Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado

“It’s not the photographer who makes the picture, but the person being photographed.”

Born in Brazil on February 8th, 1944. Became interested in photography in 1970.

Biography

Attended the first part of secondary school in his hometown of Aimorés.

Moved to Vitoria to complete his secondary education in 1962.

Left for São Paulo where Sebastião received a Masters in economics.

Early Education

Sebastião traveled to Africa to document famine.

Moved to Paris to begin his life as a photographer in 1973.

Worked as freelancer. Joined Sygma photographic agency in 1974. Joined the Gamma photographic agency in

1975. Photographed Indians and peasants of Latin

America during 1977. Left Gamma and joined Magnum Photos in

1979. Salgado remained in Magnum Photos for the next 15 years.

Start of Career

Sebastião Salgado worked on an 18-month project documenting the African famine.

He published two books during this time, Sahel:Man in Distress and Sahel el fin del camino (the end of the road).

W. Eugene Smith Award in 1982. Oskar Barnack Award in 1985. Named Photographic journalist of the Year

in 1986. Hasselblad Award in 1989. Featured in People magazine in 1993.
