OGDENSBURG - Celebrat-ing the areas rich history andhistoric battles, Ogdensburgwill kick off Founders Daywith a mock battle, music andkids games.

More than 250 years ago theroar of cannon fire echoed overthe St. Lawrence River on thenow peaceful stretch betweenOgdensburg and Prescott,Ontario.

The final battle of theFrench and Indian War - thebattle that truly led to theFrench losing Canada - wasfought here in August 1760.

    Founders Day Weekend,

July 23-24, is the annual com-memoration of OgdensburgsFrench colonial history andthe Battle of the ThousandIslands. Lighthouse Pointradiates the color and

bustling encampment of whitecanvass tents.A vibrant French and Eng-

construction of Fort Lvisdownriver on Ile Royal, nowChimney Island. La Prsenta-tion was a wooden stockade;Lvis was a substantial fortifi-cation.

The 1760 Battle of theThousand Islands began withthe capture of the Frenchcorvette LOutauaise by aswarm of English row galleysoff abandoned Fort de laPrsentation. The battle con-tinued with the successful, weeklong siege of Fort Lvis. The English pressed on toaccept the capitulation ofMontreal.

By BRIAN KIDWELLI love a parade. That phrase pretty much

says it all, enhancing visionsof sunny skies, marchingbands, floats, and costumedentertainers.

And people. Thousandsupon thousands of people, happily crammed along theparade route.

That is the 51st Ogdens-burg International SeawayFestival parade. On Saturday,July 30, at 11 a.m., the color-ful and musical processionwill head down the length ofFord Street to the Greenbelt.

There will be people. Lots of

them. Festival co-chairmanKenneth G. Cole is certain ofit.

    Ill be anywhere from10,000 to 20,000 people,hesaid.

All of the parades partici-pants are still being lined up,but many of them arerepeaters and have been com-ing to the festival for years. They include floats, fraternal

and veterans organizationsand high school marchingbands from Ogdensburg Free

Academy and Heuvelton, Lis-bon, Morristown and Ed-wards-Knox central schools

Then there are the firedepartments. According to Mr.Cole, the firefighters who willmarch and be accompanied by

their vehicles will be fromOgdensburg, Edwards,DeKalb Junction, Lisbon,Canton, Heuvelton, Morris-

    town, Rensselaer Falls andelsewhere.

They come from all overthe county, Mr. Cole said.

Entertainment of a carnivalflavor will be provided alongthe parade route by jugglers,

stilt walkers and clowns. The marching bands will be

joined in providing music by,among others, two other

parade staples, the Penn-Dixie Band from Pennsylva-nia and the Hitmen fromRochester. Both are brassgroups.

The Hitmen are notable fortheir prison garb. The group

also knows that Ford Streetcan be a pretty unforgivingplace to be on a sunny, hotday.

But theyll be ready.Theyll adjust their outfits

    with the weather, Mr. Colesaid.

A notable absence from thisyears parade will be threebagpipe bands from Canada.

According to Mr. Cole, theyare committed that day toperform at a Scottish High-lands games event in Ontario.

By BENNY FAIRCHILDWhile the Seaway Festival

may be best known for itsparade, concerts and fire-works, younger members ofthe Ogdensburg communitymay very well tell you theirfavorite part of the festival isthe annual firefighter kidsgames.

    Each year the games, spon-

sored by the Ogdensburg Fire-fighters Association, drawupwards of 100 children tocompete in such classic gamesas the sack race, wheel barrelrace, sprints and a hula hoopcontest.

Each race features prizes forfirst through third place, although in the end everyoneends up with a winner, Every-

body usually ends up withsomething, said AssistantChief Ronald D. Bouchard, who coordinates the games.

Races are broken down intoage divisions for children asyoung as 2 to 3 and eventeenagers, ages 15 and up.

Mr. Bouchard, who has beena member of the departmentfor 22 years, said that the

games predate his member-ship in the department. Imnot sure how long theyve beengoing on, but Ive been in thedepartment for 22 years andthey were around before Iwas, he said.

One of the newer additionsto the event is a greased poleclimb, where youngsters cantake a stab at climbing a 20foot long greased pole thatsextended over the city docksout into the river. Should theysuccessfully navigate the pole, theyre awarded with a $5cash prize.

Mr. Bouchard noted that thegreased-pole climb is actually

a combined effort, between thedepartment and the Ogdens-burg Volunteer Rescue Squad, who have divers on hand forthe event, should someoneneed assistance getting backto dry land. The rescue squadhas always been good abouthelping us with the greasedpole and we appreciate that,he said.

The department is alsograteful to area businesseswho donate food and drinksfor the event, including BigCheese Pizza, The CornerDeli, Jrecks Subs, Pepsi-ColaOgdensburg Bottlers, PriceChopper, and Coca-Cola.

While the games are a lot ofhard work, Mr. Bouchard saidthat once they get started itdoesnt take long for them toremember why they put thegames on each year, Once weget going and the kids startscreaming and laughing, wecan see everyones having agreat time and we know itsworth it.

In addition to food andprizes, Mr. Bouchard said thatfree helium balloons will alsobe available for anyone whosinterested.

The games will be held July23 from 1 to 4 p.m. in theGreenbelt and as always, Mr.Bouchard said that every-thing is totally free. Thatsthe best part, he said.

    The Ogdensburg Interna-

tional Seaway Festival 4-MileMaple City Trail Run-Walkwill be held on Sunday July24 and will begin and end atthe Edwin Dobisky Commu-nity Center.

The starting time is 9 a.m.and will follow the Maple CityTrail. The entry fee is $10payable to the Seaway Festi-val 4 Miler, C/O John Tebo705 Picquet Drive Ogdens-burg, New York 13669.
