Welcome to 2014As our federal election lands its verdict and we recover from the gritty cut and thrust of political debate, some thoughtful time out is surely welcome in 2014! What better way to think about our place in the world than by sharing a room with other people, taking a moment away from our devices to be carried by soaring music, to be moved by the power of language, or to laugh at our own foibles ...

This season’s program continues Malthouse Theatre’s quest to provoke and challenge. We entertain with irreverence and the richest of theatrical languages. The often uproarious process of theatre-making itself comes under fire in Simon Stone’s version of The Government Inspector. Chinese director Meng Jinghui takes on pressing ethical questions that cross cultures and unite us globally with his take on Brecht’s The Good Person of Szechuan. The brutality of the Melbourne streetscape holds us momentarily hostage – and then accountable – in Peta Brady’s poetic Ugly Mugs. The elusive holy grail of hope and desire are refracted through two very different major Australian works: Patrick White’s classic Night on Bald Mountain and Iain Grandage’s brand new opera of Tim Winton’s The Riders. How do you, our audience, connect these representations of who we are? How does this jigsaw of productions piece together our collective concerns and aspirations?

There is great heart and humanity in the season too. The strains of Aboriginal writer Richard Frankland’s acoustic guitar exquisitely harmonise with and underscore his big-hearted yarns in Walking into the Bigness. Roslyn Oades’ fine audio work, Hello, Goodbye & Happy Birthday, unites 18 and 80-year-olds celebrating these great bookends to the adventure of life. Lucas Jervies’ version of Roald Dahl’s The Witches makes the old feel young and makes the young squeal and scream with delight. Alirio Zavarce’s The Book of Loco then charms and indulges the madness in us all. Finally, Paul Capsis in Ash Flanders and Declan Greene’s Calpurnia Descending is a cheeky, subversive and totally audacious end-of-year treat.

THE RABBLE will be our 2014 Company in Residence. It cuts a fine trajectory from important off-site independent work, to Orlando as part of Helium, and through the clamorous responses to Story of O. This is a company that cannot be ignored as it asserts its theatricality and daring in everything it tackles. 

In all this Malthouse Theatre seeks to create an opening that leads into the abstract world of ideas, emotions and inspiration. This kind of theatrical ‘aperture’ reveals the space in which actors and concepts play. You, our audience, are invited into that space. It is where we can join together for an hour or two of imaginative focus and invigoration; where we can stop and hear ourselves think, provoked by the possibilities of what could transpire.

Frankenstein // proves nothing is so painful as great and sudden change.Frankenstein / as re-imagined by THE RABBLE’s Emma Valente and Kate Davis (Orlando), situates Mary Shelley’s masterpiece in a matriarchal world that worships female fertility. The tormented genius Viktor Frankenstein is consumed by his inability to create life. Driven to terrifying lengths, Viktor subverts the laws of nature and gives birth to a motherless monstrosity.

Night on Bald Mountain // confronts the corrosion of one’s better self.Night on Bald Mountain / has been called Patrick White’s attempt at the first Australian tragedy. A new nurse has arrived to take care of the notorious Mrs Sword at the house on Bald Mountain. Despite best intentions, she finds herself swept up in the machinations and preoccupations of a cast of restless oddities. Ultimately, the flaws of human nature soon emerge as forces beyond all control.

Malthouse Theatre Associate Director Matthew Lutton (The Bloody Chamber) and his magnificent ensemble cast take on a true classic of the Australian repertoire. A visceral and visually intense theatre experience, Lutton strands White’s characters upon a landscape that rises to life. As they all struggle against the realities of the world they inhabit, each one tragically / confronts the corrosion of one’s better self.

Ugly Mugs // lurk around every corner.Ugly Mugs / are the faces that modern life finds more convenient to ignore than confront; the violent clients of a culture concealed. Inspired by her work supporting Melbourne sex workers, Peta Brady (The Slap) writes and stars in this discordant experience laced with pitch-black wit. With dreamlike shifts between time and place, it weaves a complex and uneasy drama about the disturbing realities of life on the streets.

Challenging to the last, Ugly Mugs drip-feeds doses of brutality and banality until the truth is finally strong enough to lift its head. Brady’s characters wade through the aftermath of violence, leaving us in no doubt about the dark truths that / lurk around every corner.

Alirio Zavarce writes and stars in a semi-autobiographic demonstration of his ‘Theory of Rational Madness’. Composed by the acclaimed Iain Grandage with the libretto by Alison Croggon, this anticipated collaboration between Malthouse Theatre and Victorian Opera also unites respective artistic directors Marion Potts and Richard Mills.

Scully’s wife, the mother of his child, has disappeared. Her absence looms large as those left behind look for answers, desperate to recover their lost sense of belonging. Follow Scully and his daughter as they pursue people, places and pasts that have escaped beyond reach.
