SEA-TVET Workshop on Integrating Entrepreneurship and Digital Learning in Hospitality and Tourism
14-15 December 2016, SMKN 2 Malang, Malang, East Java, Indonesia
Hosted by SMKN 2 Malang
I. BACKGROUND
Greater regional integration, the rapid growth of Southeast Asian economies, and the official incorporation of nations into the ASEAN Community on 31 December 2015 has led to a demand for more specialized and intensive training which will help advance regional economic growth and aid the transformation from a labour-intensive to a technologically-intensive industrial sector.
With this in mind, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) has been identified as one of the seven priority areas for educational development in Southeast Asia from 2015 to 2035. This was officially confirmed by Southeast Asian ministers of education at the Strategic Dialogue of Education Ministers (SDEM) meeting held in Lao PDR in September 2014.
Since August 2015, the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) together with Ministries of Education, Ministries of Higher Education, Ministries of Labour, other related Ministries, and international development agencies in Southeast Asian countries have joined hands to promote quality of TVET in the Southeast Asian region through harmonisation and internationalisation by organising various regional meetings for all levels of TVET personals, such as High Officials, policy makers, TVET curriculum experts, TVET institution leaders, teachers and students. According to the regional policy directions called “Chiang Mai Joint Statement”, the SEA-TVET High Officials Meeting in August 2015 agreed that , Hospitality and Tourism is the first priority industry sector as a pilot for implementing regional harmonisation.
To promote the quality and standard of Hospitality and Tourism TVET education in Southeast Asian countries, it is necessary for the TVET institutions to enhance the global competitiveness of TVET graduates to be equipped with skills and knowledge that meet needs of industry, and prepare them with skills and competencies for the 21st century and ASEAN community – especially entrepreneurship, creativity and digital mind-set and skills. In addition, the development of partnership between institutions for exchanging students and teachers are important for internationalistaion and developing global competitiveness of students and teachers. In response to the regional needs as directed by the 2nd High Officials Meeting on SEA-TVET, in Bali, May 2016, to improve the quality of TVET in the Southeast Asian region by promoting the sharing of innovative TVET teaching and learning practices among TVET institutions, the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) and SEAMEO Regional Centre for Open Learning Education (SEAMEO SEAMOLEC) in collaboration with SMK Negeri 2 Malang will organise a SEA-TVET Workshop on Integrating Entrepreneurship and Digital Learning in Hospitality and Tourism on 14-15 December 2016, at SMKN 2 Malang, Malang, Indonesia. This workshop is a part of the SEA-TVET Programme to promote quality and standard of Technical and Vocational Education and Training through developing and sharing innovative teaching and learning practices for improving students’ global competitiveness.
