Reading Goal:
This week we will read fiction stories about
elephants and research elephants to learn more about them. Let’s start with this fiction story titled: The Day of the Elephant. (7 min.)
As you read, think about our plot chart and answer/discuss the 4 square questions.
Today we will research elephants. Start by making a KWL chart. List what you know about elephants and think of 3-4 questions you want to learn about elephants. Watch this informational piece and complete the learn section of your KWL. ( 6 min.)
Discuss: How did the
author of The Day of the
Elephant use facts about
elephants as she wrote
about the elephant
character Mae Jabu?
Writing: Choose one or
both prompts to respond
to on paper. Be sure to
use capital letters and end
punctuation as you write
in complete sentences.
1. Write your own fiction
story with an elephant as
one of the characters. Use
the plot chart to help you
write all the parts of a
fiction story. Add a
drawing of your story that
shows the setting. You
can use this graphic
1. Video your writing
prompt and have your
parents post it to our
class Facebook page.
2.Log into RAZ kids and
read the assigned book
about elephants and
add to the L section of
your KWL
3.Watch this reading
of Elmer by its author
David McKee
Phonics review: Go back through the story and research or look for multi syllable words. For example research: re/search is two syllables and means to search again. Because /re/ means again, /search/ means to look closely. So you will research multi syllable words. Notice when you clap them out that most have a prefix or suffix?? How many prefixes and suffixes can you find?
Discussion Questions: What characteristics do elephants have in common with people? (Examples: left or right hand dominant, baby teeth/tusk, need sunscreen)
organizer if you wish, to
help move your story
along:
2. Write a nonfiction
paragraph sharing what
you have learned about
elephants. Be sure to
write a main idea
sentence and have
each detail support or
tell about elephants.
Add a drawing of an
elephant in its natural
habitat.
What
is the most important
thing Elmer and the
other elephants
learned in this story?
4. Create your own
drawing of Elmer with
this Directed Drawing
You can also create
your own elephant
pattern!
Math
Goal: Identify equal and unequal parts of a whole. Click on the image to view a video about equal and unequal parts:
Click the IXL link below to complete questions about equal and unequal parts.
Find things you eat on a daily basis that you could partition into equal parts. Try and have your parents help you partition (or divide) a food into equal parts. (examples: pizza, apples, oranges, candy bar, etc.) Skills to Review: Addition with regrouping
Goal: Identify halves and fourths of a whole.
Click on the image to view a video about halves and fourths.
Your child may complete up
to 10 questions about fourths.
“Fraction
Pizza” Trace a circle from an item in your house (bottom
of a coffee can, a clock, or a soup can, etc) onto paper to make an even circle. Cut into fourths. Then create a fraction pizza with any toppings you want. Label the fraction of the pizza for each topping. (two-fourths is pepperoni, three-fourths is hamburger) Skills to Review: Subtraction practice
Goal: Identify fractions beyond one whole. Click on the image to view a video about fractions beyond a whole.
Use food that you
have around your house (pop tarts, apples, oranges, cereal bar, pizza, etc.) or draw two equal rectangles/circles. Divide them into four equal parts and practice shading or eating more than one whole. Write the fraction. (ex. one and one fourth) Skills to Review: Fraction Review

Goal: Classify matter by physical properties.
Physical Property: something about an object that can be seen, heard, tasted, smelled, or felt.
Goal: Use physical properties to choose different materials to construct with.
1. Combine different materials to build a very tall tower.
Goal: Use physical properties to choose different materials to construct with. 1. Combine different
materials to build a bridge.
Bonus:
Science Goal:
Click on the image to watch a video about physical properties
Make a chart of items with these physical properties.
Find 3 items for each:
● flexible (bendable) ● stiff ● longer than your arm ● shorter than thumb ● smooth ● rough ● solid ● liquid ● cool ● hot
Talk about why it is important that items have different physical properties.
For example, worms are flexible, and this helps it move in the soil easier.
Hammers are solid and stiff so that you can easily hit and push nails into wood.
2. Explain to your parents why you choose those materials using your knowledge of physical properties.
3. Now have someone blow on your tower to see if it will stay standing.
Click on image to watch a video about how towers are built.
Feel free to post a photo/video of your tower on Central’s Facebook page.
2. Explain to your parents why you choose those materials using your knowledge of physical properties.
3. Now try rolling a car or small ball across your bridge to see if it will hold.
Click on image to watch a video about what makes bridges so strong.
Feel free to post a photo/video of your bridge on Central’s Facebook page.
