It is hard to believe that we are almost halfway through 2013 and like other years it has been incredibly busy. Our winter was busy with decal renewal for owners and vendors as well as a major air conditioning renovation at the Beach Club. There was nothing short of a miraculous installation completed prior to the annual meeting in March, which was scheduled at the Beach Club due to the $30,000,000 renovation going on at the hotel.

In a month’s time we were designed, bid, permitted at the Town, upgraded from 15 tons of air conditioning to 21 tons, cleaned up and set for our first annual meeting not at the hotel. We appreciate your patience for the tight conditions and want to thank our vendors who gave us top priority

status during this time period as well as the groups that were rerouted while we were shut down.

Other renovations going on currently are new partitions for the beach bathrooms, root repairs and spot paving for rough areas on the bike paths, and an analysis of our roads and future repairs and replacement costs for our aging infrastructure. The hangtag beach parking began for the summer so have your tags out for beach season.

Fiscally we are within budget on all major budget categories and have only a 1% receivable for the collection of this year’s assessment. This is the lowest collection percentage for June in my memory. Real estate has been running slightly behind last year for

the first quarter but there are several sales pending so we are hoping to have a year on track with sales with 2012.

The hotel had a soft opening for some rooms during the Heritage and the completed renovation is now ready for viewing. Go on down and support our Sonesta neighbors as they have a general store so you don’t even have to leave Shipyard if you want to pick up a bottle of wine for dinner. The rooms are beautiful and the food and beverage is top notch so enjoy our commercial friends this summer, play some golf, tennis, dine and learn healthy cooking at Hilton Head Health.

Enjoy your summer and stay well.

Severe weather and summer go hand in hand in the low country.

When a storm approaches….If you are outside, find shelter in a building or car (preferably not a convertible!). The worst spot to be is in an open boat or in or near water. Do not think it is safe because lightening has already struck something ~ it can and often does strike the same spot more than once.

At home…..Unplug unnecessary appliances. Draw blinds and shades over windows ~ this will prevent glass from shattering into your home should a window break due to objects blown by the wind. Do not use the telephone or hair dryer. Do not take a bath, shower or do dishes by hand.

Remember ~ keep an eye on the sky!

The Sea Turtles are Coming...Joanne Voulelis, docent Coastal Discovery Museum and SC Master Naturalist

The nesting season for Sea Turtles on Hilton Head Island is May through October. Our Sea Turtle Patrol has now begun their daily morning beach walks looking for turtle activity. The first nest last season was May 8th. Over 320 nests were identified, one of the highest yields since 1985. Once a nest is dug, the eggs (anywhere from 80 to 150 per nest) will begin to hatch in about 60 days. Each next on our beach will be cordoned off with orange tape and a “do not disturb” sign attached. Sea Turtles remain on the endangered species list. You can help Sea Turtles by doing the following:

• Lights out from dusk to dawn: Turtles, both adults and hatchlings, need to return to the ocean. They typically emerge at night and use the brightest light over the horizon to guide them. If there are competing lights on the beach, they will get confused and become vulnerable to predators, exhaustion or dehydration. Turn off visible lights in ocean front buildings and do not use flash photography or shine flashlights near a turtle.

• Flatten sand castles: As hatchlings make their way to the ocean, it is helpful if they have a clear path. Hatchlings are small enough to fit in the palm of a hand so it is difficult for them to navigate over or around a sand castle.

• Don’t leave trash on the beach: If trash is ingested by a turtle, it can prove dangerous. Sea Turtles eat jelly fish; plastic bags, for instance, can look like dinner, but can be fatal if it becomes stuck in a turtles’ air passage.

• Observe from a distance: Should you be lucky enough to be on the beach during a hatching frenzy, please do not interfere with a hatchling’s journey to the sea. Also, do not attempt to touch or prod a mother turtle to move.

• Adopt a Nest: All proceeds go to maintain the Sea Turtle Protection Program (email: [email protected]).

Shipyard Real Estate 2nd Quarter Update. By your neighbor Karl Sneed

The numbers below represent 1/1/2000 to date. If you include what’s pending on the books Shipyard Real Estate is on an upward track. 2012 was a great up swing and 2013 looks very promising. Homes have taken

the biggest turn with increase in; number of sales, dollar per sq.ft. and low inventory making this a PERFECT TIME to sell your home. There is a shortage of homes on the market and I have buyers.
