John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: A voice of one crying out in the desert, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from
the coming wrath? Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones. Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
Most Scripture scholars believe that the infancy narratives of Matthew’s Gospel ( Chapter 1 and 2) were written down after the rest of the Gospel. In that case, the verses that we read today would have been the Same words as Jesus’ preaching in 4:17: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Both men demanded a beginning of the story of Jesus, just as it is in the Gospel of Mark. The main character in this passage is John the Baptist, the last of the great Jewish prophets. The prophets of Israel were seldom accepted by priests and kings, because of their faithfulness to God that transcended their obedience to religious and political authorities. John the Baptist appears as one of them preaching outside the official world of his time. As with the prophets of Israel, the messenger was not as important as the content of the message; his preaching was summarized in the radical conversion of the total person to God as preparation for the new age when the God of Israel would be recognized as the Lord by all creation.

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception celebrates the saving work of God in preserving the Blessed Virgin Mary from the stain of original sin. Because of His foreknowledge that Mary would consent to bear Christ, God kept Mary free from original sin from the moment of her conception in the womb of her mother, Saint Anne. When is it celebrated? The Immaculate Conception would normally fall on Sunday, December 8, 2013. However, since that is the Second Sunday in Advent 2013, the celebration of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is transferred to the next day, Monday, December 9, 2013.
Since the normal date of the feast falls on Sunday, the celebration has been transferred to Monday, but the obligation does not transfer. Thus, in 2013, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is not a Holy Day of Obligation.
La “Inmaculada Concepción de la Virgen María” se celebra el 8 de Diciembre de cada año. En este día se conmemora que la Virgen María, madre de Jesús, no fue alcanzada por el pecado original sino que, desde el primer instante de su concepción estuvo libre de todo pecado. La Inmaculada Concepción de la Santísima Virgen María es la patrona de España, Nicaragua y Estados Unidos. Según el dogma católico romano a María se le concede un privilegio divino,
desde el momento de su nacimiento es preservada de toda mancha del pecado original. El 8 de Diciembre de 1854, el papa Pío IX lo define como dogma de fe para la iglesia universal. Como el día de esta celebración cae en Domingo la fiesta fue trasferida al Lunes 9 de Diciembre, pero este año la fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción no es día de precepto.

The Religious Education Program invites you to be a part of the Angel Tree project.
The Angel Tree is designed to assist families in financial need to ensure that their children have a joyful Christmas. Each year, with your generosity, we help provide over 100 children with Christmas presents. The Angel Tree will be in front of the
crying room inside of the church. If you would like to help simply take a candy cane and bring a gift card to us by
December 14th.
The distribution date will be Monday December 16th and Tuesday December 17th from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from
3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

God Speaks Today/ Dios Habla Hoy
Evangelio de la Semana Mateo 3:01-12
Muchos expertos bíblicos aseguran que la narrativa de la infancia de Jesús que aparece en el Evangelio de San Mateo (capítulos 1 y 2) fue añadida al terminar el Evangelio. En ese caso, los versículos que leemos hoy serían el comienzo de la historia de Jesús tal y como la presenta el Evangelio de San Marcos. El personaje principal es Juan Bautista, el más grande de los profetas judíos. Los profetas de Israel no fueron aceptados por los reyes y los líderes religiosos porque sus mensajes desafiaban la corrupción de la autoridad política y religiosa. Juan es parte de esta tradición predicando al margen del mundo oficial de su tiempo. Al igual que en el movimiento profético de Israel, la persona del profeta no era tan importante como su mensaje. El mensaje de Juan es el mismo de Jesús en 4:17: “Cambien su vida y su corazon , porque el Reino de los Cielos se ha acercado.” Ambos exigieron una conversión radical de la persona a Dios en preparación a la nueva era en que el Dios de Israel será reconocido como Señor de toda la creación.
En ese tiempo se presento Juan Bautista en el decierto de Judea predicando de esta forma: “Cambien su vida y su corazon, porque esta cerca el Reino de los Cielos.” De el hablaba el profeta Isaias al decir: “Una voz grita en el desierto: preparen el camino del Señor, enderecen sus senderos.” Juan vestia un manto de pelo de camello, con un cinturón de cuero, y se alimentaba con langostas y miel de abeja silvestre. Entonces iban a verlo los judíos de Jerusalén, de Judea y de toda la región del Jordán. Confesaban sus pecados y Juan los bautizaba en el río
Jordán. Al ver que muchos fariseos y saduceos venian a bautizarse, les dijo: “Raza de viboras, ¿acaso podran escapar al castigo que se les viene encima? Muestren, pues, los frutos de una sincera conversión, en vez de confiarse en que son los hijos de Abraham. Yo les aseguro que Dios es capaz de sacar hijos de Abraham aun de estas piedras. Fíjense que el hacha llega a la raíz. Y están cortando a todo árbol que no da buen fruto y lo arrojan al fuego. Mi bautismo es bautismo de agua y significa un cambio de vida. Pero otro viene después de mí, y más poderoso que yo y yo ni siquiera soy digno de llevarle los zapatos. El los bautizará en el fuego y en el soplo del Espíritu Santo. El tiene en sus manos el harnero y limpiará su trigo, que guardará en sus bodegas, quemando la paja en un fuego que no se apaga.”
