STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

“The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.” (ACTS 13:52)

The disciples heard Our Lord’s call and were able to spread the Gospel message with strength and vital-ity. We, too, can experience that same joy if we make room for the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts. When we use our gifts in the way that God intends, He fills us with supernatural joy. A joy that others notice and are attracted to.

Jan Kotek Please pray for her and all the faithful departed

GFDT

Please become accustomed to seeing this abbreviation. By the time next Thanksgiving Day rolls around, those letters and what they stand for will be second nature to us all. Of course, in this age of speaking in letters rather than words, such a pattern should not prove too challenging. In fact, one can expand upon it by adding a few more letters to the alphabet soup "RMC.” Thus, the total acronym is RMCGFDT, which stands for RENEW MY CHURCH GROUPING FEEDBACK AND DISCERNMENT TEAM.

This is not the first time I am telling you about the way in which our parish, together with people of St. Tarcissus and St. Thecla, will tackle the ginormous task of coming up with a configuration of our communities in the RENEW MY CHURCH process. I have mentioned it in previous Bulletin articles, and made reference to it at some parish meetings. Today, however, I want to share with you some exciting news about the GFDT, namely, that St. Cornelius now has a GFDT in place, ready to embark upon the RMC journey together under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

About a month ago, I leaned that the parish team is to consist of five and only five members. I was somewhat surprised at this; I anticipated having a larger team with which to work, but such are the rules of the game. After some prayerful thought—quite a bit, actually—I reached out to these parishioners who accepted the invitation to help shape the future of our community. I am very happy to introduce them at this time.

Three of our GFDT currently serve on the Parish Pastoral Council. I concluded months ago that the PPC would be one of the groups heavily involved in RMC, and to this end I asked them to read a book about the RMC concept by Father James Mallon, "Divine Renovation." In addition, I extended an invitation to attend the Archdiocesan RMC Summit in Rosemont last October. All three of our PPC GFDT members read the book and attended the two-day summit. They are: Ron Polaniecki Cathy Minnick Al Trigo

According to RMC Guidelines, one of our team members must be a school parent or school board member. Since our parish school is Pope Francis Global Academy, I surveyed a list of our families who are connected with PFGA. There were many potential candidates, so the choice was not easy, but my choice, a parent with two children enrolled in the school, was: Carolina Cartagena

Finally, I wanted to have representation from my other advisory organization, the Parish Finance Committee, for finances are sure to play a part in whatever takes place in RMC. I chose a member who for months has expressed a willingness and a desire to work on RMC: Peter Cullen-Conway

Something you should know: I only sent out six invitations to find the five people to serve on the GFDT. That's pretty amazing, and speaks well for our parish's willingness to be proactive in the RMC process.

I'm not sure if St. Tarcissus and St. Thecla have set up their teams as yet; if not, I am confident that this will happen in the very near future. Thus, the RMC meetings will include fifteen parishioners (five from each), three pastors, and two principals (PFGA and St. Thecla School). All of us will work together to move our parishes forward in whatever direction the Lord would have us go. It all begins with a 90 minute session with Cardinal Cupich on June 1. Please keep all of us in prayer as we immerse ourselves in what promises to be a difficult but productive five months of labor in bringing these three parishes into the RMC reality. Fr. Dan (P.S.: See photo on page 7)

Renew My Church: It Starts with Us Consider these questions thoughtfully: Are you a disciple of Jesus Christ? What does it mean to be His disciple? Is there anything holding you back from following Him more closely? Or from introducing others to Him? What is your relationship with the parish com-munity? How do you strengthen the larger Catholic community? As Pope Francis said when he visited the United States: “One of the great challenges facing the Church in this generation is to foster in the faithful a sense of personal respon-sibility for the Church’s mission, and to enable them to fulfill that responsibility as mission-ary disciples, as a leaven of the Gospel in our world. This will require creativity in adapt-ing to changed situations, carrying forward the legacy of the past not primarily by main-taining our structures and institutions, which have served us well, but above all by being open to the possibilities which the Spirit opens up to us and communicating the joy of the Gospel, daily and in every season of our life.” With this in mind, it is important to prayerfully discern our own efforts to renew our faith lives and our active participation in the life of the Church. There are three mission imperatives that guide our efforts of Renew My Church: Make Disciples We must reflect on how each of us invites others into a personal encounter and lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ as disciples in His Church. Build Community Our parish and school communities today face a number of obstacles to vitality—the parishioner bases of many par-ishes are very small; the number of school-aged children in areas has decreased; we have fewer priests; many of our parishes are not sustainable to carry on the mission of the Church; and many parishes and schools have deferred maintenance for many years, resulting in unaffordable capital needs. We must ensure our communities have enough resources to carry out our mission. But we also recognize resourcing alone does not address all of our challenges. Parish and school communities that today are well-resourced and vi-brant still face significant challenges because of the changes in society. That is why we need a spiritual renewal at the foundation of all we do. Inspire Witness In keeping with the urging of the Second Vatican Council, Pope Francis is calling the Church to go out into the world as a field hospital to bring healing to a world torn by division, violence, racism, poverty and to promote respect for hu-man dignity and life. What does this have to do with your personal role in Renew My Church? Take that question to prayer and, just as He looked at Peter and asked him, “Do you love me?” … “Feed my sheep,” so, too, will He give you a clear role in the renewal of His Church. We encourage you to read a splendid article called “What is a missionary disciple in Renew My Church?” in the March 10 issue of Chicago Catholic at www.chicagocatholic.com

Grateful!!

A sincere thank you to all of our Ministers of Care to the Homebound who each week bring the Body of Christ to those who cannot make it to church to worship with us due to illness or disability. We have

9 terrific Ministers who perform this ministry. One of our Ministers of Care, Marilyn Webb, bakes cookies, buys treats and candies on Christmas and Easter which are included in the gift bags that are distributed. Each homebound person also receives a plant and our Religious Education students make greeting cards as part of their gift. It’s a wonderful way to keep our shut-ins connected to the parish they love so much. Please keep our shut-ins and their Ministers of Care in your prayers. Peace, Barb Hecker

RENEW MY CHURCH PRAYER

Lord Jesus, your speak to us today as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time You call to us and say:

Renew my Church!

Pour out your gift of the Holy Spirit upon us, and en-able us: to hear you clearly, to listen to each other attentively, to stay together in charity, to surrender our own plans readily, to embrace the greater good, to hand on your gifts to future generations. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example & presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever.

AMEN.

EVERY 40 SECONDS, SOMEONE IN THE U.S. IS HAVING A STROKE!

Stroke Scan Plus will be at St. Cornelius Catholic Church on Friday, June 7th to provide life-saving, wellness ultrasound screenings. It is important to perform preventive maintenance for ourselves yearly. Do you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease, stroke, abdominal aneurysm or internal cancers? If so, do not miss this opportunity for early detection of a possibly serious disease. These screenings are typically NOT performed at your an-nual check-up, and insurance companies may not pay for them unless you are symptomatic. Diagnos-tic versions of these screenings cost thousands of dollars in a hospital. Stroke Scan Plus will be of-fering them to you for $159 for all 7 combined ultra-sound screenings (Stroke, AAA, AFIB & or-gans). Insurance is NOT necessary and appoint-ments are limited. Stroke Scan will be available at the church for you to register on May 18 & 19, or please call 832-437-7355 or toll free 1-866-935-7226 to schedule an appointment today for you or a loved one. The screenings will take place in the Parish Hall - Lower level of the church. Preven-tion is your key to quality health! www.strokescan.com.
