Assessment• Students will be assessed on a piece of
writing from writer’s workshop.
• Teachers will not be conferring with students during this assessment.
• Students will be able to choose their own topic and use aids such as personal dictionaries.

•Comprehension- The ability to understand and get meaning from spoken and written language. In second grade we will shift students’ focus from learning to read to reading to learn.

Spelling- Words Their Way• Homework- Practice your sort, emphasis is on
the pattern of words and not memorizing.
• 15-20 words to sort each day at school, and
practice nightly. (3 challenge words)
• 5 spelling words are sight words. They are
words they should recognize by sight and do not
necessarily follow a pattern. NC DPI indicates
second graders should read and spell these
words by the end of second grade.
Reading Assessment-
TRC• An assessment tool used to determine current reading level.
• Children read an unfamiliar selection aloud to the teacher.
• Students must read selected level between 90%-94% correct. Above 94%-too easy, below 90% too difficult
• Beginning of Year: Level: J
• 2nd Quarter: Level K
• 3rd Quarter: Level L
• 4th Quarter: Level M
How does writing fit in TRC?
-Levels F and higher, students are
asked 2 text dependent questions
-Students are encouraged to use the
text to answer questions
-Students must answer the question
correctly using details from the text

• Read every night!
• Practice responding to reading using
text dependent questions
• Practice math facts
• Complete all nightly homework
• Reinforce positive behavior choices at
school
