Question of the Week:

Fr. Gerard’s Corner This Gospel passage ends with John’s observation that “(the) disciples began to believe in him” (John 2:11). But one person in this scene believed in him already—his mother. Realizing that the wine ran short, she told her Son. Despite his rebuke, she alerted the servers. This event is not only a sign of the power Jesus had, but also of the behavior of the human family. Ideally, a mother believes in her children and in their ability to do more than they may appear willing or able to do. A child obeys as best she or he is able. The Holy Family provides a model for us.

Last week we heard Luke’s account of the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus at his baptism. Today we hear Saint Paul telling the Corinthians that the Holy Spirit was behind all of these new phenomena of the early church. God is behind all the newness described in today’s readings: the new names given Jerusalem, the new wine at Cana, the new spiritual gifts in Corinth. No “same old, same old;” God makes all things new.

Tomorrow we celebrate Martin Luther King Day. During Dr. King’s life, many people felt uncomfortable or even angry about what he preached. Perhaps some in Corinth felt the same way. The movement of the Holy Spirit can challenge people who are set in their ways, thinking they have all the answers. The movement of the Holy Spirit can upset people who feel threatened by radical transformation. But isn’t the gift of salvation a radical transformation of humanity? God exalts the forsaken, marries humanity, and fills our lives to the brim with good wine. The Spirit flows within us. Fr. Gerard

Returning Catholics

Returning Catholics series will begin on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 7 p.m. in the church social room. For information, contact Carol (858-354-7085) or just come to the first meeting.

The 8-week Returning Catholics Program is designed to assist those who wish to consider returning to the Church. The program includes updating in the beliefs and practices of the

Catholic Church, and provides a community for those returning. The program ends with an opportunity to experience the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the context of a relaxed scripture-based Morning of Prayer.

Stewardship in the New Year Stewardship is a commitment of mind and heart to the Lord; a way of life that needs constant renewal and transformation. This time of year has always been one of looking forward to a new year, reflecting on the changes we need to make in our lives and resolving to follow through on those changes.

Stewardship of Prayer: Resolve to strengthen your relationship with the Lord through prayer. Notice how often you pray and what hinders you from praying. If you are a beginner, commit to short, daily prayer times.

Each World Youth Day has its own special prayer that is shared by pilgrims around the world before, during, and after the event itself.

WYD Panamá Pilgrim Prayer

Merciful Father, You call us to live our lives as a way of salvation. Help us to recall the past with gratitude, to embrace the present with courage and to build the future with hope. Lord Jesus, our friend and brother, thank you for looking upon us with love. Let us listen to your voice as it resonates in the hearts of each one with the strength and light of the Holy Spirit. Grant us the grace of being a Church that goes forth with vi-brant faith and a youthful face to communicate the joy of the Gospel. May we help to build up the kind of

society we long for, one where there is fairness and fellowship.

We pray for the Pope and bishops; for priests and deacons; for those in consecrated life and for volunteers; for young people and all who will participate in the upcoming World Youth Day in Panamá, and for those

who are preparing to receive them. Our Lady of Antigua, Patroness of Panama, help us to pray and live with generosity like yours:

“I am the servant of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38).

Please pray for our 8 youth and the adult chaperones who will be attending World Youth Day 2019 in Panama! The will be leaving this Sunday and returning Monday, January 28th.

WYD Icon: The cross does not journey alone, however. In our time it will always be accompanied by an icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary (as Christ Himself was accompanied by his mother in history.) On Palm Sunday in Rome, 2003, a delegation of Canadian youth passed on the cross to that of Germany.

On the same occasion, Pope John Paul II entrusted to the youth an icon of the Blessed Mother that would accompany the cross. “It will be a sign of Mary’s motherly presence close to young people who are called, like the Apostle John, to welcome her into their lives,” said the pontiff.

WYD Cross: The World Youth Day cross has many names: Jubilee Cross, Pilgrim Cross, and Youth Cross. It was entrusted to the youth as they were given the commission to “carry it throughout the world as a symbol of Christ’s love for humanity, and announce to everyone that only in the death and resurrection of Christ can we find salvation and redemption.” The cross set out with the young people from St. Peter’s in 1984 and has since been carried around the world, making a pilgrimage from parish to parish, diocese to diocese, and country to country.

Impact: So the cross and icon are carried together through the world touching hearts and inspiring holiness.

Amen.

P.Gerard J.S.Paluch

¿En qué forma soy desafiado a vivir diferentemente? ¿Puedo reconocer al Espíritu Santo cuando se me desafía a cambiar?

Mission Statement: To love God, proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, and serve all God's people.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as

well as formation to ministry in the training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org
