Second Sunday of Advent (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

On behalf of all of us at St. Hugh, a very warm welcome to all who visit us today. The Lord called you by name at Baptism to be his beloved children, and he continues to call you throughout your life so that you may one day join him in heaven. We are happy that you are here. May you experience through us the love of God.

The gospel presents us today with the figure of John the Baptist. He too was called by name to be the herald of the Messiah, to proclaim him near and to point him out to the world.

We pray that your visit with us will bring you joy, that you will hear the Lord lovingly calling your name, and that you will join us in proclaiming Christ to the world. God bless you.

Fr. Luis

P. Luis

ONE OF THE BELOVED FEASTS OF MARY observed in the Liturgical Calendar comes during Advent. It is the feast of the Immaculate Conception, the teaching that Mary was preserved from any stain of original sin from the very moment of her conception by virtue of the merits of her Son Jesus Christ.

The doctrine developed in part from the angel Gabriel’s greeting to Mary at the Annunciation. It was fitting that the Mother of Christ should be filled with the grace her Son won for us on the cross. This ancient belief was held by many of the early Church Fathers, who called her “All Holy”, “All Sinless” and “Immaculate”. With the passing of time, the Eastern Church, to show its love for the Immaculate Conception, established a feast day to commemorate it sometime around the end of the 7th century. The Western Church followed suit, and by the high Middle Ages the celebration of the Immaculate Conception was widespread throughout Europe. The doctrine was recognized and defended universally as true Christian doctrine by the end of the 15th century.

Around the middle of the 19th century, Blessed Pope Pius IX, after consulting theologians and bishops all over the world, officially defined the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception in the Apostolic Constitution Ineffabilis Deus, of December 8, 1854. In it he declared that the Blessed Virgin Mary "in the first instance of her conception, by a singular privilege and grace granted by God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved exempt from all stain of original sin."

Under this title of the Immaculate Conception, the bishops of the United States proclaimed our Blessed Mother patroness of our country in 1847. Let us pray to Mary Immaculate to watch over us and to lead us ever closer to her Son Jesus.

BLESSED GIOVANNI SCHIAVO (1903-1967) — Italian priest and a professed member from the Congregation of Saint Joseph, to which he was admitted in 1917. He was ordained a priest in1927 and served until 1931 as a pastor in Italian cities such as Modena and Oderzo. In 1931 his superiors allowed him to go to Brazil to become part of the missions there. Fr. Schiavo would never return to his native land.

He began his mission as a school director at Galópolis until 1936. It was in Brazil that he served as the provincial superior for his order from 1947 until his resignation in February 1956; he also served as the master of novices and as a teacher for a brief period. Fr. Schiavo was a formidable pastor, sought by priests and religious communities alike for spiritual guidance. In 1957 he founded the School Sisters of Saint Maria Goretti.

Hospitalized with serious complications from hepatitis, he was diagnosed with liver cancer and died in January, 1967. In the hours before his death he continued to repeat: "My Jesus – mercy!" and his final words were: "Father, I am Your son; I always wanted to do Your will". He was beatified in 2017.

The Pope Speaks / Habla el Papa

Angelus, December 6, 2015

On this second Sunday of Advent, the Liturgy places us in the school of John the Baptist, who preached “a baptism of repentance for the

forgiveness of sins” (Lk 3: 3)…. The voice of the Baptist still cries in the deserts of humanity today, which are — what are today’s deserts? — closed minds and hardened hearts. And [his voice] causes us to ask

ourselves if we are actually following the right path, living a life according to the Gospel. Today, as then, he admonishes us with the words of the Prophet Isaiah: “Prepare the way of the Lord!” (v. 4)…. Therefore, each one of us is called to make Jesus known to those who do not yet know

him. But this is not to proselytize. No, it is to open a door. “Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!” (1 Cor 9:16), St Paul declared. If Our Lord Jesus has changed our

lives, and he changes it every time we go to him, how can we not feel the passion to make him known to those we encounter at work, at school, in our apartment building, in the

hospital, in meeting places?....May the Virgin Mary, who is Mother and knows how to do so, help us to tear down the walls and the obstacles that impede our conversion, that is, our

journey toward the encounter with the Lord. He alone, Jesus alone can fulfil all the hopes of man!
