In the Mercy of God

There is nothing more drama c than Jesus appear-ing to His disciples a er He rose from the dead. Imagine how the disciples felt a er they le Jesus all alone when He needed them most. Recall the story of the Gospel when the disciples ran away a er Jesus was arrested. They hid in fear for their lives. Only two dared to go and was present when Jesus was brought to the High Priest. But one remained with those who were warming them-selves near the fire pit while the other went inside the hall where they tried Jesus and condemned Him to die. Three

mes Peter, the one who remained outside, denied being with Jesus. When the cock crowed, Peter recalled the words of Jesus and wept bi erly. Losing Jesus was painful. But it was more painful for them to realize how they be-trayed Jesus and denied Him.

The gesture of Jesus toward His disciples was filled with so much love and mercy. He extended to them the gi of forgiveness when He said: “Peace be with you.” Jesus did not only forgive them but also He renewed His trust and confidence in them when He said: “As the Fa-ther has sent me so I send you.” Jesus s ll entrusted the mission to those who failed to be faithful, who aban-doned Him, who doubted him, and who have denied Him. He restored His disciples into His friendship.

This experience of the disciples for fied them in their love for Jesus and their willingness to be worthy of this opportunity that Jesus had given them. From the Acts of the Apostles to the Epistle of Peter, we heard of the transforma on in which this experience led them to do. They formed communi es united in prayer and in the cel-ebra on of the Eucharist. And these communi es mani-fested their love for Jesus and each other in concrete acts of generosity – they shared their blessings to those who have less. They filled up what was lacking in the life of others. They for fied and strengthened one another by encouraging words and by inspiring examples especially in moments of trials and difficul es.

Today we, as a community of faith, we are called to recognize the richness of the mercy of God towards us. And as we deepen our understanding of God’s generous love towards us, may we express this in the way we re-spond to the needs of our brothers and sisters whether in the area of interpersonal rela onship, of physical or mate-rial reali es, or of spiritual needs. Let the goodness of God flow through you and me and make this world a be er place to live in.
