NEWCOMERS AND VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME
Sunday Worship Schedule: Matins 9:00 am & Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m.
To Our Visitors and Guests
We welcome you to worship with us today, whether you are an Orthodox Christian or this is your first visit to an
Orthodox Church, we are pleased to have you with us. Although Holy Communion and other Sacraments are offered
only to baptized and chrismated (confirmed) Orthodox Christians in good standing with the Church, all are invited to
receive the Antidoron (blessed bread) from the priest at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. The Antidoron is not a
sacrament, but it is reminiscent of the agape feast that followed worship in the ancient Christian Church. After the
Divine Liturgy this morning please join us in the Church Hall for fellowship and refreshments. Please complete a
Visitor’s Card before you leave today and drop it in the offering tray, or give it to one of the parishioners after the
service, or mail it to the Church Office.

The Sunday Epistle Reading
O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.
Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.
The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15
Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has
shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the
face of Christ.
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent
power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not
crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken;
struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life
of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up
to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death
is at work in us, but life in you.
Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too
believe, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with
Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends
to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

The Sunday Gospel Reading
The Gospel According to Luke 6:31-36
The Lord said, "As you wish that men would do to you, do so
to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to
you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you
do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to
you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those
from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners
lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do
good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great,
and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and
the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful."
αὐτοῖς ὁμοίως. καὶ εἰ ἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας ὑμᾶς, ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστί;

Philoptochos General Meeting Today after Church
Dear Parishioners.
Last summer the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America approved new Policies for the Safety of
Youth and Children. St. Barbara must comply with these new policies by September 1, 2019 or we
will no longer be allowed to have any youth ministry programs or events.
Compliance is a fairly simple process. First, all youth works must complete a registration form (and
re-register each year). Second, all youth workers must complete online training each year. This
training course will be provided by the Archdiocese and will be released soon. Finally, all youth
workers must complete a background check every two years. The background check will be
performed by the Archdiocese safety vendor, Praesidium.
Youth Workers include anyone working in a youth ministry program or event such as Sunday school,
Greek school, HOPE/JOY, youth choir and Greek dance. Parents supervising their own children in
the Preschool Sunday school class are not considered youth workers.
Although the training isn't available, I would like to go ahead and start collecting registration forms
from our youth workers. If you are a youth worker or are interested in becoming a youth worker,
please contact me for the registration form.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions concerning the policies, compliance or
whether you are considered a youth worker. I am also including this blog post from GOARCH which
has more information about the policies and compliance.

Parish Financial Summary
Note: The Operations Fund income above is the total of Sunday offering and Stewardship; it excludes the Greek Festival.
The Operations Fund pays all Church expenses except for the mortgage payment. The Mortgage Fund includes all
Mortgage Fund donations and fundraisers (e.g., Taste of Greece, Gyro Feast). The Mortgage Fund pays our mortgage
which is $12,713.36/month.
DID YOU KNOW?
“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth
a cheerful giver.” - 2 CORINTHIANS 9:7
At the end of August, total stewardship giving was $114,875. This represents 65.3% of our budget of $176,000.
Since through August represents 66.7% of the year, we are nearly on track to meet our stewardship goal for the
first time in years.
Non-stewardship offerings are $20,206, 72% of our goal of $28,000.
Thank you for your continued generosity to your Church. Please continue so that we can meet our goal by the end
of year and say as St. Paul did “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Stewards as of September 2, 2019
Our 2019 stewardship campaign is going quite well. We have 142 Stewards as of September 2, 2019, almost 90% of our goal of 160 for the year. Thank you. Please help us meet our goal very soon by pledging your support, don’t wait until year end, our expenses don’t stop. Your time, talents and treasury are critical to the success of our Ministries.
Also please give prayerful consideration to the amount of your 2019 contribution so that we can meet our budget and cover unforeseen expenses. We are currently below what we need to fund our expenses. Stewardship is the primary source of the funding for our Ministries and operating obligations.

Dear Parishioners, In the early part of 2020, St. Barbara's Ahepans and Philoptochos members will be jointly hosting a blood drive. We would like to know if you will 1) donate blood (all types are needed) and / or 2) assist with the coordination of the blood drive. Please email Andrew Christakos ([email protected]) with your desire to participate. We would like to have as many members as possible come out and support this worthy cause. Details, including date and time, will be forthcoming. Thank you.

Cyriacus the Hermit of Palestine
Reading This Saint was born in Corinth in 448. He went to Palestine to the
Lavra of Euthymius the Great, but because of his youth was sent by
Saint Euthymius to Saint Gerasimus; after the death of Saint
Gerasimus he returned to the Lavra of Saint Euthymius. Later he
took on a more rigorous life of asceticism in the wilderness of
Natoufa, where there was nothing to eat except the exceedingly
bitter wild herb called squills, which, however, through his prayers,
God made sweet for him and his disciple. He lived 107 years and
reposed in the year 555.
Apolytikion of Cyriacus the Anchorite
First Tone
Thou didst prove to be a citizen of the desert, an angel in the flesh, and a wonderworker, O
Cyriacus, our God-bearing Father. By fasting, vigil, and prayer thou didst obtain heavenly gifts,
and thou healest the sick and the souls of them that have recourse to thee with faith. Glory to
Him that hath given thee strength. Glory to Him that hath crowned thee. Glory to Him that
worketh healings for all through thee.
Kontakion of Cyriacus the Anchorite
Plagal of the Fourth Tone
The sacred lavra doth at all times rightly honour thee as a sure helper and support and mighty
champion, and it annually observeth thy holy mem'ry. And since thou, O righteous Cyriacus,
dost possess boldness with the Lord, protect us from our enemies, that we may cry to thee:
Rejoice, O thrice-blessed Father.
