SDT STUDY STRUCTURE (1 / 5)

• You should NOT follow courses with familiar content• Read the Course descriptions and find out which courses you want to be

exempted for• You can also talk to the teacher of the course

• Send an application together with documentation for the courses you have take before to the Study Board

• Study Guide > Curricula credit transfer and exemptions > Credit transfer and exemption (www.itu.dk)

SDT STUDY STRUCTURE (2 / 5)

• You have a number of mandatory course ECTS, specialisation ECTS and optional ECTS – make sure that you know how many of each you have.

• If you have been given 22,5 or more ECTS of dispensation based on your previous studies, you have to take two specialisations.• Not applicable for Software Engineering students!

• Make sure that you do not choose two courses with overlapping content.• Remember the rule of binding course registration.• You can write a project instead of taking a course for your optional modules.

SDT STUDY STRUCTURE (3 / 5)

• You have (at least) 22.5 ECTS of optional study activities• For these, you can choose any of the courses in the ITU course base, except for

BSc courses, and courses that overlap in content with other courses that you have already taken.

• You could also use your optional modules to be a guest student at another university (must be at MSc level)

• Or you could write an individually defined project in a group, alone, or in cooperation with a company.

• There is the possibility of designing an individual specialisation, if e.g. you have a special interest that is not covered by any of the existing specialisations

• An individual specialisation can be made up from ITU courses, projects, or courses at other universities

• Guidelines: • A specialisation is 22,5 ECTS• All courses/projects must be at MSc level• There must be a clear coherency and progression in the specialisation• A specialisation must have components at an advanced level leading up to the final thesis writing• More about specializations tomorrow

• You have up to five years to finish your MSc, counting from the day you started – the average is 2,5 years

• If you have not passed at least 7,5 ECTS over a two year period, your enrollment at ITU will be canceled

• Leave of absence and maternity leave does not count towards the five / two year rules

• You can take a leave of absence when you have passed at least 60 ECTS, but you can apply for a dispensation from this rule in certain circumstances (illness, etc.)

• You can start writing your master thesis when you have passed 75 ECTS (But it must finish your degree!)

Study Techniques• I am not trained in the art of Study Technique• But here is a few hints (based on experience)

• Create a plan (before you fall behind)• Form study groups• Stay focused on your goal (You are learning this for a reason)• Ask questions! (There are NO dumb questions, only dumb students who were to afraid to ask the

questions in classes and got the exact same question at the exam)• Take a course or read about Study Technique (PROSA is most likely sponsoring a free one this

semester)• Don’t forget to have fun• And most Important: Find your own style!

No network?• A good network is very important

• Studies show that network is more important than good grades• Can help you if you hit the wall• It might be a bit harder to create a network at SDT

• The average SDT student might already have a very extensive network (no hard facts, just personal experience)

• Remember to remain open for new people• Remember that you can find people everywhere• Scrollbar• Project clusters is sometimes also an option

Group work• How many of you are familiar with group work?• Ambitions in a group? Are you going for the best grade, just learning or is this

course not that important to you?• Dividing task or working together?• A very good idea is to “make a contract” when you create the group (a few

examples):• Are we going for the top grade?• Are we going to work in weekends and late at night?

Step out of your comfort zone• If you are bad at coding, you need to do it more, not less• Same goes with English, Designing, Testing, everything• You need to tell people in your group that you will be doing, for example, some

programming even though they are better and faster than you• If you are good at something, remember to let the others do some of that

particular work as well, even though it slows down things• You are ALL here to learn!
