s Office.

Precious Monsters: Big Predators in a Crowded WorldApril 20, 2005David Quammen, renowned and award­winning science and nature writer gave a presentation on the topic of his latest book which explored "large predators, their ecological and mythic significance to humans, and the question of whether any wild populations of lions, crocodiles, tigers, and bears will exist on this planet in 100 years." Co­sponsored by the Dean's office, the Biology Department and the Library.

Sunday Afternoon with Ron Rash ­ Greenville Humanities FestivalApril 24, 2005Ron Rash, award­winning poet and author of One Foot in Eden and Saints at the River, will spoke at the Greenville Humanities Festival. Co­sponsored by the Greenville County Library. 

Student Art CompetitionApril 2005The quote guiding the Year of the Library, "The library is a mirror to the past and a window to the future," was from the Vartan Gregorian's biography The Road to Home: My Life and Times. Works exhibited in the Year of the Library Art Competition reflect Furman students' interpretations of Gregorian's words. Co­sponsored by the Library and the Art Department.
