the upcoming year. This year’s retreat was a suc-cessful discussion of how the Friends can best work to assist in the development of John D. MacArthur Beach State Park’s wonderful potential to maintain its distinctive position the Florida Park System. Following are the goals established for the years 2003/2004: • Continue building Friends memberships for revenue and volunteers. • Expand our public relations by exploring com- munity partnerships. • Provide environmental education to a culturally diverse community. • Expand the Nature Center. • Explore additional fundraising opportunities in conjunction with the construction project.

Each September, the Friends holds its Annual Membership Meeting, where we elect directors and offi cers for the upcoming year. Regular monthly meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 5:00 p.m. in the Nature Center. If you have never attended an annual or regular board meeting (or even if you have), we invite you to attend and con-sider becoming more involved with this exceptional Citizen Support Organization. With the help of our volunteers, our exemplary Park staff, and our mem-bership—that’s YOU—we can accomplish amazing things at our special Park.

Your board of direc-tors is a dedicated, in-dustrious, and fun-loving group. On a Saturday in June, the directors of the Friends enjoyed a delightful tour of Munyon Island. As we headed out that lovely morning, we were treated to a won-derful ride on the Park’s new pontoon boat and a peek at the resplendent roseate spoonbills that visit the mangroves and mudfl ats in the estuary. If you haven’t yet visited Munyon Island, I encourage you to do so. It’s only a twenty minute kayak ride. The island is a wild and beautiful area with a fascinating history (see Dan West,Historian in Residence, for details). The Munyon Island trip was part of the Board of Directors’ Annual Retreat, a yearly event held primarily to assess the Friends’ accomplish-ments of the prior year and to identify goals for

Nancy Y. Cohen, volunteer and angel since 1997 came to the aid of the Park, once again! Last year, noticing the reef aquarium was gray and dingy, she offered to fi nance a face lift. Now visitors can view a sparkling, freshly painted tank with a genuine reef rock substrate and high tech lighting. Our hatchling turtle, many fi sh, and invertebrates look especially colorful in the new set-ting. An added bonus for the fi sh is a special chiller to keep them cool and comfortable.

Nancy’s contributions to the Park are not limited to fi nancial sup-port. She’s been a dependable vol-unteer for the Natural Selections Art Exhibitions and, as a biologist with a Masters Degree from Georgetown University, she has shared her skills by leading na-ture walks and teaching school groups during her time at the Park.

Nancy has a new project. She became

a Master Gardener and hopes to share her new knowledge of plants with people in her community.

Thanks, Nancy, for all you have done. You are the embodiment of volunteerism.

At times it was easy to forget that I was working at all.
