SDFI Forensic Hand Map Development Notes

2020 200501

Executive Summary

The SDFI Forensic Hand Map is a tool used by professionals during photodocumentation processes. When used as instructed, the photographer will be able to capture a series of overlapping forensic hand images for medical, forensic, legal, research and educational purposes. The primary purpose of the SDFI Forensic Hand Map Development Notes is to explain who, what, when, where, why, and how SDFI developed the SDFI Forensic Hand Map. Medical, forensic, legal, technical, and educational photodocumentation professionals should read this document if there is a need to validate and confirm specific technical details related to the creation and use of the SDFI Forensic Hand Map. The SDFI Forensic Hand Map Development Notes may be copied, printed, posted and/or linked provided it is kept current and whole. Introduction In August 2011 professionals representing nursing science, forensic science, education and business met with SDFI-TeleMedicine staff. The intent was to produce a simple and effective tool that could be used by any professional photographer to capture images of a person’s hands, both front and back. The tool created would assist all parties who are involved with medical and forensic photodocumentation. The solution had to be cost effective, sanitary, user friendly and self-explanatory. At the time of development research articles on the specific subject of forensic hand mapping could not be found. One semi-related article was posted in the African Journal of Health Sciences, 12(1-2), 2005. The author focused on personal identification through fingernail shapes, similar to the concept of fingerprints. Follow-up articles on the subject of using fingernail shapes to identify a person were not found.

Development Tools Used to Create the SDFI Forensic Hand Map The SDFI Forensic Hand Map is printed on letter sized paper. Pastel/light blue color paper provides excellent contrast. Paper products used in the development of SDFI Forensic Hand Maps are generic in nature and purchased from various online and/or local office supply stores. General Information More than 250 prints were produced during and after development before final print version became available. The grid spacing, on random sample prints was measured with multiple ABFO® L-shaped scales to ensure printing and grid consistency. Each complete square on the map represents a one-inch square, give or take the thickness of the actual printed lines. The reference circles are also one inch in diameter, give or take the thickness of the actual printed lines. Software Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 (12.0.6557.5001) SP2 MSO (12.0.6554.5001) was used to create the first SDFI® Forensic Hand Maps. Currently, Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2016 is used to update and export to a PDF/XPS document format for printing. Hand maps must be printed at “Actual Size” through Adobe Acrobat Reader. SDFI Forensic Hand Maps are provided free of charge until further notice.
