Invitation

Genetics has witnessed an era of innovations and discoveries during the last two decades,

which has created new tools offering immense opportunities to improve crops, livestock,

fishes and microbes, and to manage hitherto intractable plant, human and animal ailments.

The application of artificial intelligence to analyze the vast amount of genomics and

phenomics data that are being generated is providing rare insights into the genetic basis of

complex traits. The success of genetically improved organisms on enhancing farmers'

income and welfare has explicitly projected the impact of the science of Genetics. While

these successes are timely, they are still relevant to address the emerging challenges of

food, health and nutritional security in the wake of the burgeoning population projected to be

9. 7 billion by 2050. For sustaining and continuing the legacy of success, renewed emphasis

is needed in the science of Genetics and allied fields to utilize power of new technologies,

and also to address concerns about their inappropriate uses.

In view of the above, the Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding (ISGPB) is

organizing the 1at National Genetics Congress (NGC) with the theme "Genetics for

Sustainable Food, Health and Nutrition Security" from December 14-16, 2018 at New Delhi.

Through this event, the Society is attempting to bring together Indian geneticists working

with different organisms including miaobes, plants, animals, fishes and human beings on a

single platfonn to review the recent advances in various spheres of Genetics and create a

roadmap so that the it can be utilized tor addressing future challenges of the country.

Further, the Congress will provide an opportunity to young scientists, researchers, students

to participate and present their works and ideas. The implications of modem genetic

technologies to sharing and use of our genetic resources, genetic pronllng, data sharing etc.

will also be discussed, which can help in formulating guidelines for our national policies in

these areas. Through these interactions, we hope to chalk out a programme for judicious

application of modem and conventional genetic tools and technologies for accelerated

improvement of crops, animals and fishes, and for securing and sustaining the health of our

citizens.

The overall programme has been arranged in various sessions to cover diverse areas of

Genetics and provide ample scope for participation and deliberations by researchers

working in different spheres of the science of Genetics. The Organizing Committee of the

NGC cordially invite all researchers and scholars to participate in this Congress and

contribute in furthering the science of Genetics and help formulating policies and

programmes for the application of genetic technologies to ensure sustainable food

production and secure environmental and human health in India.
