HOLIDAYS IN EUROPEFALL/WINTER 2012
OUR MOST VALUE-PACKED
SEASON
THE WORLD’S LEADING RIVER CRUISE LINE...BY FAR®
Dear Traveler,
I love traveling in Europe in the fall and winter time. The weather is cooler and there is a magic in the air. The towns are less crowded, locals go about their business and you often gain a more authentic impression.
For 2012, Viking is introducing our new Fall Celebrations cruise series. So reserve a European river cruise in November; treat yourself, leave the cooking to us and come celebrate Thanksgiving (and other European holidays) with the Viking family. And, the holiday season is one of the best times to visit Europe when the spirit and romance of the holidays come alive at the festive Christmas markets.
The easiest and most pleasurable way to move from one town to the next is on Europe’s rivers. And Viking’s beautiful ships—including the new Viking Longships—will take you there in comfort. Many of the dates earlier in the year are already reserved, but by choosing to travel later in the season, you will benefit from our value pricing; in fact, you can travel for approximately half the price of the higher months.
I invite you to join us this fall or winter on a river cruise through the wonderland that is Europe.
Sincerely,
Torstein Hagen Chairman
P.S. See your travel agent or call Viking at 1-877-668-4546 to get the best value on our all-inclusive itineraries with our Special Savings Discount—2-FOR-1 cruise and up to 2-FOR-1 air—expiring March 31, 2012.

CELEBRATE THE SEASON WITH VIKING
What more relaxing or rewarding way to explore Europe than from the river? Gently gliding alongside
enchanting landscapes and medieval villages right into the heart of the world’s great cities, there really
is no more memorable vacation. Spring and summer in Europe are lovely times to sail, but travel in the
fall, and you’ll see the rich, jeweled colors of forests and vineyards. And with less people, you can enjoy
more room to discover Europe’s many attractions, and more opportunity to encounter the locals.

FALL IN LOVE WITH EUROPE...
IN THE FALL
In 2012, Viking is introducing its Fall Celebrations
cruise series. We invite you to join us in November
when you can treat yourself, leave the cooking
to us and come celebrate Thanksgiving with the
Viking family. With a nod to a home-cooked
meal, a traditional Thanksgiving feast—roasted
turkey with all the trimmings—will be served on
each November departure.
DISCOVER LOCAL TRADITIONS
Throughout your cruise, you will discover a
number of special days celebrated by the locals.
Listen as local children explain the tradition
of carrying their lanterns door to door to
commemorate the feast of St. Martin’s Day.
Sample a “soul pretzel,” a traditional treat
baked specifically for All Souls’ Day. Learn about
the significance of Erntedankfest, the German
counterpart to Thanksgiving. And so much more.

A CELEBRATION OF FINE FOOD
Succulent turkey with caramelized vegetables
grown in Germany’s market gardens. Clementines
poached in red wine from vineyards in Austria’s
Wachau Valley. Pumpkin pie made with pumpkins
grown in northern France. And with your freshly
caught salmon? Hand-picked dill from the organic
herb garden on the sun deck of a Viking Longship.
Our chefs use fresh, locally sourced ingredients to
create authentic dishes that are bursting with flavor.
CASUAL DINING IN ELEGANT STYLE
Greet the morning with a sumptuous breakfast
buffet in the dining room. Or pick up a croissant
and cappuccino and head off to the sun deck to
watch the river come to life. Lunch presents yet
more choice with a selection of inspiring dishes.
When evening falls, the artistry in the kitchen
culminates in a masterpiece of a multi-course
dinner, with a menu that incorporates traditional
influences as well as contemporary cuisine. To be
an occasion, it must be shared. And there is no
more relaxing place to share good food, good
wine and stories, too, with friends—old and
new — than in our intimate dining room.
SOMETHING DELICIOUS TO PAMPER
EVERY PALATE
Lighter choices, vegetarian dishes—our chefs work
with nutritionists to provide a selection of balanced
options. And, because some days you feel like a
simple supper, a perfectly grilled steak or chicken
breast or grilled salmon and Caesar salad is
always an option.
AND TO DRINK?
Freshly brewed coffee in the lounge, as you gaze at
the river’s early morning mist. Iced tea on the sun
deck, as you pass villages shaped by time. A bottle
of fine local wine served with lunch or dinner —
enjoy it all — it is all covered in your cruise fare.
JOIN US ON A DELIGHTFUL THANKSGIVING JOURNEY
There are few greater pleasures than fine food. Indeed, much of the joy of travel is the discovery of new
and exciting cuisine. On a Viking cruise, you can look forward to a variety of regional foods that gives
you a true flavor of each inspiring place you visit, all beautifully prepared and presented by our highly
trained chefs. As with every aspect of a Viking vacation, the choice is yours.

MELK’S GOLDEN ABBEY
As you sail along a peaceful stretch of the Danube, you approach a gold and ivory imperial fortress, resplendent with elegant details. Once a palace, the abbey at Melk is now a Benedictine monastery, school, museum and a library housing some 80,000 rare books and scrolls. See its interior, featuring soaring frescoes on walls and ceilings, and a glorious spiral staircase, on your tour.
DANUBE’S OLDEST CITY

AUSTRIA’S WACHAU VALLEY
The Wachau Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between the quaint Austrian cities of Melk and Krems along the Danube River. Many picturesque towns and vineyards are located along this 24-mile stretch, and the area is perfect for a leisurely sailing, taking photographs or just relaxing and enjoying a glass of one of its many local vintages.
CLASSICAL MUSIC CAPITAL
Known as the “City of Waltzes,” Austria’s capital of Vienna is widely considered to be the center of classical music. Here Strauss, Beethoven and Mozart composed many of their best-known works. Visitors can tour the homes of these famous composers and those of Haydn, Schubert, Brahms and more — now museums. A FEW HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR JOURNEY
THE NUREMBERG CHRISTMAS ANGEL
Every year, Germany’s most famous Christmas market opens its stalls to nearly
two million visitors from around the world. At 5:30 p.m. on the Friday before the
first Advent Sunday, the beautiful Christmas Angel recites a prologue from the
gallery of the Church of Our Lady.
With her white and golden dress, long blonde hair and golden crown,
Nuremberg’s Christmas Angel is kept busy in the days and weeks following the
opening of the market. She visits seniors at home, kindergartens, institutions and
hospitals, bringing joy to many people.
Nuremberg’s Christmas Angel has become famous in places as far away as the
United States—Chicago’s Christkindlmarket is fashioned after the market in
Nuremberg, and as by tradition is opened each year by the previous Nuremberg
Christmas Angel.

MEDIEVAL TOLL BOOTHS
The castles along the Rhine Valley were originally constructed as fortified residences to protect the land from marauders — but castle owners also utilized their strategically advantageous positions to impose tolls on passing merchants. This may explain why you will see so many castles while cruising the 35-mile stretch of the Rhine between Mainz and Bonn.
ANCIENT HEIDELBERG
Heidelberg is home to Germany’s oldest university, founded in 1386. It also features one of the Rhine’s most distinctive landmarks — the red sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle. Situated high above the town, the castle has sweeping views of the Neckar River Valley and
Heidelberg’s red-roofed charm. Stroll along narrow cobbled streets, shop in wide squares, see the imposing gates of the Old Town area and walk across the town’s famous Old Bridge.
ALSATIAN CUISINE
This region produces a savory cuisine that perfectly merges hearty German fare with French elegance. A typical dish is choucroute, featuring fermented white cabbage layered with spicy smoked pork —best served with potatoes and an Alsatian pinot blanc. Other meat specialties include Baeckeoffe, a traditional stew of marinated beef or lamb; charcuterie, sausages and other cured meats; goose liver pâté and Muenster cheese — enjoy them with a Gewürztraminer, Riesling or a hearty Kronenbourg beer.
COLOGNE’S CATHEDRAL
For a short time, the Cologne Cathedral was the world’s tallest building with its magnificent spires rising above the city. The cathedral’s construction took over 600 years to complete. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. Admire the lovely stained glass windows as you walk through its vaulted interior.

BRATISLAVA BRONZES
If you look carefully, you will notice that not everyone in Bratislava is made of flesh and blood. Some of the Slovakian capital’s most beloved citizens are cast in bronze. The most famous is Cumil, the Watcher, peeking out from a manhole in the street. There are others here and there; keep your eyes peeled!
THE TOWN OF MUSIC
The fourth-largest city in Austria, Salzburg is known for its great beauty, and for being the setting for the musical and film, The Sound of Music. It is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose childhood home can still be seen. The baroque Old Town area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend a delightful day there on this itinerary.
TREASURES IN BUDAPEST
A quick stroll from the dock in Budapest takes you to one of the city’s best marketplaces — the Great Market Hall, established in 1897. A variety of shopping stalls await you —supermarket and fishmongers in the basement, greengrocers and spice vendors on street level, and fine linens, knickknacks and delicious Hungarian treats like sausages and sweet pancakes on the floor above. A must-see.
SAMPLE VIENNA’S
MOST WANTED
Luckily, two delicious treats on your Vienna to-do list — the traditional Sachertorte and the city’s famous coffee — can be savored together. The original Sachertorte recipe has been a closely guarded Hotel Sacher secret since 1832, but most coffeehouses sell their own versions. Enjoy a cup of Viennese coffee and a sweet treat.
A FEW HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR JOURNEY
 Shopping in Budapest
 Dürnstein’s cobbled streets
THE LEGEND OF THE NUTCRACKER
In German’s Christmas markets, you’ll see nutcrackers of all shapes, colors and sizes. According
to German folklore, nutcrackers were given as keepsakes to protect your home and bring good
luck to your family. A fierce protector, the nutcracker bares its teeth to the evil spirits and
guards your family from danger. Nutcrackers were a part of traditional dining customs—the
more amusing and unusual the nutcracker, the better, as it provided a whimsical conversation
piece for guests who lingered over the dessert course, which included pecans and hazelnuts.
Writers, composers and artists immortalized the nutcracker, including Amadeus Hoffman
who, in 1816, wrote his novel, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Hoffman’s story was
the inspiration for Tchaikovsky’s famous Nutcracker Suite, which debuted as a ballet in
St. Petersburg in 1892, and is, to this day, a favorite holiday tradition around the world.

A FULL DAY IN PARIS
See the remarkable sights of this unforgettable city, including the iconic Eiffel Tower, Cathedral of Notre Dame, the Louvre and the Champs Elysées. Take a free afternoon to visit the Louvre, stroll the artists’ district of Montmartre or cruise along the Seine for lovely views of the monuments and graceful bridges.
TOUR NORMANDY’S
HISTORIC BEACHES
See World War II landmarks and Omaha Beach. Spend time at the Arromanches Debarkment Museum and pay your respects at the American Military Cemetery. On the way back to your ship, pass Gold Beach, Courseulles sur Mer and Juno Beach
GOTHIC ROUEN
Founded by the Romans, Rouen is situated amidst the chalk cliffs along the Seine and filled with half-timbered houses and exquisite Gothic architecture. The city is known for its role in the heroic tragedy of Joan of Arc, patron saint of France. Tried and condemned for heresy, she was burned alive at the stake in Rouen’s Old Marketplace in May 1431.
CAMEMBERT AND CALVADOS
Camembert — a soft, creamy cheese, traditionally aged for at least three weeks — was first made in Normandy in the late 18th century. When in northern France, sample this buttery delight at room temperature with a slice of French bread and a few grapes or apple slices. And speaking of delicious, try some calvados — a brandy made from the plentiful local apples, which also produce a wide variety of ciders.

PARIS IN THE WINTERTIME
Few cities are as beautiful in winter as Paris. “The City of Light” lights up more than ever
when bridges and monuments along the Seine are illuminated. And if you enjoy visiting
museums, galleries and historic churches, or just relaxing in a Parisian café, you’ll enjoy
less crowds and the opportunity to linger. In fact, winter is often the time when you’ll
find some of the year’s best exhibitions and events.
Likewise, restaurants seem to reserve their best menus for winter, when you can indulge in
oysters, foie gras, truffles and a variety of game dishes. A visit to Paris would be incomplete
without a little shopping. There is nothing more magical than strolling along the
Champs-Élysées with its illuminated white twinkling lights. Also make time to visit Avenue
Montaigne with its haute couture window displays, inviting boutiques and brasseries.
