    Construction and

    Expansion Joints

The size and placement of Construction and Expansion Joints are critical components to the design and cost of a

seating installation. The following descriptions of these joints are taken from The Architectural Graphics Standard.

    Expansion (Isolation) Joints:

These allow movement between the concrete slab and

xed parts of the building such as columns or walls.

    Construction Joints:

These joints provide stopping places during the oor

construction. These elements must be taken into

consideration in order to have a successful seating

layout. Each of these joints has a signicant impact on

the particular cost and design for installation.

    Horizontal Construction Joints:

These joints are in the concrete riser and are a concern

with riser mount chairs. The concrete is usually pre-cast

(but not always). The location of the joint or the height

of the riser from the deck to the joint are the critical

dimensions. When working on a job with this type of

joint, the riser height and the location of rebar have cost

implications. Special anchors may be required.

(Note: Our cast iron riser mount standards come in

3 sizes to accommodate a low, mid and high rise

situation. Due to cost of materials, the low rise standard

is the most expensive and thehigh rise standard is theleast expensive.) Details of this joint are critical at time

    of pricing!

Hussey Seating uses an oset plate to anchor the chairs

without altering the seating plan. The oset plate osets

the anchors enough to clear the joint. There is the

possibility that if one chair is oset, all chairs in that row

    may be oset.

    Vertical Construction Joints:

There are several options available to accommodate

joints that span a deck of seating.

The most cost eective method is with a carrier plate.Usually only one chair is aected by this anchoring

method. This permits movement of the building without

    damaging the chairs.

    Products for

    ADA Compliance

Hussey Seating Company oers several responses to the requirements for handicap accessibility and seating.

    Flip-Up Armrests:

This adaptation is designed to eliminate a barrier for

disabled patrons. The armrest is actually hinged near

the rear to swing up and become parallel with the back.

Each chair with a Flip-Up Armrest is denoted by the

universal handicap symbol for identication purposes.

This option is available on all three plastic chairs

models. It is not available on the Sentinel automate or

semi-automate. A removable armrest is a similar option,

which is available on the (steel) Olympiad.

    Armless Chairs:

Some of our chairs do not accommodate the

modications listed here as well as others. To comply

with the requirements of ADA and to meet the needs

of handicap patrons, some chairs are available without

armrests. This option is available on all three plastic

    chair models.

    Swing Away Companion Chair

This chair is a single, xed chair that rotates 90 degrees

from the ambulatory spectator position to allow for a

patron seated in a wheelchair. Essentially, the xed

chair swings away to provide room for the wheelchair.

There is a lock mechanism, which locks the chair inboth the fore and aft positions. Presently, this option is

    not available with the Medallion.

    Floor & Riser Design

    Requirements/Guidelines

    General Design Notes:

All oor, slabs and Risers constructed of concrete (pre-cast or poured) must meet the following criteria:

All concrete must have a minimum strength of 3000 P.S.I. or 20,684 N/M Sq. for proper anchor attachment.

All oors constructed of wood must be 1 " (3) thick minimum.

All anchors are supplied by Hussey Seating Company unless otherwise noted. If anchors are to be sup-

plied by someone other that Hussey Seating Company, notication must be made during the submittal

    process.

    Hardware and Drill Hole Requirements:

The minimum radius of 25 (762) is the primary limitation for a radius project. A smaller radius will require

    the use of individual chairs.

    ADA - American Disabilities Act:

Maximum length of a sloped oor is 30" (914) after which there must be a level of 5" (152)

    Chair Sizing

The chart assists in determining the chair sizes needed in a seating arrangement. The dimension for end spaces

has been factored into these calculations. However, the following chart will provide these dimensions.

    Chair Series End Dimension

    Fusion 2" (5)

    Legend 2" (5)

To use the Chair Size Chart, follow these procedures:

    1. Determine the space available for each row. [The chart automatically calculates a 2" (5) spacing at each

end of the row. If you require 3" (8), you must factor the dierence in.]

    2. Read down the column marked "feet" and then across the top marked "inches" and nd the appropriate

    dimension.

    3. Select the chair sizes from the suggested combinations.

    4. Staggered seating may be achieved by using varying chair size combinations in alternate rows.

NOTE: Reference applicable building code to determine the maximum number of seats allowed in a row.

    Sightline Formula

    Principle of Visibility

Line of Clear View for Spectator on Tiered

    Seating:

Angle A: Angle of Perfect visibility; looking over allheads.

Angle B: Angle of Good visibility; shifting position to

look between heads on the row immediately in front of

the spectator and over all heads.

Angle C: Angle of Fair visibility; shifting position to

look between the heads of two rows immediately in

front of the spectators and over all other heads.

    Denition:

The lower angle of angle C is approximately 5" (13)

above the eyes of the spectators in the third row in

front of the spectators. This angle C is called the angle

of clear view. The tangent of the angle of clear view =

3R-5"[13cm] / 3D, where R is the rise and D is the depth

    per row (row spacing).

Head Level from the Floor 4'1" (124)

Eye Level from the Floor 3'8" (112)

    Application:

The nal analysis being the perpendicular dimension

from the court line or the line of play to where the angle

of clear view intersects (focal point) should be as smallas possible.

    Principle of

    Visibility

Angle B is commonly used in determining oor

slope for auditorium, performing arts or theatre type

seating congurations. When angle B prole is used

in conjunction with staggered seating arrangement

(chair staggered or alternated in arrangements of sizes

opposite every other row) it allows unobstructed view

of spectators to a determined focal point at the screenor stage. The nal analysis is to have all sight lines

intersect at the desired focal point.

Angle C is most commonly used in determining riser

or stepped applications for gymnasiums, arena or

stadium type seating congurations. When angle B

prole is used (generally associated with an aligned

seating arrangement) it allows for unobstructed view of

spectators to a determined focal point at court line or

line of play. The nal analysis is to have all the criticalsightlines intersect the focal point or line of play at

    generally a maximum elevation of 4' (122).
