SDTF Think Nui Evalua on

I. Introduc on

Friday, March 6, 2015, was the University of Hawaii Community Colleges’ Excellence in Educa on Day, designated annually in March for faculty, staff, and administrators to a end presenta ons related to improving instruc on and student success. Howev-er, because there con nues to be few sessions oriented towards non-instruc onal staff, the Honolulu Community College Staff Development Task Force (SDTF) sponsored an event for Civil Service and APT employees as an on-campus alterna ve to the Hawaii Strategy Ins tute at Leeward Community College. This built upon the prior year’s experience with the Indoor Drive-In to include instruc onal sessions and a keynote speaker (A achment 1 is a detailed flyer send out to staff).

Planning began in December 2014 with considera on of possible ac vi es and the thought of finding a keynote speaker to set the tone for the day. The popularity of the Indoor Drive-In was strongly sugges ve of again showing a movie.

Because professional speakers o en book their appearances far in advance, and for sizable fees, it was difficult securing a suitable person within two months. Fortunately, a recommenda on was made for Kaala Souza and he was able to accommodate the SDTF’s calendar and budgetary limita ons. A er consulta on with Mr. Souza and delibera on among the task force members, the theme of his speech, and the overall day, would become “Think Nui.”

The idea for sessions taught by staff for staff arose organically. There were a number of possibili es, including topics in workplace produc vity such as Google Docs and Windows 8, but ul mately the task force was limited by not only the skill set of the staff, but to those willing to teach these skills. A er ini al hesita on by most of the presenters, they were eventually persuaded to teach a breakout session.

Lunch was op onal for those wan ng to purchase Korean plates and socialize with other staff. Most of the morning and through-out lunch, various staff collec ons were displayed in the entrance to the Loui room. It was an idea discussed briefly that was not a focus of the SDTF, but enough staff were willing to par cipate so it was added to the day’s events.

Lastly, the a ernoon was slated for the movie. Big Hero 6 was selected due to its availability and consistency with the general idea of Think Nui. Popcorn and water were available to staff who signed up to a end.

II. Assessment

An online survey was available for two weeks a er the event for all staff to complete, even those who weren’t able to a end any of the ac vi es. The SDTF hoped to receive informa on on reasons why staff were not able to a end in addi on to feedback on the various aspects of the event itself. There was also a debriefing among the SDTF’s members to add their insights on the planning and execu on.

The complete survey results including open end-ed responses are in A achment 2, but the fol-lowing summarize the more salient points:

Need to do planning far in advance. Even December is rela vely late to coordinate volunteers and ac vi es for the following March. It would not be out of the ques on for the permanent Staff Development Com-mi ee (SDC), once established, to begin planning in July or as soon as the member-ship is finalized. In par cular, it is prefera-ble to iden fy and contact poten al key-note speakers well in advance due to their busy schedules.

The SDTF did an excellent job in keeping people informed of the date and mes. 100% of respondents, including those who could not a end, reported that they had received sufficient no ce.

Although turnout was lower than what the SDTF had hoped for, par cipants were mostly enthusias c. Almost 93% of survey respondents were in agreement that the keynote speech was worth a ending and over 90% responded with “somewhat agree” or “strongly agree” that the breakout sessions were helpful for their interests.

Over 80% of respondents agreed that they liked having the collec ons to browse; over 80% responded with “somewhat agree” or “strongly agree” that the movie “Big Hero 6” was appropriate and consistent with the theme of Think Nui.

One survey comment noted that there should have been more gender-neutral sessions, although as previously men oned, the constraint was the willingness of staff to teach a par cular subject. Those just happened to be in areas that some may not have as much appeal for men as women. The mix of any future sessions will hinge up-on the ability to iden fy volunteer or rela vely low-cost professional instructors.

Producing the Think Nui day required a great deal of effort from the SDTF members and the various acolytes, but in the end it was rewarding to see the staff come together and interact in ways they normally wouldn’t.

The inability to close offices to the public affects par cipa on, but a bigger issue is the general a tude of in-difference among the staff. A different group of individuals on the SDC with fresh ideas and new energy may be effec ve at increasing interest and par cipa on in staff development—it’s not necessary for the format or even

ming of a Staff Development Day to remain the same over me.

Related to the future staff development ac vi es, fi een survey respondents stated that they would be willing to serve on a planning commi ee for an event; six respondents expressed willingness to serve on the SDC. While these aren’t firm commitments, it’s encouraging to find interest.

All a endees were asked to submit an essay if they were planning to incorporate Think Nui into their lives for what was hoped to be longer-term impacts. One person submi ed some short-term and long-term goals (A achment 3), but preferred to remain anonymous.

THINK NUI Staff Development Day

March 6, 2015

NUI is a Hawaiian word that means great, big, and abundant. It’s a word that includes the idea of larger and more expansive. It’s the way we need to think if we want to move from just getting by and surviving to abundance and thriving. This type of thinking is what is needed if we are to accomplish the goals Honolulu Community College strives towards.

Movie: Big Hero Six (Animated) When young robotics genius Hiro Hamada gets to visit the school where his brilliant brother Tadashi studies, and meets his friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tamago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred, he wants to join them.

Just as Hiro impresses the head of the school with his invention, a fire breaks out in the building and Tadashi goes back inside. When that leads to a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his brother's invention—a robot named Baymax who can heal people—and transforms him into a warrior. Hiro and his new friends transform into a band of high-tech heroes who are determined to solve the mystery.

Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, one of the key themes is the question of what do you do with your potential? We all have different gifts and are stronger when we unite in a common cause.

Location: 2-201 Popcorn will be provided. Chairs will be available but you are welcome to bring your own chair/floor mat.

11 I'm not sure I know enough about the point of staff development days to be onany kind of committee for them. Especially when people's offices are not allowedto close for those days, then not much campus-wide participation can beexpected anyways. I do like the idea behind them though!

THNIUNIK

To break through the challenge of thinking small and move into thinking NUI, I will incorporate these personal vision statements in my daily life to help me apply the ‘Think NUI’ concepts . . . . . 1. I will celebrate life every day. 2. If I want something that I’ve never had, I must do something I’ve never done before. 3. I will believe in infinite possibilities…thinking ‘out-of-the-box’. 4. The power is within me. I must learn from the past, live in the present, and plan for the future. 5. I will expand my comfort zone in small ways every day that will lead to NUI changes over time. 6. I will not let my talents go unused; I owe it to God to utilize what he’s blessed me with. 7. I am strengthened by my blessings and driven by my dreams. 8. I will always remember to fall asleep with a dream and wake up with a purpose. 9. I will work for a cause, not applause. 10. I will make every day a chance to make a difference in somebody’s life.
